hmmm...I hope it is total BS; just the fact that I saw it on National Geographic's website (which, in general I believe to be mostly factual in their reporting) led me to believe there's clout behind it.

However, I would not be suprised if it was true. Dogs are not highly regarded in 3rd world countries (is Reunion Island 3rd world? no idea...)

Why do you say this? I could be mistaken, but I did not see where, in that article, it said that this stuff is not happening. ...just less prevalent than some are trying to make it out to be.
