Kirkwood isn't happening today for me (Mrs. C.'s work issues), so I'm heading to Mt Rose. Ask me for change: helmet, old yellow/black TNF jacket, black pants... and with any luck in snow conditions, Spatulas on my booties.
7am and alpine reporting 10" in last 24 hours up top. i hate to be a whiny bitch, but only 10"?! oh well, was cold last night, should ski great. plus alpine opening sherwood for the first time this season, so a little hike up and over keyhole should yield sweetness down the backside. have a fun day out there, i am heading to the mtn. now.
Squaw time. Orange predator jacket, grey pred pants, full face giro, gotamas. Be there or be square.
very cold this morning (24 in slt---OK cold for tahoe) bet today at the wood will be good. probably have a whole new mountain to play on.
hopefully you are up there skiing shoelaces! Look forward to your report.
I can't believe I have to work on a gorgeous blue bird day with 12" of fresh.
Please do NOT post photos this afternoon. Please...have mercy.
hmmmmm.....so why is it i usually don't ski resorts on holidays????? oh yeah, CAUSE ITS A FUCKING ZOOO!!!!!!! beauty sunrise on powderhouse w/ about 6-12" of fresh. not as much snow as i'd hoped but still good turns to be had w/ the rain crust more noticable down low. so, went home got the wife and kids together, picked up a friends kwood pass, dropped the kiddies off at a friends, and followed the slowass gapetrain out to kwood. right around caples lake.....blammmo.....cars at a standstill:cussing: . we inched along for a half an hour and weren't making much progress so we flipped a bitch and bailed. gotta think that the cars were backed up just from the amount of people trying to get to kwood. i'm sure it would have taken us at least another hour to inch towards a parking spot. on the way back musta been 15 cars at powderhouse but not a soul on waterhouse proper. i shoulda just taken the wife up for another lap there or we shoulda headed out to kwood earlier then 9 am w/ all the other gapers. now i get to go to work and my wife gets to have a root canal, whoooopeeeeee!!!!
on a positive note, no natural slides anywhere to be seen from the drive so should be some kickass touring this weekend as far away from the holiday crowds as possible.
Oh man, sucks about the traffic, gimpy. I bet there had to be an accident in 'pinball alley' that little stretch of downhill, shady road right above the Kirkwood Inn.
Looking at the webcam it looks like a beautiful, and very crowded day. Probably got tracked out pretty quick.
Doesn't sound like there is gonna be much of a break in the weather to get into the b/c due to continued storms.
Nope...I got skunked. Woke up at 6 AM and had to check in on work for a few things and it just started snowballing.....had to stay home and try to make some money which isn't too bad of an alternative I guess.Quote:

that is a bummer dude, but given how crowded it is, you probably didn't miss much.
yeah, definitely bring the rig. maybe if we get a storm day and the upper lifts don't open we can hit up powderhouse/waterhouse, sounds like the snow level probably will cooperate.
will do....Quote:

(pass and spur). It took me 2 hours to get to the access road where i was told to leave because there is no more parking and kirkwood is closed.
And judging by all the tools on the groomers I think the fresh in the saddle woud've lasted awhile.:cussing: :cussing:
oh man that SUCKS! i have never seen it that bad.
oh well, more storms coming in means no one will venture out there again, maybe we can get lucky and have a storm day without huge winds.
Talked to my buddy at sierra, they're turning people away too.:fuckyou:
what time did you leave south lake?
everyone is trying to ski given it is gonna end up being the best day of the week. it will be empty come monday.
Ok, I'm staying in Marin. I can't be bothered to deal with epic crowds.Quote:

We're both wearing silver helmets, with stickers (ICER, TGR), both skiing (last years) orange Salomon Xtra-Hots.
We'll be in the Wildflower Bakery, at the base, when we get there. Trying to persuade owner Sue to come out and play (she's a great guide to uncommon places at Squaw)
Then waiting in line, it sounds like :frown: Oh well (sigh)
Got caught doing some work this morning and didn't get to the Heavenly Gondola until 8:40 or so. The line was around the corral, but went fast. I made a beeline for Canyon and was greeted with no lines. Saweeeet! First lap was over in the trees towards sky...ugh, a little firm in there from the wind. A little more exploring found me a nice little stash of creamy goodness that I just kept hitting lap after lap. They definitely overreported though. 8-10 was more like 3-4. Still the lift lines were empty until around 10:30 when the gaper hoards arrived.
All in all, it was super fun morning and worth the slight roasting I got when I returned to the office. You see, the whole damn lift system shut down on my way back and I got stuck on sky for 20-30 minutes, then had to wait at the bottom of Comet for the same...pushing back my expected return to the desk. Still, I can't complain. :D
Got to the wood @ 8am. I could already tell it was gonna fill up fast, so I parked at the lower 7 lot for a quick getaway. [I don't really mind parking there now that TC is only a 2 minute ride to 6.]
Took a quick trip up 10 to Eagle, already tracked up. Snow in decent shape, tho. By 9:30 the gapers and tards were in FULL force. I could tell that yeaterday's storm was EXACTLY what KW needed though. The base is in awesome shape now. Stable and the new stuff stuck to it like glue. They must have gotten just a little moisture before the snow came. After a few runs down Sentinel and Oops, I headed back up 10 to 2. I hadn't heard a blast on the wave or Thunder since prolly 10 am. No such luck. Still closed. And AFAIK; it was still closed when I left @ 12:30. Few hucks and 8 nice long runs down my secret spot and didn't hit a single track except my own. I met up with a few BC guys and took them over. [No worries, they're from Steven's anyways.] I could tell they were getting fed up with the lift lines and [as always,] Kirkwood's pathetic corps of "employees." ...I use that term lightly. Snow in Palisades and past Sentinel / Lightning was primo. I guess nobody wanted to take the hike, so whatever.
Left an hour ago & they were turning ppl away. What a fuggin zoo. Oh well. I guess that's what happens when the city slickers roll out of bed at 9, stop at McDonald's for breakfast with the family, stop at Starbucks, stop at the rental shop, can't quite get those chains tight enough, and fuck around on the highway. Better luck next time.
Cliff notes: Lift lines were long and crowded. Lot of idiots out, but my ski day was still great.
dawn patrol successful, was 4th car in the lot this morning at 7:45, got in line at 8:15 and scored first chair on Summit. Booya! Snow was super fast, about 10" of powder sugar on top of wind buff. Peeled off Summit towards Palasides and mached big sweeper turns tdown that, face shots galore, through lower Yellow to Scott. First person up Scott, I was as giddy as a school girl, laughing to myself after that first sweet run and knowing that Scott Chute was mine! all mine! Mached down Scott Chute making sweet pow turns straight back to the chair (where is everyone??). Back up and aired the lip into the tree shot, whoa, snow was alittle punchy here, not as schmoove as first 2 runs, worked my way back over to main chute and goodness. Did that twice more, Scott still deserted at this point.
Ran into Stormday and we hooked uo for some sweet untracked runs under Powerlines (is that it?), then I headed back to Summit. Lines were now bad, people showing up. Thank god for the passholders line that Alpine now has on busy days! "Excuse me, yes, excuse me - front row!"
This is why I love Alpine. As it was starting to get crowded down below, the hikes out to Beaver and Estelle were empty. Slayed Beaver up top, did that twice more. Last run of the day was a 20 min hike out to Estelle, all alone and sat there for 10 mins cathing my breath and enjoing the sunshine and scenery. Hit my favorite spine, was $$ all the way down, so fast and smooth, snow still good at noon here.
Done, headed back to front row parking where it was now mayhem, some ass-hole was waiting for me to change so he could grab my front row spot, and started honking at me!! WTF :fuckyou: So I took my time realll slow like to wipe my skis off, change into street clothes, drink some water, watching this ass hole about to go postal. Then out and back up to home in time to avoid the crowds.
Mission accomplished. Another storm approaches, life is good. Hasve to the get the dog out now. Hope everyone had fun today!
Don't you just love that shit? I make them wait forever. THEN, just when I can tell the guy is mad enough to punch a hole in his windshield if I don't get out of "his" spot.... I trudge off to the lodge to fill my coffee cup. :FIREdevilQuote:

first row parking, no traffic at 7:45, 7th chair kt. west face, 75, dead tree all good up top, dead tree was fucking sweet. east side opened, then headwall spun. fucking buffed out sickness in the slot. c2 bowl was holding all day. got some ill fast turns in the funnel then over to granite. which was holding bigtime in certain zones. corkscrew and break it out were really nice.
the pocket looks sick right now, and main chute and national in the palisades look like freeways. granite peak is stacked too. cant wait for that to go down.
steven s. dallas is already asleep after his first day of the season. he sure picked a good one for the first one.
hotub and champagne time.
so its true. you are gay. glad to see you finally admit that here.Quote:

well then, thank you anton.
Basom and Steven.....glad to hear that today was sweet for you!!
I will be looking for you gents over the weekend!!! Hopefully mother nature buffs it out again for me.
So I have a question. Was Squaw really that good today, or are basom's observations tainted by his relatively recent move from the east?Quote:

I'm glad to hear you had a killer day. And despite all my recent ranting, I don't think you've jinxed us either. Your posts have a noticable lack of shouting in giant letters; and if your head were superimposed on a map of the Tahoe basin, it wouldn't scare away the storms.
Yep, sensational day, even with the crowds at Squaw. Wasn't looking promising with chairs frozen up early and nothing open that hadn't been skied yesterday. But then KT 2nd chair with oldtimer led to an untouched, best Chute 75 run of our lives. Flat as a board and unbelievable--like 2-3" atop a layer that kept you off everything underneath. It wasn't hucking snow--those festivities will begin soon enough. But the windbuff was so good all day in so many places. Ahh... Just what the doctor ordered. Bring on another couple feet!
Don't worry basom. AKA's just jealous because he didn't get to go skiing today.Quote:

I waited there for about 5 minutes and then saw 2 patrollers skating up towards the opening behind eagle's nest to east bowl. A bunch of people were skating after them and I put two and two together and lined up behind the rope. There was about 20 people all lined up right on the closure line and when the patrol yanked it, it was like a fucking skiercross start. I got to east bowl 3rd or 4th and had the best east bowl run of my life. I don't even really remember the condition there it was so fucking good. The rest of the day was pretty good too, headwall and granite were great.
Huck, did you see the tracks coming off then nose, I think it was My Air. Who was that? Craziness.
Hopefully tomorrow'll be as good.
Nooooo...I mean "up at 6, in to work, and over to the gondola at 8:40."Quote:

I liked the crowds (or lack thereof) better when we had 20' of fresh. Then again, we couldn't get to the Wood then either.
"Powerline" is over off of Sherwood and there is an actual power line there. Getting into it is also not obvious and tends to keep untracked lines longer than other areas.Quote:

BTW: they opened Promise Land just after we left Scott's. :cussing: I saw people coming out while I was watching the kids. I was bitter. It was the Mrs. turn to ski. She got into Promise Land and reported that there was good snow between some crusty area. Really. Gentian more shaded and more protected from the wind. I hit Gentian in the afternoon. It was very good up top and in the more treed lines lower down.
Sorry to "rain on the parade" But the Wood rocked today.
#1 It wasn't raining
#2 There are no real crowds if you plan on where to go
#3 Blackout Passes!!!!!!
#4 After multiple laps on 10 I did notice that the traffic was stopped on the highway and every parking space in the valley was full
#5 Getting into the 5/6 lot at 7.15 is a good idea sometimes
#6 AKA doesnt really even ski anymore- so I hear
edit #7 Altitude does make a differance
