The current XT3s are the standard version, not LV.

When I measure length using a wall - left is 25.8cm and right is 25.5cm. A similar technique for foot width gets - left 9.5cm and right 9.7cm.

Actually just did a video consultation with a local bootfitter who's independent of any stores/brands (he gets you to take a bunch of photos/measurements of your feet). He reckoned a 25.5 in the Dalbello Lupo line would be the best option for me. What do you reckon about that suggestion? FYI have got skinny calves in addition to narrow ankles/high instep. Apparently Lupos are good for that combo? Also currently have foot numbness issues in the 25.5 XT3s, presumably from my insteps.

Lupo is a decent narrowish fit in the forefoot, but pretty loose in the ankle; calf depends on which liner you get and how they handle the molding (wrap is better for narrow calf). Plus, if you are actually planning on touring the walk mode sucks. 25.5 is probably the right length, though. Lupo is good for tall insteps.

I'd be more inclined to go with a 25.5 Atomic Hawx Ultra XTD, but I'm not there to do the fitting (unless you're in the Pacific Northwest).

Hi Greg! Wow thanks for helping so many out here. I’m currently looking at replacing my 12 year old 29.5 technica agent 120s (heel grind for spurs, zip fits, insoles similar to super feet green, fit is good to great with no pain but they’re too soft). Ive tried to make 28.5s work in the past (mega rides, agent 120s) with heel wedges and toe punches for length but could never get something pain free enough to enjoy. Just picked up a pair of 29.5 and 28.5 technica Mach 1 130 LVs to compare fit and was wondering what you would advise on length and any other shell. Looks like my feet both measure a 29.1. Curious your thoughts. Will scan the QR code above and send you the scans and PM you my email.

Foot Length (L/R): 27.4 / 27.3
Foot Width (L/R): 10.9 / 11.0
Heal Width (L/R): 7.0 / 6.8
Instep Height (L/R): 7.7 / 7.7

My current alpine boots are 2017 Atomic Hawx 120 size 27.5 (100 last). It took a lot of bootfitter work to make these work for my feet. They still fit very tight after several years but work for me in the resort. That said, my feet are pretty beat up at the end of the day. I'm now looking for a touring boot and would appreciate any advice. I would think a larger volume boot would be a better fit to my feet (possibly something like the Technical Radical Pro or Scarpa Maestrale RS ?). Not sure where to go with sizing either.

I’m trying to get into a lighter weight boot and forced to order online as noone around here carries anything in that class.

26.5 OG Krypton’s worked well for me with a pretty serious punch on the outside forefoot. Currently in 26.5 Dalbello Sherpas (pushing 10 years old and pretty shot) they have always been too big over the arch but snug enough with the lace up liner pulled tight. Lupo AX120s fit great out of the box so I ordered the 26.5 Quantum Free 130.

The toe box gets really narrow in those up front and I wore them around the house for a couple hours today. Big toe is jammed in against the shell and outside of foot probably a little to pressured. About one finger length shell fit.

Was thinking maybe a size up in those? I’m concerned the big toe punch would be too big for that thin boot. Maybe the F1? Or the lupo air from last year with the AX120 clog? I’m a little lost, please help!

I wear a green superfoot insole in street shoes and ski boots. Keeps the foot from pronating.

Just scan the QR code shown previously (the most recent one) and let me know your intials in this thread. Those numbers alone shouldn't require that much effort to get a current Hawx Prime to fit - your instep is definitely way above average in height for a 27.5 foot, but a good heat mold with foam over the instep should do it - if not, you can grind the bootboard for more height. I take it you mean the Dynafit Radical Pro or Scarpa Maestrale RS? Neither has an especially tall instep, and the modification options are limited.

The Quantum Free 130 is way narrower in the toebox than the Lupo AX 120, and they run short (but have plenty of room over the forefoot). My feet are similar in size and shape to yours (26.9 length but 111mm and 117mm width) I sized up one from my regular alpine boot size to a 27.5 and punched heavily for width plus I have 1/8" of foam glued over the toe of the liner to fill up some of the extra height.

It’s good to hear the QF can be punched that much as it checks a lot of boxes otherwise

Did you ever try on the Scarpa F1? It looks to have more width up front from the specs and the toe looks more square and less pointy (like my flinstone feet!)

Yes, I've made an F1 fit my foot in a 26.5, but it took some serious punching for width (not sure it felt any better out of the box, but it was a size smaller) - do you have access to a good bootfitter who has experience with Grilamid? The F1 punches easier than the Quantum Free, but you need to be a bit careful of the thin shell.

Yeah, couple fitters with good reps, but need to talk to them about their experience with thinner boots before I commit. This may have to wait until next season until i can spend time Whistler Again.

Or, can you think of anything that may be better out of the box, ie, not cavernous in the heel/ankle with a decent forefoot width in that weight class?

If your forefoot proportions are relatively wider than your midfoot/heel, you should resign yourself to having every new boot punched for width - "out of the box" fit is something for people who only ski 2 or 3 days a year to think about. Touring shells with a floating upper cuff and/or partial/sliding tongue are wider than overlap designs anyway (this applies to pretty much everything in the 1000-1200 gram class, and there aren't that many options to start with). The TLT8 is wider and higher volume, but like I said the extra volume is everywhere (and I'm not a fan of the Speed Nose design).

If you are a new skier, it kind of depends on how ambitious you are, how much time and effort you are willing to put into the sport to improve, and how much you weigh/how tall you are.

I'd normally put a new skier with your measurements in a 27.5 unless they are used to climbing shoes, hockey skates, or have a background in ballet simply for comfort. Your feet are narrower than anything made for recreational skiing, but stick to the "narrow" lasts (e.g. 97mm or 98mm). You can get narrower with a true race boot, but don't go there yet.

You instep is also on the low side (this used to mean Salomon or Lange, but both companies have gradually increased the height of their insteps as people tend not to buy boots that crush their instep in the shop). I'd still say a Salomon S/Max (next year it will be called the S/Pro Alpha) in around a 100 flex. If you're aggressive and eager to learn and will be skiing more than 20 days next season, go with the 26.5.

Thanks! I have no previous experience in those sports you mentioned, but 20 days next season is possible for me, so I might go with 26.5. Also would 100 flex be "grown out of" if I learn to ski more aggressively? For reference I am 5'10" and around 150 - 160 (have not measured in a while) lbs.

Hard to say. If you are a true beginner, 100 is about as high as you want to go for the present. If you progress rapidly, you may "outgrow" that boot in a season, but at 150 lbs. probably not. People have different preferences in terms of boot flex, too, depending on snow, terrain choice, equipment choice on a given day, and "mindset" - I know much bigger guys than you who ski very well (but smoothly) in 110 flex boots at a 7 DIN and have no problem.

You have no way of knowing the answers to most of these questions until you ski more.

Edit my own reply, I am in fact an idiot and found the QR code. Scanned it and the Veryfit linked with evo.

Currently in an OG Cochise 130 pro 27.5 with a ProWrap and punches at the met heads bilaterally and navicular. Also had small big toe punch for length on the longer right foot. Fit has been decent except length is a bit tight on the right foot , especially noticable on walk mode where toe crashes into front of the boot The shells are shot at this point. Wanted to consider another Cochise 130 , but was curious how the new fit is, especially with the BSL being a bit shorter I think for a give size . Don't know if this actually impacts length or is just bc the sole blocks aren't removable anymore

I can't feel a difference in length with the new Cochise vs the old - at any rate, BSL doesn't have a direct correlation to interior shell length beyond the obvious limitations; I have 26.5 boots that fit fine with BSL's from 287 to 310mm . . .

I didn't know such an app existed. My father told me about it today. I'm just shocked. It's interesting enough.

gregL In your opinion/experience, what do you consider the lowest volume 50/50 boot? I'm currently in a Rossi elite 130, but even though a stated 98mm, it is overall too much volume. The boot best fit I've had so far is in the Salomon s/max. I have tried on the shift but is a bigger last/volume ( wish Salomon had a shift in the s/max last). I'm leaning towards an XT3 LV, but would great to know what the short list is of the narrow 50/50 boots. I live in an area where selection is limited and will likely have to order/try on/return to sample a couple options.<br>Thanks

The list isn't long, especially if your ankle and midfoot are also narrow. You are not the only one who wishes Salomon made a Shift Max in the 98mm last . . .

For the time being, it is the Lange XT3 LV and Atomic Hawx Ultra XTD. Let me know if you have other questions, I own both.

Thanks for the reply. I have an older pair of RX130 LVs (2013 I think, the white cuff / green boot version) would the XT3 LV be the same fit or have they changed over the years?
Between the XT3 and the Ultra XTD which one would have:
lowest instep
narrowest cuff
lowest ankle volume/heel pocket

The fit is similar but not exactly the same; forefoot volume is a bit larger and heel retention is a bit better due to improved liners.

Lange has a lower instep, Atomic Ultra has a far narrower cuff, ankle volume is similar but retention is better in the Atomic because the narrower cuff won't let you move vertically.

I'm in 26.5 Salomon S/Max right now but I've been noticing a bit of heel slop. According to the scanner app, I have a high instep and narrow heels.

I want to make a performance upgrade, and I'm on the fence between zipfits or plug boots. What would you recommend for me? If I get plug boots, can a bootfitter make the instep work, or should I go for a specific brand of plug that will have a higher instep?

Check your PM's for my answer. If you want better performance, the first order of business is always to get the shell closer to your foot rather than fill up space with a liner. That likely means dropping to a 25.5 shell (and possibly punching the right toe for length). Whether you can make a 92mm or 93mm last work, and whether you can get the shorter shell to accommodate your instep is a function of who you have as a bootfitter. Of the plug boots on the market, I'd say the Atomic Redsters have a slightly taller instep than the rest, but you'll probably need a combination of localized heating over the instep and bootboard/shell grinding with any of them. There is also the question of whether or not you're comfortable walking around on a sole that's about as slippery as your ski bases, and may need planing just to fit into an ISO9462 binding.

Thanks for the advice here and in the PM! I'm working on finding a good fitter in the Norcal/Tahoe area. StartHaus and Olympic Bootworks have been the two recommended to me.

I hadn't really considered bumping down a mondo, but it makes sense to try. Would you say that 25.5 is borderline and/or mostly for one pair of high performance boots, or is 26.5 definitely too big and I should be in 25.5 across the board?

This is another "no single right answer" question. Most expert/elite skiers with your foot would shoot for a 25.5 for their performance ALPINE boot, and would have someone in mind to work on it. If you planned to tour on it, 26.5 would probably be fine. If you only ski a few times a year and aren't too picky about performance, 26.5 might be too tight, etc.

Again, the primary reason to drop to a 25.5 would be to reduce the width of the shell 2mm, it will take even more effort on the bootfitter's part to make the instep work. I can't really see everything on Verifyt, and I'm not there to help, so I would rely on your bootfitter's judgement.

Don't have the scan handy, but here are my numbers:

Left: 26.4, 96
Right: 26.2, 95

Length is only one part of the equation, volume is equally or more important. I can't really tell you much without seeing your images and width numbers, but if you suspect you need less volume the only real solution is going a size smaller (2mm narrower, plus lower instep and smaller dimensions around the ankle) or going the plug boot route which offers narrower fits down to 92mm. Other than that, about all you can do is shim up the bootboard with Bontex or overpump an injected liner.

I had a couple of questions related to sizing - based on my scans are there any lightweight (~1-1.3 Kg) touring boots you'd recommend for my foot shape? I've had better luck with sizing down when it comes to skiing performance since I have skinny calves and ankles, so I was thinking of looking for something that isn't super low volume in a 25/25.5.

Other question is related to some pain in the medial side of my lower legs - I think an issue with the Peroneus muscles. I find that after a day or two of skiing that the outside of my lower leg gets really sore. I've experienced this in both my Atomics and also a pair of Lange plugs - both 25.5. Neither feels particularly uncomfortable or overly tight though there is a little pressure under the balls of my feet by first metatarsal. I've tried both molded footbeds and cut-to-shape footbeds in both but didn't notice much difference with either arrangement. I didn't notice the pain last season when I was skiing a pair of 26.5 Salomons, but in that case I had bad shin bang from the boots being too high volume.

I'm wondering if sizing down is causing my foot to deform in some way that is causing extra strain on the Peroneus muscles - is that a possibility? Should I look at adding space to the toe or metatarsals?

I think you're referring to the peroneus longus on the lateral side of your leg, right? Sounds like you're working too hard to stabilize your ankle and need to go with a narrower cuff (Hawx Ultra comes to mind, you can widen the forefoot to work with some punching). Other than that, you don't seem to have anything unusual going on (can't see your ankle and calf on the scan unfortunately) other than a slightly tall instep . . .

I believe so. When I tried the Ultra on originally I noticed a fair bit of pressure at the instep on top of my ankle where my foot meets the lower leg - is that something can be adjusted by molding/punching? Appreciate the help!

Usually. The normal approach is to tape foam over the instep before doing the heat mold to get more space there. In your case, it's not just instep height but your oval-shaped lower leg conflicting with the very narrow Hawx Ultra cuff, so the answer is "maybe." There is also the possibility of spot heating the instep after heat molding and/or grinding the bootboard/footbed.
