5000 cfm? Better keep the windows open when you're running that. Or stop burning shit and get a smaller fan.

Ok, maybe 5,000 cfm is overkill. But at least 2,000. The ski club I was a member at in NH had a commercial hood and dishwasher and I still pine for both. If you ran the hood with the (leaky built in 1880 lodge) widows closed and a had a small fire going in the fireplace you could actually reverse the draft. And forget about lighting a fire if the fan was going without a window open. It was also the only hood I’ve really ever cooked under that could support searing steaks without smoking up the kitchen.

I guess she wanted to help pick specs on the replacement and fully get the details. Fine, agreed, we should operate that way.

Fast forward to last month she said that we need to remodel the bathroom. I figure we'll have a deep discussion about costs, process, timing etc. before moving forward. Wrong....I come home from a weekend away and she has ripped half a wall out. I know that I should just bite my tongue, but I'll probably bring up the water heater discussion even though I know that this will be totally different for whatever reason. Wish me luck.
That is funny. I am glad my wife just complains about it, and does not actually ever start the demo. She constantly brought up the need for a walk in closet at our last home. She felt it would be a simple project I could do easily over a weekend. Knock out a wall in the closet and extend into the attic. Three issues. I'm not exactly a hand man when it comes to construction, I did not want to deal with it, AND whenever you went into this attic for more than 5 seconds, you'd come out sweating like a pig as it was 150 degrees in the summer...I'm sure it could have been insulated and been fine, but this was not exactly a trivial project, and certainly not one that was a priority in my view.

I will admit to her having fairly good sense of things remodel's \ home improvements...but this did not seem to be one of them.

She watches too much TV. My wife thinks it takes forty five minutes to remodel a bathroom. Including tile work.

There is a large difference between how long a project will take if done by a contractor with 2 workers and decades of shared experience Vs. done by a single DIY dude flying by the seat of his pants. Wives seem to not grasp that. How long something should take Vs, how long it will take.

Yep, and if I try, I'll undoubtedly screw something up making me question why I even did it in the first case.

On an unrelated note, our new place has walk-in closets. I am sure it will come as no surprise to anyone here...for some reason, it's just as full as the old small one used to be. Cherry on the cake...we pretty much wear the same clothes and I'd venture to guess over 75% of the stuff in the closet, NEVER is touched...

This. I'm starting to wonder if my wife is a hoarder. Won't throw things away. Thinks it's wasteful, which I guess it is. But JHC.

What's wasteful is having stuff in storage that could be donated and put to good use by somebody else.

HGTV has seriously skewed people's perspectives of reasonable project timelines. Especially shows where they bang out a hastily (and shoddily) done remodel over a weekend. Or how they show how "simple" a project is, as the host lays down the last stone or brick, but if you pay attention you see an entire crew of workers hustling in the background. I've heard nightmare stories about those "Love it or List it" remodels, both from the homeowners' AND the contractors' perspectives. Sucked all the way around, except for the network of course.

Ladies. Pay attention to this one, please... HGTV timeframes are NOT realistic. Even if your skilled DIY husband has the ability to work at light speed, there will ALWAYS be complications. I need to add this frustration too. Unlike us husbands, contractors aren't getting pulled away every two seconds to deal with the kids or family obligations over the weekend. Gotta love it when she wants you to work on that big kitchen project over the weekend, but then on Saturday she'll be like "Oh, come on. I want you to spend time with the family. Let's go on a hike." "But I thought you wanted that island finished?" "It's ok. Family time's more important." "Fine." Then come Sunday night, she be like "Why's the island taking so long?"

Oh man, a ton of those movies are filmed around the town square a few blocks from my parents house in GA. It is pretty funny to see CGI snow falling in GA in a movie filmed in July.

Which brings me to: HGTV and other networks should be banned for all the marital strife they cause.

I did a kitchen renovation when we lived in New Jersey. I had everything lined up in advance and took a two week stay-cation and knocked it out. If I have things lined up and nobody in my way then I can get things done. I did everything but the tile work. For those two weeks my wife was in Ireland at a family reunion so I had no distractions. After that she always thought it would be a great experience to do another job like that together, you know, just me and her. I said no out of a sense of self preservation.

So trying to sell my triathlon bike (Felt). Wife says coworker wants to buy it. Cool. Headed out this morning, and she says front tire is low, dude is coming in the afternoon, how does she fill it up. Look at my watch and say I’ll take care of it. Response is “ I know how to fill up a fucking bike tire”. Cool, it’s a Schraeder valve, make sure you loosen the top before. My phone starts blowing up around 4pm, she breaks the stem, tire completely flat. Did you open the valve stem, I ask? “You didn’t tell me to do that”. Bike is still for sale, FYI. JFC

Went to play golf with the gang in 90 deg weather wearing what some people in PA call "West Coast Pants". Light poly convertible to shorts. Cool and comfortable. I always wear them legs zipped on. She says "You'll be the only one there who's not wearing shorts". How is she always right?
