Da, is just like tractor. We change oil, we put into fuel tank, good? My brother, he make head gasket from tin roof, runs great. Strong like bull, you don't worry!

Shut 'er down boys, this is it.

This 1995 Toyota Land Cruiser was purchased new by the seller, and it now shows 519k miles. The truck is powered by a 4.5L 1FZ-FE inline-six linked with a four-speed automatic, a dual-range transfer case, and locking front, center, and rear differentials.

    Bump.

EPA just released the MPG figures for the new LC. Unfortunately (but not surprisingly) it's not the 27 mpg combined that had been floated around. But 23mpg combined with 25 mpg highway is pretty solid. Tahoe is the same or less weight and manages 20mpg highway.

Anyone care to talk me out of spending 20-ish grand on a clean FJ80? The heart wants it. The head says buying a 30yr old truck might not be the best move, but after having some late 80s pickups, and a 1st gen Tacoma, I know how reliable these machines typically are. Are there lesser known drawbacks for the land cruisers? Ultimately I need a reliable go-anywhere dadmobile that can comfortably fit 4 people and a dog plus all our shit for road trips and camping. I have a company vehicle for work, so it would mainly be a driveway princess/weekend warrior.

I plan to keep it longterm/forever, and prices have come back down to earth after covid drove them up 4 years ago. So it seems like now is the time. I don’t make dentist money like some of you, so can’t afford the 100/200 series. I love the look of the FJ60s, but should probably have something a little more modern. Why shouldn’t I do it?

Unless it's been gone through top to bottom, it's still a 30 year old vehicle with 30 year old rubber and plastic. And sizeable mileage in that price range. Road trips with smaller kids would make me uneasy. Signed, Toyota Fanboi.

My buddy just scored a really nice 80 series for around $30k...which was considered a deal. If you love the 80 series and want a car to drive forever, spending 20-ish is a no brainer. Make sure rust is minimal, everything else can be replaced over time.

I have a 100 series here in Maine that I am considering selling. Under $10 grand. Originally from FL, not crusty, 338,000 miles but have all records. PM me if interested, I’d love to see it go to a Mag.

As for drawbacks: it's a big-ish vehicle but for all that girth.... it's frankly kind of small inside. If you have little kids, cool that's no big deal. You got 14yo boys or some shit, that is a VERY tight space when you include dog and gear, etc. You will need a big ass roof box. Drawback #2 is that you get 14mpg tops. That's okay, it's just $$$, it's got a big tank so range not really an issue. Oh, also, it's under powered as hell, to boot.

I wouldn't pay 20 for one, but for 10 or maybe 15 it'll get you anywhere and back. Slowly. 20+ is for collectors IMO.

He makes some good points above - I’ve owned a ‘97 that still is a strong runner but I’ve spent a lot of time the past couple of years going through random shit that one would expect for a rig over 25 years old.

But what is clean in your mind may not be clean in LC terms to those in the know. You have lots of Toyota experience but these trucks are not the same except for the solid axles that were shared with certain vintages of pick ups.

What kind of verified work has been done and how is the rust?
