Zipline and Paddleboards: Why?

My wife and kids are always telling me we need to go ziplining someday. It looks incredibly slow, dull, and boring and overpriced. They always seem to be next to roads or rivers which seem way more fun to navigate. Why do people need a helmet? Where is the thrill? Is it something you have to get drunk or high to enjoy like Epcot? I could see ziplining over a chasm and letting go and falling 30 feet into a lake or something or riding one down a mountain around corners like an alpine slide. That might be fun. I don't get it otherwise.

Paddleboarding. My wife and kids are always telling me we need to Paddleboard. I used to think it was a super gay deal for people too uncoordinated to ride windsurfers but recent paddleboard surfing videos and watching dudes flyfish from them has changed my mind. Paddleboards are cool because they can be used to do cool things. I think I get it now sort of.

I went ziplining in Roatan. It was fun and you needed a helmet in case you bashed your head into stuff. The end.

They should give uzis to kids when they zip line. That might be fun.

Some zip lines are boring as fuck. No speed, no danger. Others are sort of sketchy, fast and you get to control it. Those are much more fun.

Paddleboards are ok for excersise or for touring around places (basically kayak replacements), but you can actually surf them if you're on a coast, or ride whitewater on a river. Same as the zip lines, you can make them sketchy or not.

Both are cheaper than a day at Epcot. So you got that going for you.

I ziplined once and it was fun, but definitely overpriced. This was at Whistler. For about or slightly more than the price of a life ticket you get a total of probably five minutes of ziplining. Wow, what a deal!

I was just down by Crested Butte and guys were throwing fly's from them while standing up on a lake and ripping the shit out of some playful little trout. Looked like a ton of fun and I can't think of anything that compact and easy to haul around that you can stand on and fish from.

Just buy some rollerblades and be done with it.

We set up a zip at my folks place in the mountains. ~200 ft long with a top end speed somewhere 20-25 mph when you are hitting the bungee brake. No helmets or harnesses req'd, it's pretty fun.

Start platform is 20ft off the ground so it could be used in winter too but with 10ft of base, you still run into the snow before the brake. Mostly it kept my old man busy on a project for a while and out of everybody's hair.

If you got some clear water, paddleboarding gives you a better view down into the depths than a lot of other waterborne options. Have heard tourists get serious vertigo on paddleboard tours in Lake Tahoe from buddies who run them, since you can be looking 70 feet straight down on a clear day. Having spent several hours pounding into a headwind and waves on one, know that kayaks are faster/less effort for sure. Good balance/core workout. Fun way to dick around but are kind of a PITA if you're trying to cover lots of distance IMO.

Ziplinig is the new summer cash cow for ski resorts. It's easy for the trundling, mouth-breathing masses to do and Johnny Sea Level from Atlanta can go back to all his buds and tell them how extreme it was.

Full disclosure; did it once when the ex bought me a session for my birthday. It was fun, but only because I did every zip upside down or backwards. Overpriced? Pretty much.

It started out with a 4 mile rigid inflatable boat ride with twin Yamaha 175's, then a 12 mile Unimog slog up dirt roads to Vallarta Adventures, then a 1 mile mule ride to the starting point. One line was a repel down a waterfall, and one was a 45* line into a pool of water. A couple were were over a 100 meters high.
