What bikes/motors did you rent? What kind of problems? Did they have big mileage on those rental darts? Sucks you had to deal with that on a vacation. They could be the perfect tool to explore a new zone if they didnt have those issuesQuote:

one of the builders bought a new Norco and the motor needed repalcing after 6 trips up the area, probably 15kms, I've also heard of people logging 10,000kms. I think I still got a couple more seasons on this bike, it still runs like it did 3 yrs ago so I'm not in any hurray to buy another E-bike unless it completely shits the bed and i need to cuz i can't find another EP8 motor, I know what a Santa Cruz is, i know where th dealer is and i know SC knows where to put the pivot for the 170mm of travel but I never heard of those other brands
yeah an e-bike definatley has another layer of HW that can break down, and so the end loser has to be OK with this
I've managed to macgyver my way around breakdowns so actulay the only time it completely died was ripping the wire out between the display and the motor
Pretty much the same here. Keep it going. The bike as is covers a wide spectrum.
Hearing of a few people with pinion mgu problems. Nothing major but i think it needs a yr or 2 for me to jump on.
Even more time for that dji system. Plus the us might ban dji because of their drones and being chinese potential spies. Also first review points to not great battery management. That cancels the lower bike wieght if you need a few extra lbs of battery to get where you want to go. Also you need to keep the rpm's up for that power it has. Bosch has it dialed. Best battery management and low rpm grunt. Bluetooth mode adjust and display in the toptube means no wires to pull out as well.
Crestline is the company Aaron Gwin has stake in with his race team and some type of partial ownership deal. Lots of great things being said about the main 2 guys ,that started the company and are the chief operating ops. Major focus on customer service. Those guys go the extra mile. Kind of remind me of Keith from praxis skis and his customer care. Price isnt bad either considering.

The Crestline owners are super responsive and helpful. I was really interested in their eeb when I wanted to get rid of my Levo, but wanted to go down to something midpower. Their bike with a midpower Bosch would be sick. I'm sold on midpower - my Heckler SL is more poppy and playful than my Nomad now.
Any experienced e-bikers have thoughts on these cheap replacement chargers for an inexpensive ebike?

Rented an Orbea Rise light Ebike one day toward the end. Light e-bikes are stupid. It’s like saying, I want a bike that’s heavier than my analog bike, but not super heavy, and I want almost none of the benefit of a motor. Super nice bike. Just a stupid concept.
For next year, we’re thinking about buying Specialized batteries through a shop in Italy and bringing our Levos with batteries pulled out. Our friends could keep the batteries at their place. Not sure if it’s really that detrimental to have a battery sit idle for 12mo at a time. Not sure if there’s any risk of airline rejection of a battery-less Ebike.

My battery always gets charged (unless i forgot to plug it in) and I have checks ... plug-in/ listen for beep/ check display/ look for orange light on charger and in the morning power up check for 5 bars.
I'm a boring old fuck so I don't want adventures in servicing, I don't want sketchy shit, I want a bike that has the dealer in my town, or at least an internet brand that will pay my LBS

That being said you have a good bike. Small parts(wires etc) for shimano can be found online if the distributor doesnt have stock. SC probably has batteries. Motors may take a bit from shimano canada or they have something in stock. YT usa stepped in and got me a motor from shimano canada in less than a week. Worst case , ive been following that polish doods fb page for a few years now and he probably sells 20-30 motors a month. E8000, e7000, ep6 and ep8. The latest were a bunch of ep8's with 100-300km on them and an unused one from guys that converted to ep801. Not sure where they were able to buy ep801 systems. Some motors he's repaired the gear inside or bearings or whatever. Usually he improves the seal and bearing and added seal with a special grease he uses. Ill probably try him when the need arises

sure some folks with bad luck have kacked multiple motors but such has not been the case for me, I duno if E-bike motors actualy breakdown and/or need overhaul as much as we think from simply reading about dead motors on the forums , so who really needs a spare motor ?Quote:

Back when I wrenched for the mother corp we had a spare pool of everything in Toro which makes more sense to me than keeping a spare around ?

Bearings dont have an indefinite life so any of the motors are running on borrowed time. On average , frames should outlast them. I think scoring a cheap spare would ez motor failure anxiety and help a lot with reselling an emtb , rather than just binning it, even if you end up not needing it.
I wish polini sold a bike with their motor in N america. You can get any part at any time from them and theyre built to last. They call tgem built for a lifetime. Supposedly they absolutely haul the mail as well. Im not sure but i think they may even use the shimano mount pattern

Is it bearings or sensors, I read about a whole bunch of dead motors with E010 which indicates sensors from the error codes, a failure that might be bearings i see not so much, but we don't really know how an EP8fails or exaclty what polish bro does and then there are still 5 brands with several models ?
i had E010 which I fixed with firmware update after which its been fine for 2 years, i only run mine in boost to keep it spinning so less load on the bearings but who knows if its better or worse ?

Ya tourque sensor is a biggy. Basically unrepairable. Bearings do go, and an internsl gear sometimes and water ingress can wear out the axle and sleave and ruin the mother board. Everything ,apart from the tourque sensor, is where a maintenance center can be a benefit. Break the seal and clean the shit out, replace anything if need be, use that special sealing grease, new gasket and should be gtg for a while. I think the tourque sensor can detach unexpectedly but i think the major thing that detaches the tourque sensor, and also damages bearings, is a hard pedal case on a rock at speed. I think that played apart in my first motor e010/tourque sensor. I nailed a rock pedaling at speed and it jacked me and tge bike thru the air for a while. Ive heard others point to that as a cause as well. Its tge nature of an emtb to be pedaling thru chunder at higher speed more often than an acoustic bike. Thats why most all the racers go to a 155 or even 150 crank. Suspension sits more into the travel as well. I have pedal strikes on flatish rocky terrain most often. Thats where im trying to carry speed. The ratio of motor power output compared to leg power output is quite skewed to motor power output so long cranks for leverage are unnecessary and just get in the way when youre trying to keep momentum. Guys much taller than me have settled on 155's. Another thing im going to stick with is miranda cranks. Theyre dirt cheap and theyre not as stiff as gooch aftermarket cranks. Mine have last well but they can bend. I finally just tweaked one last week nailing a rock trying to keep up to an ultra fit buddeh on a 90nm levo. Head down and on the struggle bus and tagged a hidden rock. I agree with others that mirandas could save a motor like a breakaway der hanger could save a der. $75 cranks rather thsn a 1k motor. Mine have lasted for 4 years and the one is only slightly tweaked but theres my reason to go to 152 or 155 from my current 160's. Better ride, safer and more durable

Ok, I came up with an idea for a mod. If I could rig up a small pressure pad under the saddle, that immediately switched your assist from walk-mode to Trail or Trail+, that would be super duper neato.
We have all hopped back on, ready to give ‘er the beans on some steep slope, and the bike is still in walk or 0 assist.
Hella frustrating.
Anyone with me on this?

Don’t over think it. Everything with e-bikes is overthought. They don’t need an onboard computer. They don’t need to think. They don’t need 17 power levels.
They need three buttons.
1) Up. It only needs to do one thing.
2) Down. It only needs to do one thing.
3) Walk. You’re either walking, or you’re not walking. But you shouldn’t need to do anything more complicated than just pushing a dedicated button and holding it down. When you let go ……. It stops walking.

Pinion prob has tge best walk mode. When you go and try to use walk mode on shimano youre already in too ez of a gear. You have to lift the rear wheel on a steep slope(ususlly) and spin it into a higher gear to make walk mode noticeable. Pinion mgu it auto shifts into an appropriate gear

I was thinking about this important question and just like not swimming when I go WW kayaking I try not to be in walk as much as possible
walking/ pushing a bike up the hill I didn't clean the walk mode does not have to be very fast, I'm just glad its there, sometimes the Shimano seems to not engage so just hit the switch again
I find the ability to shift to an easier gear using walk mode just standing there is pretty handy but i don't use it for chain lube

Went and rode Saint John tech yesterday. I had to use the walk mode for one hike a bike section. It sux. It goes off and on as you try to keep the button depressed over tricky terrain. All good as i found a very nice emtb zone at rockwood park. Lots of funky rock slab climbs and fun little jumps thrown in all over. Great mix of jank and flow

Velotric is running a pre-BF sale that has the T1 ST Plus at $1150. 70 mile range, torque sensor assist to 28 mph, integrated lights, puncture-proof tires, I'm extremely tempted. I figure it would cut my hour commute to 40-45 minutes, and would be really nice on days when the south wind is going and the headwind pushes the travel time to more like 1:15-1:20.
I'm an E-bike snob so can't help ya but they seem like one of them bikes made out of chinesium that catches fire, but upon googling velotric at least do have dealers so maybe you can at least get service IF they can get parts, a lot of people buy something on-line and there is no real support
Mini rant at the stupidity of speed limits on ebike firmware. Do they not know that anyone that really wants to mess with that stuff will buy a chip on ebay and go 35 mph?
I got a new motor under warranty. Old one worked fine but was noisier than it should have been, the out-of-state shop I bought it from ran the video clips by Fazua and they agreed to replace it. Shop is out of state so offered to connect me with a nearby Fazua dealer for install, or ship it to me to install if I was competent. I got the motor, swapped it over no problems. Well, except that it came direct from Germany apparently and is flashed for the euro 15.5 mph speed limit and 29" wheels. Public software doesn't let you change that stuff. I call nearby shop and ask if I can bring it by for them to flash that, they said that even though they have the dealer software, it won't let them change that stuff. They have to call up Fazua North America, get them on Team Viewer, and then they will change it remotely. JFC, paranoid much? When I had a Levo and the motor got replaced under warranty, the mechanic showed me the Specialized dealer software and offered to set my wheel size as 20" so that I could go 30mph.
Hmmm, so when will we see the new special eds. 50kph to the trail head on a new kenevo would be sweet. Good for the pedally jump trails around here too

I guess i shouldve added that it be near impossible to reach 30mph on almost any trail that isnt a non tech downhill, without a throttle and/or 1000w motor with 150+nm of tourque
