Michters has been in short supply in Denver recently (Cruiser?). I have three quarters of a bottle left, but will be panicked if I can't find another back up bottle soon. The biggest issue with rye is that most folks who are buying it are planning on making a Manhattan and not sipping it neat. So there's a limited amount if interest in premium stuff which makes it difficult to stock many of them.

Ok Cruiser, I trust your judgement. You told me I probably couldn't fully appreciate the Grand Cru that I had and you were mostly right. The whole Pappy thing is too hyped. I've been really happy with the Buffalo Trace(barrel select) that I've been drinking. I would like to get a nice bottle of something unique though. Here's the question. I want something in the $50 range and I want to know where to buy it in the Denver(north) area. Any help would be appreciated.
I dunno. There's no shortage of quality whiskey in that price range. That said, your money might be better spent by heading off to Pints Pub or the Bull and Bush for a flight or two of good domestic whiskey first. Both those places will pour you small portions of multiple whiskies so that you can evaluate them side by side. Once you get an idea of what you're loving then you can go seek out a bottle at a LLS. Tell the bartender that you want to buy a good bottle of bourbon but that you want to try sipps of a few of them first. If it's not super busy I'm sure they'll be happy to accommodate you.
I've been drinking a good bit of WL Weller 12yr wheated bourbon lately because I find it to be a good value and a style that I like. But I sure don't mind a sip of something with a little more heat (like Rittenhouse or Buffalo Trace) from time to time either. I'm lucky in that sense though because I have a job that affords me the luxury of not having to invest in a bottle to find out if I like it.

I went to four different liquor stores today and couldn't find any of the special edition Four Roses, major bummer. Did scout out some places that had Jefferson’s Presidential 18, which is old Stitzel-Weller juice. I'm gonna hang on to see if I can score some Pappy 15/20 and if not I'm all about the Jefferson. Pretty much written off getting any of the BTAC stuff, for some reason that stuff seems to go faster than the Van Winkle stuff does.
Went liquor shopping for clients last night, which is fun. Picked up a couple of nice bottles for myself, including Whistlepig 10 year and Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye (which I am saving for a hut trip in January).
Cracked the Whistle Pig last night and was really pleased.
I'll be interested to hear your feedback on the Handy. I was kind of on the fence about buying myself one but I haven't pulled the trigger yet because I still have some hope that a little more Stagg will come our way next week.
I can say that it is the darkest rye I have seen. Never had a unfiltered barrel proof rye (only Bourbon), so excited to try it out.
FINALLY found two bottles of the Four Roses Small Batch Limited Edition. Snagged em up and another Rittenhouse BiB for good measure. I got to talking to the spirit's manager and used Cruiser's bash pappy strategy and the manager went in the back and pulled out a new Eagle Rare. Everything was going smooth until it rang up for $100!!
Told the guy for that price I'd hang out for a GTS or WL Weller, maybe a Saz/Handy. The weird thing is I snagged the Four Roses for around $75 a pop and wiskyadvocate has it's MSRP as $90?
From what I get having spoke to all the places about the BTACs is that the stores don't know when they're going to get it or even how many, just sporadically basically. is that your experience too Cruise?
Local shop has the Jefferson 18. Got there with 5 minutes left on a store-wide 10% off sale, but couldn't bring myself to drop the hundred bones for a bottle. They said VA still hasn't yet dispersed its allotment of Pappy and GTS. He's probably full of shit, but I'm still holding out a little hope that my name will come up. Meantime, been sipping on a bottle of Russell's Reserve 10. Pretty Tasty.
Pappy hype has certainly gotten out of hand, but it's not without merit. it's good stuff, and cost-wise, is a bargain
If it's the 17yo "Antique Collection" it's worth every penny and far better than "GTS or WL Weller, maybe a Saz/Handy." The 10yo should cost <$40.Quote:

Speaking of bourbons in general, there are some cool deals going on with the whole holiday thing coming up. Low prices and free stuff thrown in to boot. I picked up a bottle of Maker's Mark for like $18 at Safeway the other night and it came with some pretty nice wax-dipped glasses. I saw similar stuff for Gentleman Jack (is it any good, by the way?) and several other brands.
Pass on the Gent Jack. Not worth it, it was actually made for Women because the second charcoal filter pass basically takes the burn out of it. But solid on the BT, probably the best bang for buck you can get along with the regular Four Roses.
Also I fear Tip was right about that Eagle Rare bottle. All of Charlotte is dry, there were only two ABC stores that actually got it in the entire county. My upstate SC stores have been worthless and I think they probably got tipped off to the owner's friends.
Picked up some Elmer T Lee (tough to find around here) and Weller Antique this week. For some reason we don't get any Weller 12 in this neck of the woods.

Corn and fruity texture up front with hints of a pepper and a nice long smooth finish. Incredibly silky for a 100 proof bourbon. i think I'll have to keep a bottle around!

My ORVW 12 came in a few days later. It's tasty, but pales in comparison to the Jefferson - not that I was surprised. Meathead put me on the list for Pappy 15, only to inform me months later that they can't get the 15 in VA. I guess the readily available, Stizel Weller Jefferson will have to be an acceptable substitute. :D
what batch number is it? Is it hand written or printed? Apparently there is a lot of hit and miss with those bottles, solid that you got a good one.
Bleh, I'm super unimpressed with costco small batch. Maybe if I was mixing drinks it would be ok, but I'd take Wild Turkey 101 any day over the $20/liter costco stuff.
The 12 is a different bourbon all together than the Jeff... I think of it as my dessert sipper.... the jefferson's is one of the best though... not much can stand up to it.Quote:

Good to see you (twice ;) ) yesterday Mike! And yeah, that's easily the best barrel of Eagle Rare that we have bought yet. For ~$25 I'm not sure how anyone can do a whole lot better.
I just took home some Pappy 13y Rye last night. Holy cow! What a great whiskey for the money. Crushes the 15y Pappy fo sho.
