let’s generalize everyone bc of some redneck’s tshirt
that’s some stable logic
In animal challenge experiments, groups have been able to get cross-protection by increasing the breadth of the antibody response through the use of targeted adjuvants. In essence, certain parts of the viral coat proteins are subject to more genetic dirft than others, but tweaking the host immune response with immunostimulants can broaden the antibody response to include more conserved regions that are cross-reactive and neutralizing. The big problem with many of these immune-broadening compounds is increased reactogenicity- an over stimulation can also lead to a "cytokine storm" which creates a hard path for regulatory approval from a safety perspective. Also, the ferret and mice models do truly capture the human immune response, so some of the compounds work really well in animals but are less favorable at generating a similar response in humans.
I can wear a Lady Gaga meat suit, I’m still an Omnivore. So are you.
That's the awesome and scary thing about this place, it's hard to bullshit on very technical topics here, because there's bound to be a maggot who is actually an expert in that shit.
Tnx for that post Mofro
According to Dr. Fauci--head of the Nat'l Inst of Allergy and Infectious Disease, which is the branch of the NIH that funds vaccine research, influenza is now the number one priority. Seems appropriate, according to the CDC the influenza death toll ranges from 3,300 to 49,000 per year. AIDS kills about 6000/year, although it also causes life long morbidity and the need for very expensive meds. What the change in priority will mean in actual funding remains to be seen.
For those who didn't understand what mofro said--the part of the flu virus that provokes a strong immune respons changes, so you can't make a universal vaccine effective against that part of the virus. There is a part of the virus that doesn't change, but it also doesn't provoke a strong immune response. The challenge is to make that part of the virus provoke a stronger response in the human. This has been accomplished in lab animals but not tried on humans yet.
welp pretty sure i have the flu. second day spent on the couch and haven’t felt this sick in many yrs.
I didn’t get a flu shot basically bc of laziness so it’s my own fault.
andrew got a shot tho so we’re somewhat interested to see if it works for him or if he comes down with it too.

I am sure that there are people here who can speak more technically about it, but from my understanding, if she was already that sick, it will be of limited use for her. The key is to start taking at as soon as possible once you start to feel the onset of symptoms, which is why I make a point of always having it on hand, in the house, at the start of every flu season.
I have relations who can can prescribe it, so I never have any issue getting it prior to being sick. I imagine it shouldn't be too hard to track down.
