On snow days at my local I’m going to be sitting on snow riding slow (fixed grip chairlifts), and inevitably within a few hours my ass is going to be wet. No matter that I have the latest and greatest Arcteryx Gore Pro bibs that I wash and retreat diligently, they still aren’t up to the task. Gear has been getting substantial better over the years, and I mostly remain dry, warm and functional through a day of storm skiing, but I’m still getting a wet butt. Getting technical: when sitting on a snowy chairlift the warmth of my body melts even cold snow, and my body weight focused through my sitz bones creates enough pressure to overwhelm the hydrostatic head of the membrane. It seems obvious to me that for chairlift riding the seat area of my pants needs to be completely impermeable and should feature a layer of thin uncompressable insulation. No, I don’t want a beaver tail, just a pair of ski pants that actually work.
