WWMD: Cheap storage space help (NSR)

sorry for posting this here, but we are kinda in a jam...

So our fucking insane landlord owns two house in our neighbor hood. The one we live in has no garage and the one about 100 yds away does. We have to be moved out by the 14th and cant move into our new place till the 20th. She said we could put our stuff in the garage during the time we are homeless.

So me and some of my roomates went over their and cleaned out the garage for her. Basically we clean the garage and get a free storage space in return. Anyway, so yesterday we go over there and its FILLED WITH FURNITURE. The fucking dumb whore let someone else put shit in there after she promised it to us. So yesterday she comes over and tries to act like its not a big deal. "You will just have to pay for a storage space now..."

anyway,,,do you think it is more cost/time effective to rent a uhaul instead for the 5 days...fill it, then park it near our new house. Rather than get a storage space probably on the edge of town cause its so last minute?

thing is we have 6 peoples stuff to store...

renting a truck from budget is like 650 bucks!!!, Penske is all booked, and Uhauls are only 24 hours max per rental if moving in-town...

What a bitch.

I would say if the truck rental rate and the storage place rate are the same I would rent the truck. You will only have to load/unload it once instead of having to load stuff into a truck unload it into storage, load it back into the truck and unload it at the new house. I don't know how much stuff you guys have but depending on how big that truck is the stuff should fit. I guess it also depends on how far the storage place is from your new house like you said.

Have you thought about just not moving out on the 14th?

It'll take her at least a week to get any kind of enforcable eviction order against you (most jurisdictions), so that's probably not a concern. If she threatens to take you to court for any hardship or loss she endures, just tell her you had no other options since the garage is full. In fact, tell her today that you're not moving out and see if the garage gets emptied.

The incomming tenants will be inconvienced, but if they signed a lease with the landlady, she'll be obligated to find them accomodations. She may come after you for the motel costs, but you were probably going to be paying for a motel anyways, I'm guessing.

Not trying to be a dick, but you really shouldn't have to pay for her mistake.

thats the whole funny part. She dosent even have the house rented for end of august/sept anyway....the house will most likely be empty for another month or more. She is just being a bitch out of principle and wont let us stay another 5 extra days....even for more money.

this fucking lady is so far removed from reality its not even funny....

I had a landlord like that once. He was a nice guy until he got badly burned by exploding contact-cement, after that he went a little wacko. We ended up moving out because he was too much to bear.

Since no one's moving in, all the more reason to stay the extra 6 days. :)

I'm with shaggy. Tell her that you'll be staying an extra six days. If she complains, tell her that she breached her contract with you by filling up the garage with her own crap after you cleaned it for her.

No matter what happens, she can't possibly evict you in six days. It takes at least a month.

This is better anyway, since you only have to move once instead of twice.

What is the worst that can happen? Take all of our deposits (which we pretty much expect anyway cause this is boulder, and they almost always take your deposit)....

This lady is so weird....she is usually very nice to us and there is a feeling as though there is a possibility of getting our deposits back....thats why we are trying to keep things low key and just get out of here on good terms....

Look on Craig's List (or whatever you're most traffiked classified are) and try to find someone renting a garage. I rented a garage for a couple months between apartments. Also, post a "need to rent space for one week" ad. Sometimes a homeowner will help out cause it makes them feel warm and fuzzy.

Offer the guy in the first one $100 to use it for a week. If I had a rentable space sitting there not making money, I'd take you up on that offer.

well we found some that are 150 for a month for 10x20......

Im all down for just staying till the 20th....my roomates are having a hard time grasping the fact that she is most likely gonna take all of our deposits cause she hasnt rented the place yet for the next year...

Sad thing is that that's about normal for storage locker space. Total fucking rip off. But then, if ya need a storage locker, it's because you have no other options -- and they know it.

How much in deposits does she have? 1 month? 1/2 month? Maybe being "nice" with her and offering her an extra 6 days rent will smooth the situation.

an extra six days of rent = $600.00.....not worth it....this way we get out of here on time, and have the possibility of getting our deposits back....

Isn't there a small army of front range maggots? I would hate to think that none of them could help you out. I'd offer some space myself, except I doubt renting a uhaul to bring your crap to aspen would be cheap.

If the maggots can't hook you up, I'd suggest calmly and reasonably explaining that since she filled the garage, and you really can't afford a storage rental, you really just have no options, and could she please find it in her heart to let you stay another few days. Offer for all of you to cook her dinner, or mow her lawn or some shit. Just make sure she comes through on her part of the bargain.

If all hope of getting your deposit back is gone, then I'd say its time to get nasty. How much time did you spend cleaning the garage for her? If she breached the verbal (i assume) contract with you and just used you to clean the place, I would demand that she pay you for your time. Said payment could come in monetary form, or it could just come in another couple days free housing. If she doesn't like that idea, then fuck her, just don't move out, and throw some wild parties in the next week.

I don't get it. What's the legal basis for the landlord just taking your damage deposit? Aren't there laws and/or tenants advocacy organizations to prevent that?

Frankly, I would just stay in the house if I knew for certain that she was going to do a runner with the damage deposit. Mind you, I'd like one of the legal mags to weigh in here so you know what the consequences (if any) might be, so you can minimize any risk.

Im pretty sure there it, but they always just put on the deduction sheet, "Cleaning: $100/hour for X amount of hours".....generally it will be like 6 or 7 hours....whatever they can do to take about 80-90% of the deposit....total BS.

Anyway, we allready moved a ton of shit to our storage space....

she'll just rip off the next set of students in August. On the hill (which is where most student housing is, landlords seldom pay back deposits unless forced to).
