Definitely looks like the interior is going to get the business along with the Big Bend region in FL...

My mother lives in the Big Bend region of Florida. Over the past 125 years the area saw only 3 major hurricanes including Idalia in 2023. While it looks like this one will stay west of a direct hit, they're going to get hurricane force winds and 10-15ft storm surge for the 3rd time in 2 years. Shit is changing. Fast.

Same friend told his neighbor to fill up the D5, gas up the chainsaws and get ready to be out of power for at least a week. Bummer is his folks are in town from FL thinking he'd be far enough north to get away from any big threat.

The best part of this hurricane is getting to see our local smokeshow of a meteorologist 24/7:

As of yesterday evening, friend in Tallahassee wasn’t sure of plans. He was still trying to get home (or a reasonable meeting point) from biz travel at the beginning of the week. Their typical get out of dodge locations are all in the pathway of large destruction. Lots of elderly family to be considering, too.

Starting to get nasty here. The rain accumulation is a nightmare. Public schools closed today and tomorrow. Got word that the kiddo's school is closed tomorrow a few hours ago.

Then I check my email and see that the liquor store is reminding people to "Stock up on essentials for Helene!" Good to know they're looking out for what's important.

I’m there in the purple in western nc. Been raining hard since midnight. Creeks are up and standing water everywhere. If we get anywhere near as much rain as they’re saying, it’s gonna be a bad deal.

Can’t imagine what those creeks and rivers in GSMNP look like around Bryson City.

    Stay dry man.

Where’s iceman with the link to that cool weather/wind website that shows a flowy real time look at the storm?

Life just went FUBAR for my brother. Eye of the hurricane will go right over them, expected to still be classified as a hurricane.

He woke up in severe pain and went to the ER. His gall bladder turned gangrene and they did abdominal surgery just now and he has to stay overnight, and possibly another night due to the risk of infection from the gangrene. His wife, who has dementia, is at home in the basement.

Surgery was successful so I am not worried about him.

But I am very worried about his wife. He is worried about her too, but nothing he can do. She called in tears asking me to promise to take of her if my brother dies. Her dementia is still in the early stages, but she is very confused about all of this.

I loaded 2 chainsaws, 2 jerrycans of gas, 4 cases of water, a solar panel with Jackery, and a bunch of cash in case credit cards don’t work. I’ve got a Bronco, so hopefully with the chainsaw and a winch I can cut my way in and get to her if needed. They live in a very rural area, miles of dirt roads to get to them. Not many neighbors.

I departed Wisconsin and will stage in central Illinois tonight. If she is in trouble tomorrow morning I will continue south. Hopefully she is fine and I can turn around.

Best of luck to your bro and SIL, Harry!

My friend in Tallahassee got him and his family to Alabama. They are lucky.

Saw a report from a storm plane: super cells observed on the NW eye wall and 151 knot winds observed 300m about ground on the NE eye wall. Hurricane warning extends to Atlanta.

Geez, Harry that’s gut-wrenching. Hope to hear that all is well and you’re not needed to keep going. If you do and need a break while heading along I-75 or need supplies, let me know and I’ll toss you some gear or buy you a coffee/beer.
