Reality Check

In the last week 2 seperate parties, containing 5 five people I know well, have been caught in avalanches. Today my next door neighbor lost her life. I don't come here to vent, be consoled, or look for support, my only hope is for one person here to realize that this does happen and can happen to those you care for.
Ive lurked here long enough to see the bc glorified and watch as more and more people barter for AT gear. Dont assume you have the skill set to be safe and never let down your guard. The people involved in these incidents have a 100+ years of bc experience among them and were still caught. Slopes that havn't slid in 10+ years can, and will bury you to your neck and break bones.

Be careful, be more careful than you already thought you were being.

You bring up a good point. I guess its easy to let your guard down, and become complacent with familiar terrain. I guess if you are unsure of the snow pack , you should be choosing to ski green light terrain (less than 30 degrees) to ski. In my mind, touring is a like nice walk/skin thru the BC with friends and fresh air with the bonus of skiing some safe lines in the end. The BC is not the place to be searching out extreme terrain.

Due to various events, my guard has been up extra high recently. For whatever reason, people seem to be willing to push it lately.

Well where are we supposed to find the extreme terrain then? Seriously though, most of the best lines out there in the world are not in bounds at resorts, or even near to resorts. Any extreme terrain at resorts near me are tracked out within hours of storms, so the BC is the best place to find untracked, difficult terrain consistently. The BC is what you make of it, and just because others are willing to take certain more risks to access this "extreme" terrain, I dont think it is anyones place to judge. It is only their place to spread education, and help people tackle their lines while being as safe as possible.
