Depends on the course and what you think your strengths/fears are. For the one at DV I went w/fullface & goggles (it was early and cool anyway), elbow and knee pads, clipless pedals, XC bike, no pack or tools. My logic is just that on a DH bike - aside from the fact that the spare tube and heavy duty levers weighs like 2 lbs, it takes a ton of time to get thru-axels and DH tires off the rims - you lost by more time than the other people were racing if you tried to change it out there. Just avoid the rocks and ride it down. Though on my XC bike it takes less time - it's still a short race, but the rims are less likely to hold up to riding a flat down... But that was a shorter course too - winning times were like 8 minutes, and the only climb was at the beginning. Might want a camelbak for this one... for some water too, but it's kindof a tossup.
