So, St. Jerry and subsequently possibly the St. Jerry clan, all of us currently being just Mericans, may have the ability to get dual citizenship. While do not having any intention of moving up north, it does not seem like a bad insurance policy in case sh-t really-really goes sideways here.</p>

So, I'd image some on the TGRs have dual citizenship. Pros/cons? Possible pitfalls?</p>

Seems like a Canadian passport would be useful traveling abroad. But take the US one to get back into the country or you might wind up in Gitmo.
I'm Cdn citizen in the US on a green card. I've been eligible to apply for citizenship for a while now. The main reason I haven't is that the US requires citizens to file and pay taxes even if they are not US residents. So if I moved home, I'd have to deal with that hassle. With tax treaties you should generally come out even since US credits taxes paid to Canada. But I'm sure there are instances where it would not come out equal. Living in the US I am not required to file or pay Canadian taxes. US is one of the few countries that has this requirement. Being able to vote, and not get deported if convicted of a crime, would be the main benefits to getting dual citizenship.
Can you apply for Canadian citizenship if you have never lived in Canada? I applied for proof of Canadian citizenship for my kids last summer and am trying to recall the requirements.
Or maybe you have a parent who is/was Canadian? I think that gives you automatic citizenship, but maybe not your kids if you never lived in Canada?
What I am saying, I guess, is fuck if I know.
I'm dual (American by birth; acquired Canadian citizenship as a kid a number of years after my dad was recruited for a job there). In my experience, there's no downside. I live in the states, and Canada just ignores me. But when I lived (as an adult) in Canada the US still wanted their cut.
As long as you meet the requirements for citizenship it shouldn't matter if you've never lived in Canada. Lots of Canadian NHL players had kids born in the US who would be eligible based on parents citizenship even though they may never have lived in Canada. If your parents are Canadian, I believe you qualify automatically. Not sure about your own kids if you have not applied for citizenship yourself.Quote:

evdog, my kids qualified even though they have never lived in Canada because I was born there. What I am not sure about is what happens with the kids of someone who has never lived in Canada but qualifies themselves.
i.e. Will my grandkids qualify if my kids never live in Canada?
Maybe I will encourage them to head up there when they/their wife are 9 months pregnant for some anchor babying.
When I applied for my children's Canadian citizenship 10 years ago? The only stipulation at that time was my children could have citizenship but not their children. I think I may have read that changed, but I'm uncertain. So long as you have a parent that was Canadian it should be pretty easy.Quote:

I renounced my US citizenship before the birth of our son after living in Canada since I was 7, not regretting that decision...was born in US with my siblings, Canadian dad American Mom, so us kids all had dual citizenship. My siblings both live in US and are waiting on updated guidance/policy from Canadian government which should allow my nieces and nephews who are US born too, to also obtain Canadian citizenship.

Not discounting the rights of those eligible for dual citizenship, but remember that if ‘shit really goes sideways’ Canada has good pedigree at accepting refugees. I implore those still able in the US (upper middle class cis-gendered white males especially) to take opportunity to apply every power at their disposal to correct the course their country is taking before running north to sanctuary. I'll just add this: Canadian taxation on income is based on residency. And they can (and often will) deem people residents if they own any form of housing in Canada - even if they haven't set foot in the country during that tax year.Quote:
