North Tahoe--does that still exist? I think it's been petering out the last few years. Last year it was at Homewood as a Ski Swap and Pumpkin Festival. (I usually just get my pumpkins at Safeway, don't want anyone's used pumpkin.)
I think the best deals these days are the Labor Day and Memorial Day weekend parking lot sales at the ski shops. Plenty of used gear as well as new.

Keep an eye on Craigslist too. I'm sort of in the market for used skate gear as well, and was idly browsing CL last season and saw stuff for decent deals.
Sports Basement's used gear sale at our local location last December had TONS of XC gear. Not sure what they'll still have because I bet they're moving out of XC lines, given the leftovers they were selling. New old stock Salomon boots for $5 a pair (so got classic and skate for me, skate for wife, and some for my parents). Carbon skate poles for like $20. Insanity. Their garage sales are different than REI. REI does returns from a given location and sells at that location. SB trucks all their stuff from a given quarter's worth of returns at ALL their stores to one location. I actually like it better than REI. More selection.

*Protocol for an apparent fuse going out is to leave the charge, return in an hour, and explode the charge with a second charge. One can see that it might be tempting to try to relight if you thought erroneously that the fuse had gone out, rather than delay opening an area with skiers and management screaming to get it open. Again, purely baseless speculation on my part. Trying to relight a lit fuse was the cause of a patroller death at Big Sky some years ago--the bigger problem there being 2 rookies doing a route on Big Couloir by themselves. Lack of experience was obviously not the problem in the Squaw incidient.
What's the maggot community consensus on advocating for uphill access around Tahoe? As someone who's up off 431 5ish days a week, I thought all of last spring about trying to work with Rose to get some kind of before hours uphill policy going. I figured there were people with more experience and in a better position to advocate than I am. I think we'd all write off getting someone like tahoe area vail resorts to play ball, but with diamond peak and sugarbowl having policies, makes me think that smaller areas like rose and s@t might be willing to play ball.Quote:

You can hike Rose before and after season and there is great access across the street at Tamarack/Hourglas when there is snow so why hike Rose during the season? To be honest Rose is a pretty small ski area with a large population base and it wouldn't bode well with the downhill skiers to be waiting in line for upwards of a hour watching just a few dawn patrollers blow out the powder or slice up the groomers. Went back to "The Nipple" this afternoon (9.18.17) and was greeted by high winds, brisk (i.e. cold) air, and a thick mantle of ominous grey clouds. I attempted to sit out the impending storm, but after 45-minutes I said "f%&k it" and geared up. I only made 2 runs on the closest patches as the clouds kept accumulating, the wind kept howling, and the snow was semi-boilerplate and "interesting", so say the least.
