If you are stupid enough to pay those walk-up window prices, then VR is smart enough to take it.

THAT'S STILL OVER $200/DAY.
I'm one of the dipshits who chose to dance with the devil this year, buy the Epic pass, made non refundable reservations over MLK weekend in Park City, it'll be cool in a flat kind of groomer way I told the wife and daughter. Haven't skied PC since early 2000's, and then it was for one day with an internet friend who had a comp ticket for me. My girl needs to get back to school, that airport is so close, and so my choices are limited. Don't worry, after I drop the family off at the airport I get to go ski at CB, another Vail resort which may or may not be operational (they have my money).
Looking forward to it either way. PC is a cool town. I fully support this strike. I have more fun skiing 450 vert every single weekend than most people ever have skiing. I'll pocket my beers and sandwiches in as always, and life will be good.
What is obvious is that this is incredibly bad for Park City (Vail) public relations. When you sell someone a $300 lift ticket, they order a couple beers and a sprite with a cookie and it is over $50, then they find out the resort is only 19% open because the bean counters in Denver don't want to pay trollers $2 an hour more than a McDonalds worker, they are bound to scratch their heads.
Vail doesn't care though. Because suckers like me and most of you don't have a choice but to buy into the duopoly if we want to ski the biggest resorts in the country. The common wannabee wealthy folk that pay the $300 window rate, they'll rant and rave and swear Park City off forever and go to Vail next year. What other choice do they have? Oh yeah, Alterra. Another devil dance. Either way Vail is willing to shrug off the PR nightmare to put the fear of god into anyone thinking of organizing for fare wages in an increasingly untenable work/life mountain environment.
Vail knows we the people have handed even more power to the oligarchs in a couple weeks. Why should they fold? I mean I hope they come to their senses. But my hope has been dashed a lot lately.
i too bought an epic pass with the intention of using it for a week at PC. if vail doesn't pony tf up soon, i'm fully prepared to ask my doctor to find something, anything, wrong with me and say that i shouldn't be skiing so i can try to get my pass refunded.
We all look down on others to make ourselves feel good. More valuable to society. And mostly to inflate our own self worth.
Plenty of people are posting, looking down on ski patrolers since they have a cushy ski all day hang out and be cool job.
Do I have the aptitude to be certified in anything medical? No. Do I have the skills to be non judgmental and full of compassion when someone is at their lowest? No.
Can I write computer programs? Solve problems using a computer. No.
The list is endless.
Some how we but a value on skills and that value is randomly assigned a number based on societies assumption of what that skill is worth.
I have laughed endlessly since suddenly skilled trades such as carpenters and car mechanics turned the tables in 2020 and started demanding more money. Leaving homeowners and car owners pisssd off because there was little value assigned to someone who would arrive at your home at 11pm to unclog your pipes for you.
We are going to continue to see an uprising of people who feel their assigned value is wrong. I'm gleeful over all this. The next 5 to 10 years is going to make alot of soon to be dead pull yourself up by your boot straps boomers and soft handed office boys pretty upset that my value is encroaching theirs.
Get ready. Ski patrolers and Starbucks baristas are just the beginning.
Ps I was shit faced last night jamming to cam da guapo posting on my way to the beech.
Lotsa people are not that reasonable and I wouldn’t be surprised if quite a few of them are caught out by the current pricing. Shit, I was. I don’t ski as much as I used to but I’m up there 2-3 days a week or more, on my season pass. I didn’t realize snowbird had topped $150 for peak season till last year. Now it’s way more. Granted I think it’s a small minority who are paying that. I think most people are on Epic or Ikon now.
Still, well over $300 for PCMR? What a joke.
The googles tell me my $15/hr pay when I left Patrol in 2006 would be $23.50 today. Still not adequate for trying to survive in PC. Would be tough even down here in Salt Lake anymore. I made less than that when I moved here and was comfortable as a single guy but still wasn’t thinking about buying a house on that wage.
Good posts Foggy, you’ve got a good perspective on this stuff.

Updates of not much happening.
My situation. I’m currently half way there, I had no plans to use my epic at PC, but son and two friends booked a trip, hard to nail him down and do anything, so I’m going. I can probably ski free with a friend elsewhere. But.
They all bought 3 day epic passes, broke little bastards who cut greens and move holes, lol.
Can they get refunded on an epic three day pass they prepaid, can they ski?
Not sure if previously posted or noted but breck, keystone, cb and pc patrollers sent letter to vail late yesterday. Citing much, including risk of moving trollers from home mtns to PC, and noting $1.6B in stock buybacks and cash dividends by vail in past 3 years.

a different report citing today's letter to VR from the union Patrols -
do others consider skiing PCMRs 'crossing the picket line', or does that only apply to scabs ?
cono- to your question, from the EpicPass website, it appears the multi-day EpicPass is may be refundable ( Good luck )
For sure. Can’t call myself poor but any stretch but I feel it too. I used to think if I ever made as much money as I do now I’d be “rich.” Still don’t feel that secure financially. Guess that’s just how it works but it sucks busting your ass for decades and still wondering if you’ll ever be able to retire.
This is only my take, and I'm not suggesting anyone should feel the same way, but hell nah. The majority of the folks skiing there this week don't even know what ski patrol is or does and just want to have a good vacation (that they booked this summer before the madness began) with their fam.
I'm sure I'll get crucified for saying this lol
I think that’s a fair take.
Because of my respect for their jobs and what they bring to the table, I personally am not going to give my money to a Vail resort. But faulting an unknowing general public?
I hope CB, Keystone and Breck patrols go on strike in solidarity.
Vail resorts doesn’t give a fuck about anything other than increasing shareholder value in the short term. If you want to change the actions of an exec team and board in a company like that you have to hurt their share price and their free cash flow. Literally nothing else matters.
Shut shit down between now and MLK at 4 major vail resorts properties and let the chips fall.
And yes, the entire ski industry and most other parts of the economy are following the enshittification path. I can’t think of a single sector that is better now than it was 5 years ago.
The current state of Arctic Cat seems to reflect on the bicycle industry, and to some extent, this discussion.

Balancing customers, employees and shareholders is pretty critical to long term success. Vail is way out of wack. Their stock is off 5% today
Legally, CB / Keystone / Breck patrols would not be able to strike in solidarity without effectively quitting their jobs. They are not in the same union. They all have active contracts with Vail that almost certainly have a no strike clause. The reason PC patrol is able to strike with job protections is because contract expired and negotiations for renewal has been unsuccessful.
Not saying I like it. But it's in the interest in patrol unions to play be Federal labor law.
Not an attorney, and
it is my understanding filing the Unfair Labor practices complaint is also significant to the strike.
There is also State law - "at will" employment law that may come into play -
This "holiday season" ends Sunday -
to my reading 'wages, including a wage scale for seniority' ( perhaps including back pay for returning patrollers ) has become,,, completely contended.
Today is Day4/5 of mediation ; tomorrow will be Day5/6 ( the union refused to participate last Friday ) ;
I suspect the next step is hearings on the Unfair Labor practices complaints.
Good luck to the patrollers.
( if this is not resolved by January 17th, I do not expect the incoming Administration to have any regard for the union. )
Good luck. skiJ
When you live in a Vail Resort town and your only choice to be able to ski locally is a Vail Resorts property, you purchase the pass, and don't spend another cent more on VR. You choose to eat at other restaurants, you buy from other ski shops, you pay for parking in other lots. This is how local skiers are showing their opinions to VR.
IF you have to travel to go ski, and are aware of the situation with VR in Park City, you should actively choose a different company to spend your money with.
Fucking seriously people you bought a pass and want to now not ski at Vail Resorts for solidarity? If you already paid for your pass, then theoretically costs VR money each time you use it. Don't buy a $30 hamburger, great... but why were you going to do that anyway?
