I was joking on the scared part. Lines up there can be terrifying and vertigo inducing. Serious stuff and, yes, at least based on what I've read (didn't pull out an inclinometer up there) some of the headwall lines approach 55 degrees. Not to mention the "mellow" 800+ foot 45 degree apron you're either maching (airing) into or cartwheeling down once you've surpassed the headwall. Good old fashion scare yourself on skis fun.Quote:

Oh, and I'd throw a vote for a later (may) date, too.. (as a couple others have said) I've only been twice, but tucks + warm weather= fun and tucks+ cold shitty weather= not so fun. Plus all the snow were getting this year will set up better later on..(although what does my JONG ass know? :frown:) Im IN either way.
Sounds like a great time. Unfortunately I won't be there until the next weekend. But I'll be there the 19-21 with some non-mag, but like minded people if anybody will be there the next weekend.
Not to be Johnny Come-lately here, but I think cornelius/soda/pin/40 pint/whatever you want to call them kegs might be a better bet than a half barrel/full keg/16 gal/whatever you want to call it keg. I've spend lots of time moving kegs, and soda kegs kill it for transport and packing imo. I think they would ride nicely on sleds, but have never tried. I know for sure they do well on your back, in rafts, on snowcats, on luggage racks on snowmobiles, on pack saddles, in a box and with a fox.

Just to let you know, Harvard Cabin is 15 dollars a head. Not total. And there are tent platforms but its 10 dollars to use those, however you do get to use the cabin...it's quite small, and it does shut down april 1st...so its def. not that great of an option for your plans.Quote:

I'm planning to hit Tux on 4/19-4/20 with a few others from here.
I have never skied/hiked Tuxs, therefore my opinion may be nil. When I was living elsewhere, I heard so much about the place and always wanted to ski it, but I was also warned about those that came up not prepared for the backcountry, but for a party.
I have received an email that reiterated my concerns (edited since the email was sent from a friend of a friend and they are not my pics):

Last weekend's snowfall resulted in avalanche activity that hasn't been
seen in a while in Tuckerman Ravine: connection cache was completely
buried by debris from a slide in the bowl, and it came mighty close to running

he'd only seen connection buried once in his 42 years on the hill, and
that was in the legendary winter of '69. He said that .......... had told
him he'd only seen it happen once, and that was in the 1940's. Anyway, for

Maybe I am a bit over concerned, but a few thoughts have entered my mind even before I received this email and opinions from people at AMC.
1) Should we consider changing the date?
2) Do we have beacons for the kegs????
A., way to pull that punch w/the keg-beacons... :) Sort of took the heat out of the concerns voiced earlier in the evening by all of us. I am one who has "gone up w/the lounge chair" but with the education I've had thru TGR and others I have to say I wouldn't go w/out a beacon again (not that Ali would let me).
Can't help but feel all parental about the whole keg thing as while I know practically none of you, I do know that drinking can get out of hand -- and even if it doesn't, if the shit hits the fan, will everyone have their A-game to help even just themselves get out of a bad situation? There are those, up there...
Not TRYING to be a wet blanket, but looking for fun, frolic, and a definite dearth of death...

Tucks is fun but Tucks is and can be dangerous and deadly. I plan to go up to ski. I will have my full compliment of backcountry touring gear including full avalanche equipment. I will drink a couple of beers, but I won't get out of hand. I have a lot of reasons for this, but foremost is safety. I should qualify that this statement is fully dependent on weather and avalanche conditions. If I don't feel it is safe to be in even the bowl, I would choose not to go any hire than Hojo's.
In regards to the date, It is just like any other backcountry location as who knows what it is going to be like at that particular time. Normal avalanche protocol needs to be followed in deciding if it is smart to go up there and then even where it is safe to ski or for that matter sit on that specific day. Traditionally, this is a relatively safe time frame, but this is a way different year snow pack wise. Most people up there have absolutely no clue what so ever could and has happened up there and they will not give it a second thought.
Personal responsibility.
EDIT: Even if avalanche conditions are good, falling ice is always an issue also. I have seen pieces the size of VW's come off the headwall and make it all the way to the floor and entrance into the bowl.
No problem for me ripping the Sherby after a few brews, but no way in hell I'm drinking before skiing the Ravine or Hillmans or what not. I'm with the H-Man. Can be dicey in them their hills and the avy activity this year has been off the charts. Will mellow of course as spring rolls in. ...but who knows? Last April was crazy snow-wise. I'd love to be up there for the mag summit, but will all depend on whether stable conditions and the right weather window coincide.

Was anyone planning on drinking and then skiing?? I always assumed we were talking about skiing for the day then drinking back at the shelters for the evening. So, who is planning on staying up at the shelters for at least Friday night? Might be a good idea to start getting a head count. I am in for staying up there. (that is unless the apres ski party is down in the valley)
