Declining attendance at schools has been a major issue all over the country since Covid. We really fucked up our kids with how long we kept them out of class, despite the science saying they should have gone back.Quote:

We have friends with kids at all of the local middle and elementary schools. They each do it a bit differently. I think some of it depends upon the school and some of it upon the student. This year is a bit of a test run since it's the first year our son is missing full day Friday (along with 1/2 day weds and thurs). We'll see how it goes at Alder Creek MS. We're on week 2.

I am skiing Jackson hole all week, tons of kids skiing the pow days here too. Definitely not in school after a big dump.
I skied from the house Monday and my timing was excellent. Snow turned to rain while I was under the tailgate putting the skis back in the car. After a short tour up Maggie’s with whiskey Monday I was certain things had gone from hero to zero. But I spent the afternoon at Sierra and it skied really well

This is drifty, but affects the local Tahoe communities, the “butts in chairs” ADA financial model for schools in CA needs to change. The CA schools that I’ve been watching are all having a current and/or future major fiscal problem. Staff cuts, program cuts, etc. Around me, it’s back to high encouragement for kids to be coming to school when they’re sick, unless they have a fever or symptoms of noro virus.
Even in SF, there's kids at our schools that are super serious about skiing. Couple kids competing in moguls in my daughter's class and have to miss a fair amount of school but being a private school may be a bit easier. The Spring is the hardest time of year to get in their ski days with soccer and baseball really ramping up.

The kids should stay in school, go to a good college, go to dental school, and ski a minimum of 4 days/week for the rest of their lives. Not counting the month in Europe every year.

I work with or otherwise know several retired urban FF’s. They joke about how many quality years they have left in their life. One is not yet 60. It's very regional. My buddies that work around the lake have it pretty damned good. My brother in law worked in SF. He's medically retired with full pension at 52. He just had a knee replaced. PTSD is a real thing for a lot of them, too.Quote:

I got a finance degree and had a job starting with Shearson Lehman (I think that was their name at that point) in the winter of 89. But then brokers started jumping out of windows in October and all of a sudden I was back in restaurants and shortly after ended up being the F&B director for a fairly distinct Florida country club. Didn’t matter since during high school and college in Florida I caught the ski bug.
If I had ended up with a day job in finance I doubt I would ever be in this god forsaken maggot ridden hellhole

So true. Ironically shutting down schools quickly was done to protect the children with the idea being that they may be more susceptible to COVID just like the Spanish Flu. Once that was found out not to be the case, there is no excuse for the slow reopening which did so much harm that no one wants to talk about it.Quote:

Up Mt Rose summit way yesterday. Was above 40 by noon at 8500'. anywhere in the trees was effected by the trees radiating, grabby. Snow was starting to toast. North facing open areas still held good, somewhat dry snow, but generally need better temps and more snow now most places.
The radar for this morning/afternoon’s frontal passage suggests the snow level was around 9k. It never rained at the base of alpine as far as I know and was snowing heavily to 6,500’ when I left.
I was very impressed with the snow at rose summit yesterday I thought it skied great. 3” on top of styrofoam. Dog hated it
