Once upon a time, skiing was not for everyone. Then came lifts, still too hard. Grooming. Still too hard. Widen the trails? Still too hard. Ahhh, lock the heel down....now anyone can ski...Can't imagine Alpine skiing for so many years, particularly at the resort in New England and not being bored to death...to each, their own. Who cares if you suck or not....progression if the fun part.
No he just had never skied before and was a self taught 3 pin/tele guy to start so he could get around, then switched to AT gear when he figured he needed to learn how to down hill ski first and keep up. Now he vacillates between the two.
I admire a good tele skier actually making tele turns, I wish I was good at it.

I kinda laugh at telemarkers who tele every turn. It's such a waste of energy. Mobility is the real advantage I see. Being perfectly balanced without the heel locked down and blasting alpine turns, intermixed with telemark to absorb big undulations or to deal with variable snow conditions. Most good alpiners could alpine just fine on tele gear, just need to be more aware of fore-aft balance and transition seamlessly between the two when needed. Light gear is where the telemark turn really becomes the go to technique I think. Doubt the dude being chased by the buffalo in the cave painting has his heels tied down....everyone who tried that got trampled...the Darwinism of snow travel via 10,000 bc. Course, at the end of the day....we're skiing. At least we ain't on a fat bike. That's a win.
Did someone say "Apres Ski?!"

Go figure all this tele talk.
First time at MRG yesterday with the uvm oc. Got rentals, hour lesson, and day pass for $40.. hard to beat. Different but a lot of fun. Would like to head back there on alpine gear.
Funny, I'm having a strange craving for Carlo Rossi....
We hit a nelsap yesterday. Was not warm. We yo-yo'd the shit out of one area near the top and it was good fun.

End of the day we grabbed pow surfers for some laps. My first snowboard was a used Elite 150 with these heinous graphics. This is not my board as it was stolen a long time ago, although I suppose it could be...never know. My friend recently scored it and threw some surf traction pads. Good fun.

I get sore knees just thinking about tele turns... in fact, I'm still sore from alpine yesterday (but happy)
