Tell the dude what he wants to hear, then f the bejesus out his daughter/niece/whatever.
That would be the obvious maneuver. I'm looking for something a little more tactful. Something that might leave him scratching his head for a while.

Those kinds of comments never fail to piss me off. I usually gave 'em a "riiight..." or a quick change of the subject, depending on how much I respected them. Besides not being very creative and a sort of comical feather puffing....isn't it enough to just make it obvious how much you love your niece/daughter/whatever? Those kinds of comments seem to stem more from their own insecurity than any genuine protective impulse.
I was always more impressed by the more subtle messages...like lifting a mostly full 55gallon drum into the back of a pickup or showing off your guns...
