He was also known as Ull, Uller, or Oller. The Anglo-Saxons knew him as Vulder, while in parts of Germany he is Holler, the husband of Holda. He was the son of Sif (some say Ovandrill), the fertility-goddess of the autumn harvest and an unknown father (presumably a frost giant). His stepfather was Thor, though some say Thor was his father. He married the winter huntress Skadi after she divorced Niord.
His abode was in Ydal ('Yew Valley'). As his name is found in place names in Scandinavia he was obviously once a highly revered god. In summer he retreated northward, into the high mountains, or even into Helheim. However, in winter he assumed Odin's place in Asgard, holding sway also over Midgard.
