Not sure this works. I've called restaurants dives and drank in nice bars.
I agree that there are many nice bars that aren't dives. But a real dive is a bar that smells bad, has a bar that your elbows stick to, serves shitty booze and beer and has shitter that you piss into from the door way rather than walk into.
A lousy restaurant would be a dump rather than a dive.
Mebbe it's an old school use of the word but hey I'm traditional.
No I think a dive is definitely a bar.
"With all due respect" - if you're saying it, you have already assigned the level of respect which you believe is due.
"and/or" Choose the one you mean. A sign that says 'no food or drinks' surely does not mean that its OK as long as you have both. A sign that says 'no food and drinks' does not mean that its OK as long as you don't have both.
As a self-described connoisseur of dives I have to say that the redundancy of 'bar' doesn't annoy me so much, but a dive is most certainly always a bar.
Table Mesa.
I'm with Mazderati. I would definitely describe certain restaurants/diners I've been to as dives.
Wouldn't that be a greasy spoon?
The way architects/engineers/designers use the term "belt and suspenders" as a positive selling point on a redundancy in a design drives me crazy
So.... you think your design has a probability of failure? So instead of fixing the design, you are adding redundancy? And you treat it as a positive selling point? You do know the synonym of "redundant" is "unnecessary"......
If someone actually wore a belt and suspenders, they would look like an idiot. Because, you know, the belt makes the suspenders unnecessary....
Naan bread and pho soup should work.

ha! I was redundant on the redundancy thread
Sweet...
there is a redundant thread about words that may or may not go together.
Good on you OP for preserving the content of the original and preventing thread drift.
