I mean I think the biggest fear would be switching to unlimited ikon. pretty sure they want more people there for the regular (non powder day/ holiday) m-th and now that they are already going to be controlling the amount of cars allowed to park there on weekends this sets them up to do that. I don't see Alterra giving a shit about a vibe.

I read from an employee that, for now, Alterra has no plans to change F&B or employees and that the parking decision was made by the prior owner and not by their direction prior to the approval of the sale.

Depends on if Loveland bootlicks the ridge. It's a neighborly symbiotic relationship.

Parking and paying for ikon unlimited next season are the two changes that will affect me directly.

What concerns me most, though, is the slow erosion of authenticity and uniqueness.

Watching this thread is emotional when countless special days of my life revolved around A Basin. Camelot.

I still feel the vibe at Monarch. Not the terrain of course, but the terrain is fine. I have plenty of terrain at Copper without the vibe. Anyway, I hope some of you yahoos will come and ski a day or two at Monarch this year. Ride fixed doubles, ski to your truck, have a fire, let the dogs run around. It's still happening just like it did at the beach by the molly hogan gnar. There's even some nice maggots around.

The parking change makes no sense if Alterra didn't have a say. Why would you implement a huge disruption that entails a fair amount of work to implement, if you knew you were handing over the keys before the change is enacted? Maybe it was to include extra revenue in their forecasts, but I think they were under contract before the decision was made.

Oh it made it onto the projected earnings sheets... millions of dollars of revenue from parking. The multinational megacorp specializing in commercial RE that owned Abasin and sold it to Alterra certainly sent in the green visor army to work with Al on ways to make the books look better to get the best price from Alterra. Parking was a some meetings, emails, and of strokes of a pen to add 7 figures of green. No capital infrastructure needed, very few if any FTEs.

I'm not saying it wasn't motivated by the sale, but I am saying that from what I read, Alterra wasn't the one pushing it or mandating it.

A-Basin skiers can eat a bag of dicks

The things that I think will keep A-Basin “real”: Limited parking, like I70, acts as a sieve. Once on mountain, even on busy days, there’s plenty of quiet. Also it’s a hard mountain. Limited greens and blues keeps a huge segment of the skier population away. So does the windswept exposed alpine zone. Finally, there’s no village. Fingers crossed it doesn’t change from where it is now.

It may have been a move to boost revenue on the pro-forma, but something needed to be done. Weekend parking was a shitshow last season, bumper to bumper traffic in both directions on 6 waiting to park. Last Chance lots would be full by 9:30, then they'd park (illegally) on the highway. They were parking 3 deep at the pull-off above the Basin.

I don't think you will ever see a "village" set up. Pay to park on weekends is too rich to pass up. Money for nothing.

I've definitely seen some village people on the beach over the years.

Good for them! First responders are all grossly underpaid.
