Looks like snow at the base of Kirkwood. But just took the dog out and it is slushing instantly turning into jacket soaking the moment it hits you. Two cars that were parked out front sometime overnite have a couple of inches accumulation on them.
Windy too. No lifts are turning and there are no lifties out doing their thing yet.
Rune - great shots. we'll have to get together with my 4 year old one day.

We are sitting in the Kirkwood valley and watching it dump heavy rain and slush. We drove down to the local bar last night and the streets were flooded. It's so heavy and wet. Sucks. Good day to read a book. Hoping for cold air.

Almost forgot. Downtown Carson City was flooded last night. I'm sure it's worse today. The center divider was completely covered in front of the capital building and several local businesses had wisely sandbagged their doors. A couple hadn't and will probably find a nice surprise this morning. :( Also, about 2-3 miles of 395 through downtown had cones out closing one of the two southbound lanes. It's nutso out there.

This may be common knowledge, but my roommate was trying to get a friend from RTI, and here is what we have learned.
I-80 at Floriston (right near NV state line) is closed both ways due to huge mud slides. They are claiming it may be closed for 48 hours. Then we looked into the Rose option, and it is closed to due to multiple commercial vehicles crashing.
Looks like there is no getting from Reno to Tahoe.
My house is truckee is getting pounded by rain (9:40 AM).....friggin nasty.

just so there is no confusion...... you could always go south to spooner summit and then go to truckee, it would be a long trip, but there are certainly options. (i know you know this Huck, just wanted to point it out).
(also, i have it on good authority that the temp should drop at least 20 degrees today, as Arty intends on making the ULTIMATE sacrifice and send in his beacon for upgrades)

This is strange, the Reno weatherman just read an update from the national weather service that said sometime around 12pm its gonna start snowing in reno. However he also said that around Tahoe the snow level isnt going to make it down to the lake. According to the weather man the cold air is gonna slide down the east side of the sierra, awesome.:nonono2:

a friend working at sierra just called and said they are open and there's prolly 10 people total out there skiing right now. snow levels are dropping by the minute so hopefully we're turning the corner and chain control on kingsbury is always good to see. at least there's some football on today.:rolleyes:
CHP just said I80 is closed for a minimum of two days.
This is some scary shit....why didn't I buy flood insurance :eek: ....100-500 yr zone my ass....the waterway behind the houses across the street went from 20 ft across to about 500ft across and only has maybe 2 more feet to crest the banks......so I'm sitting here...watching...worrying...water levels are supposed to peak here in a few hours...ugh...

Currently, the i80 closure starts at 89. Note: 89 is closed between i80 and the ski areas. 89 was also closed by emerald bay due to flooding this morning. (last checked around 10am).Quote:

89 South is closed at West River in Truckee because of debris near Cabin Creek, 89 North is closed from Truckee because of flooding. 431 is closed, I80 is closed for 48 hours.

Interstate 80 from Truckee east to the Nevada stateline will be closed for at least 48 hours due to a massive landslide.
The slide ripped across the interstate at about 3 a.m. Saturday five miles east of Truckee. It trapped six big rigs and four Caltrans vehicles, according to Shelly Chernicki, a Caltrans spokeswoman. No injuries were reported, but the vehicles are now stuck in the rugged Truckee River Canyon.
The debris slide started on the west side of the interstate and took out 300 to 400 feet of the center barrier. It has blocked both sides of the roadway.
“We’ve had previous slides, but nothing of this magnitude,” Chernicki said. “Emergency repairs won’t start until the hillside stabilizes.”
Highway 89 south was closed at about 8:15 a.m. from West River Street in Truckee south due to a debris slide near Cabin Creek Road. Officials are not giving an estimated time for Highway 89 to reopen.
Highway 89 north is closed from Truckee to Sierraville due to flooding, Chernicki said.
The closure of I-80 has caused a back-up of big rigs on Highway 267 south in the Martis Valley as they attempt to travel eastward.
At 5:35 a.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service’s forecast was for heavy rainfall to continue through the afternoon. Rain totals so far in region are from 4 to 7 inches. Rainfall totals are predicted to be 6 to 10 inches by the afternoon with “significant” runoff expected to continue later into the day.
Snow levels are forecasted to be 7,500 feet, lowering to 6,500 feet later in the day with accumulations of 8 to 12 inches and up to 24 inches above 8,000 feet.
Just raced around trying to get shots of all of this mess. But there was no possible way to keep lenses and cameras dry with the deluge pouring sideways. The valley of Squaw is a lake...89 is closed from Squaw to Truckee due to mudslides. Reno is getting worked, and from what's going on up here, they still have a LOT of water coming their way. I'm on a hill in Tahoe City and protected from flooding, but at this very moment I'm waiting for the super saturated trees to fall on our house. The surf looks great on the lake, but the overall weather just doesn't look real inviting, especially with a nasty head cold.
So, big pow day tomorrow? I'll be happy if they can open things by noon...

Me too. Its kinda scary seeing the 50+ mph gusts on these 100ft trees standing in basically mud. We just took a trip to downtown truckee to look in on DG's work (she sits below a questionable skylight) and trout creek has jumped the banks and is flooding the church street area of downtown. The truckee river looks HUGE. After a late breakfast we are taking a walk down there. Should have pics later today.Quote:

There is a river across 395 just south of the Mt. Rose Junction with a school bus stuck in it. Traffic backed up to Reno in one direction, probably back to Carson in the other.

Ventured to KW from South Lake this morning. We left at 7:15 am, to arrive at KW at 8:20 am. Pouring rain all the way to Luther Pass where it turned to snow and then back to rain at Hope Valley....until we hit Carson Pass that is:

After we heard they would only open one lift, mid-day....we then turned around and went home. What a great day in the mountains :)
Here's some carnage in Reno...these are the houses across the street from me - there is a walk way under water and the walk goes along a waterway that's normally about 20 ft wide and 4 or 5 feet below the walk - water is creeping into those people's backyards - another 2 or 3 feet and we have ISSUES!!
On a lighter note, I may not be able to leave Verdi!! But i just got a UPS delivery. I got another box from steep and cheap, Two pairs of A-Frames, COOL! Oh and I am making money (Working Saturday)

Solid Snow at 6700' in TD. It got allot colder in the last 30 minutes. (11:45am)
Very High winds and Blizzard conditions at TD Ski Hill condos. Lift is about 300 yards from the condo, I can barely see the chairs.

Sleeting sidways in Verdi now. Somthing differnt is moving in. It was 31Deg here @ 8AM and its cooler now. BTW my heater broke! I am doing the open oven with the fan thing to stay warm.
