I am up for doing some work. I have a chain saw, trimmer and one of these for trimming thick brush.

If you can swing the a week off I would recommend the Wilderness First Responder. It is a solid week long course and then you are done. You can then test out of the OEC. WFR has more usefullness outside of ski patrol. Just a thought. I am taking mine next spring. I can get you in touch with a Magic skier that runs a course if you'd like.
As for volunteer days the official ones are going to be 9/25, 10/9 and 10/23. I am posting them today.
I am definitely down for a pre ullrfest day on 10/16. Work until 1ish and then head north.
let me find out who you should talk to. I know there is a class from 11/15-11/22 over in NH. This is run through a group called SCA/Aerie.
Are season passes going to be on sale tomorrow?
Edit: Guess so. Looks like the website was updated.
I just bough a tent in Gear Swap that has been through a few heavy storms, and while it kept him dry in Alaska I expect that our tits are going to get fully soaked.
I'll probably bring some stupid battery powered tools for you guys to make fun of. If possible, it'd be cool to make a quick trip to Windsor and the Harpoon brewery. Hoping to put a few more stamps in my VT beer passport before Winter!
I agree - a WFR course would be a better first step (and much less time commitment). The OEC course parallels an EMT course but with specific info for the backcountry. WFR will give you the solid basics for the care and transport of injured parties. OEC will just do it in greater depth. In my humble opinion. WFR plus the AHA's "CPR for the Healthcare Professional" is an ideal level of training for the average backcountry traveler.
Maybe you can still cancel the OEC? Say a family commitment came up or something. But either way, the OEC course is fantastic. Don't get bummed if you're "stuck" in it.
-BrokeSomeRibs, EMT, PHTLS, WFR, SAR...
That's what I like to hear, and it's a safe bet.
Cool, I'll just stick with the OEC course then. I want the most in-depth learning experience I can manage. Half of the instruction is at the Springfield Red Cross as well, which is ~5mins from home so it shouldn't be too much of a hassle.
I'll (duh!) be making myself available for Magic utilization of course, I'm pseudo-auxillary for just about anything else as it is, so it will be cool to be able to help out on another level. Also, it's pretty important to me to get the adaptive program training as well. I'm all about being fully qualified to run the sitski this year, I want to make it available to those in need of it this year if at all possible.
That and my friends like to break themselves, so it could be a good idea to have some training both on the hill and off it. Next year (maybe in the spring) it's on to avi courses but first thing's first. Always totally stoked to learn new stuff like that!
Blubird and Dowork... I had WFR booked last jan but had to cxl cuz my career got in the way. Wrecked my plans for a season at Alta as well! Not that bad cuz we bought passes at Magic instead. Im trying to do WFR this year sometime. Let me know what you guys come up with. I know Zoar does a full WFR cert in Jan. Not so bad cuz its across the road from B-east so at least you can ski every night after class. DW...WFR no doubt serves you better than the OEC class. Our weekend crash pad is 10 miles up river rd in so Vt.....which makes it schweeet and a bargain on bivi $$.
The guy I have been talking to mentioned a November class near B-East. There is no time for me to get it done while we get ready for the season, but I am definitely taking one next spring.
DoWork, I definitely recommend the WFR course if you're looking for some backcountry care and rescue skills. I have taken 16 hr Wilderness First Aid (WFA), 80 hr Wilderness First Responder (WFR), and 170+ hour Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician (WEMT) courses and I can honestly tell you that the wilderness / long term care portions of the courses don't really differ too much from WFR to WEMT, the 80 hour course is more than comprehensive in terms of backcountry medicine! I have taken courses through Wilderness Medical Associates, NOLS Wilderness Medical Institute, and SOLO and would be happy to share my thoughts/opinions of each with you if you're interested in pursuing a course... let me know!
Thanks, but I'm already locked in for the 12 week OEC course, which is fine because I'd really rather go through the more in depth training. It would have been good to know about the WFR class a few weeks ago, but no biggie.
DJ, This weekend is out for me- my liver has an appointment to be abused up at the Otis Labor Day pig roast. The following weekend is questionable, as I promised I'd help my grandma go through her garage and my late grandfather's tools and such next saturday. Maybe an afternoon assault or Sunday smashfest? From here on out I'm pretty much going to be saturday afternoon trippin' it up there because of the OEC course schedule, but I'm still down to make shit happen so if anyone has a weekend they want to do, let me know and I'll do my best to to work something out and maybe camp Saturday night too.
Can't wait for this heatwave to be over! Working outside (and in my shop) become so much more pleasurable when it's <80!!!!!!!!!
DJ: These are the official volunteer days posted on the Magic site:
Saturday, September 25: Fall Volunteer Day #1
Saturday, October 9: Fall Volunteer Day #2
Saturday, October 23: Fall Volunteer Day #3
Additionally on Saturday, October 16th there will likely be people working during the day [before Ullrfest].

fuck yeah, i have a chain saw and a gas powered trimmer for realllly thick brush. Do we have any other maggot meet ups coming besides the ones stated on Magic's website?
Well, if those teats are drying out on ya and you have a specific weekend you'd like to get out and do a sat -> sunday trip that's not on the list, I'm always down except for when I have family responsibilities to take care of. Just try to give me as much notice as you can and I'll do my damndest to make it happen. I'll probably be heading up next weekend on Saturday afternoon (after I finish helping out grandma) so just a heads up.
Just out of curiosity, where would you be coming from? I'm in WMass, right near where 91 & 90 cross if anybody wants to carpool as well.
I'm coming from Boston ... still trying to figure out the fastest way to Magic from my location.
SMS: depends on how fast you drive on Route 2 and two lane roads vs the longer freeway routes... I like 2>140>12>103 (but I don't live in Boston).
^if you're running a rig with snow tires, skip Chester, cops and traffic suck hard there. I91 to exit 5>left off the ramp>right at stop sign follow to 121>left to Saxton's River and follow signs for CambridgePort and Grafton. In Grafton stay on 121 for ten miles of smooth, beautiful, high snowbank, dirt road pleasure kruise. they do a good job of keeping this stretch plowed and sanded. dumps you out on Rt. 11 about three miles from the hill. it's my preferred route to SouthCentral's best ski area.:D
So long as it's not spring. Unless you're into that... (djspookman)
BUMP!!! This weekend totally snuck up on me, but it is indeed the next volunteer weekend!
Who's heading up? I know UNM is heading up with his "tree hugger" buddies to take a little off the top, I'll be there and even TC is headed down to lend a hand with some painting (I had to talk him out of trying to weedwhack!) so who else is planningon coming out to put a hurtin' on some messy glades?
