Just to remind all, skiing is serious business. Here's a few from the weekend. Took a long walk in a place that time forgot to drive the big bus down the neon avenue

I'm with the Cock, she already paid for a lapse in judgement with her life, no need to rub salt in the wounds of any family members that might read this. I hardly think she was the victim of a once a year trip to the Whites, with a background like hers I am sure that she was extremely confident in herself, her expensive gear, and mostly a desire to challenge herself in all activities. It's not like her brain was firing on 3 cylinders. Everyone has a different take on what kind of risk is worth it to them. Saying she fucked up takes about as much courage as saying the sun will come out tomorrow, somewhere. And despite the whole thing being entirely tragic, it is not the first fatality on Mount Washington and it will certainly not be the last. There is some good though that could come out of this as it hopefully opens up peoples eyes a bit more to truly respect the mountains and mother nature.
It's ok to feel: "It was too dangerous for me to do, but I can almost understand someone else wanting to push their limits".
That's how I feel about lots of things, like mountain biking most the time, base jumping, skiing at the snow bowl, and so on.
There, I said something about this because.
Also, I spent a good portion of my day skiing on Sunday with a guy named Ken from near Albany. He has grandkids that he skis with, used to poach the slides back in the day, and still loved to shred the woods and search for fresh. Honestly, that's my goal. I want to be in my 80s and still rocking the pomas at Hickory bell to bell.

On a more sobering note, but with a happy ending: Cambridge Avalanche Buries Five People
I saw some ice fall off and it almost took out two toddlers on the sidewalk yesterday. Weird as it sounds, be careful in the city.Quote:
"I thought I was going to die -- literally. I was scared," said Michaella Costa, 20, who was trapped by the snow.
The man was partially dug out by his brother and a rink employee before firefighters arrived to free him, according to employee Robert Biasella.
A 33-year-old year man and Costa, both from Cambridge, were taken to the hospital complaining of neck injuries.
"I moved my head so I could scream for help, and then there were other people. There was like two other guys that were screaming for help, too," Costa said.
Police spokesman Jeremy Warnick said the five were walking on a path between the Simoni Ice Skating Arena in Cambridge and sports playing fields when they had the "unfortunate luck" of being in the spot where the snow fell off the roof at about 6:30 p.m.
"I don't think they had any warning. This came right down on them -- literally," Deputy Supt. Jack Albert said.
Biasella said a woman came in "frantically asking for help," and he and his supervisor ran outside. Biasella said he saw a young woman crying, as she was being helped out of the snow, and saw a man in the snow.
"We took shovels and were digging frantically," he said.
He said that he helped free a man who was waist-high in snow and that man used a shovel to find his brother, who was buried. Biasella said they managed to clear the snow around him and rescuers then arrived....

While there is clearly an inverse relationship between VO Max and rhythm, I'm glad to see the US Nordic Ski team getting a chance to blow off steam before the World Championships.

I'm not judging and this type of discussion is how people learn. I don't know who else read(s) 'accidents in NA mountaineering' as well as the whitewater reports, but I used to before this internet thing and when I pushed my limits. So taking sides and making this personal is silly. It happened and it's extremely sad, but hopefully something positive will come from it.
With all that said, I think it was suicide. She was obviously intelligent and somewhat skilled in mountaineering, so nothing adds up except a suicide...well thought out to make it look like a bad decision which relieves some pain of those left behind.
It just keeps snowing :D

ill climb with you, but you got to come to Smuggs...
Sealed indictments, tax problems, change in medication, cheating spouse, horrible diagnosis...the list is just about endless. The thing looked fishy to me on first impression.
Also a longterm reader of AINAM. No matter how it turns out when all the facts are known, it will remain a real head shaker.
The Presis are a favorite place for many of us and we seem to be sharing the love with folks we figure are ready for it. Let's keep up the good work. Going EYT in the Western Whites this w/e, but based on LFTGLY's report on yesterday, "the westside" is coming along nicely.

Very likely skiing tomorrow, much excite.
^That's some serious tonnage hanging over!
Suicide was my first thought, but didn't want to "cloud" the waters. I figured cancer, but life can be rough, too.
And everyone's initial response of shock and questioning her judgement is pretty normal. Shit, we were near there skiing Sunday and it was blowing us uphill. Can't imagine how intense that ridge was.
It's certainly not a decision I would have made. But I don't think there are many lessons here for anyone but a total newbie. She went into the teeth of the storm and paid the ultimate price. If any of the responders want to come out and criticize, admonish, or shake their fist at her, they have every right.
Yo! props TC & MTLripper! TGR IG showing some EC mag love. #instafame
