Summit Opening Party Report & Day 3 - Kirkwood
....coming....
:D
EDIT: Christ......I can't even begin to write this report (although I guess that's what I'm doing now). I just tried writing it 4 different times and in 4 different styles...but I can't even find the beginning. (Maybe it's because this little journey started around last June or something). So maybe I'll start at the end.....(which is what this report is no? A cap on the end of a truly insane weekend). Damn, I'm freaking rambling now, just get to the damn point. Get to the damn stories. Get to the damn pictures. Just get to the damn getting. (but it was already got no?)....Ahhhh Yes......it was gotten. Sum was most definitely gotten.
But it's still all a blur right now.....30-40 maggots showing up at Squaw on Saturday morning, heading up KT-22 and all bombing down in swarm. 70 - 80 maggots (estimated, based on cover charges) showing up for the opening summit party to benefit the Sierra Nevada Alliance at Hoss Hoggs. tuffy109 spinning wax. maggots from BC, Quebec, Alberta, Washington, LA, San Francisco, Utah, England, Pennsylvania...from freaking everywhere meeting, drinking, dancing, laughing....stoked to finally put faces to the names and stoked to rip the shit out of whatever Tahoe can throw at 'em......stoked to keep partying after the pub kicked us out at 2 AM and above and beyond all stoked to ski as evidenced by the consistent throng of 20 maggots that stuck together in the crew I was with at Kirkwood and the 40 or so again that showed up at Bub's at "Nacho-thirty".
It's all such a blur.....and its time to sleep....for the love of all maggotry, somebody start posting some pics :D
How to choose which Summit thread to post in . . .
Well, since this is the day 3 and opening rager section, I guess I'll post my weekend report here . . . so many threads to choose from!
Rolled up to Alpine Meadows on Friday not sure what to expect and ran into the C3 (crazy Canadian contingent), some Mammoth maggots, and much of the Kirkwood crew . . . Skier666 led us around and proved that Alpine is beyond a worthy mountain! There's so much terrain there a mere traverse/sidestep away and we had a great crew exploring it! I had a great day meeting new people and letting them convince me to jump off of something bigger than I ever had, skiing around, and enjoying the new terrain. Conditions were surprisingly good - windbuff, pow, corn - you name it!
Saturday was a great day at Squaw - we literally started with at least 30 maggots, a group which could not survive - we were down to a manageable 8 within 2 runs, with my group being led around by Spats in search of cool things to jump off of and lines to ski - I was definitely humbled by Squaw. I've never given that place the credit it deserves - there are amazing lines EVERYWHERE, it's crazy. And it's huge!!! The afternoon was great - hot as hell, but fun! We hiked the Granite Chief and hung out on top basking in the glory of the Sierras . . . amazing country, really! We had a maggot bash in the parking lot at the end of the day, compliments of Kush and the C3 for beverages, and to everyone for good laughs and recollections of the day! We drove back to South Lake to be graced with the most amazing moonrise I've ever seen - huge, orange, and right over the lake!
Got back at 6:30 and headed to Bob Dog's to meet up with Walter Sobchak, Greydon Clark, Gimpy, and their friend Brandyn to determine details for a tour under said moon . . . I was on the fence as to whether or not the legs had anything left in them after a big day at Squaw, especially cuz I was convinced that conditions would be a terrible bulletproof or breakable cuz it had gotten so hot during the day. But, I decided to go along, and we eventually decided to go to false waterhouse and ski the bowl. Gimpy led the way, running to the top, as always, and we were met with one of the best runs I've ever had. Snow was definitely NOT hard, but boot-deep cream cheesy powder instead, and the run was perfectly illuminated, and fresh . . . incredible turns all the way down in the peace of the moonlight and stillness of the night. We made it back to South Lake in time to hit the party by 11:30 and made it in time to share in some of the debauchery, win some of the prizes, see the pole dances, hear Tuffy's good tunes (though sadly lacking in Madonna and Britney Spears!! ;) ), and hang out for the afterparty at lph's . . . good times to say the least!
Today at Kirkwood was another great day . . . all kinds of snow - corn, windbuff, and everything in between. Great conditions everywhere, and a great crew to enjoy them with! By about noon, a crew of ~20 had formed . . . we actually had 19 people ski Westshore . . . the thing was a mogul run by the end of it! Good times though, and a great energy throughout the day!
Truly one of the best weekends I've had in a long time - great to meet and ski with new people, and get to know some that I briefly met at the Utah mini better, and great to hang out with the regular crew . . . I am amazed at the quality of people this board draws and am so thankful for all the good times!
