Well according to his friend Lord Edward Cawthorpe the 4th it is STILL the preferred nomenclature. People just don't know how good they had it back then.

Anyone have thoughts on where to ski this weekend/next week? Looking at the forecast I was thinking Monterosa. Yes/no? Also, will my wife be bored out of her mind for 5 days if we stay in Gressoney-La-Trinité and she’s not skiing?

Everybody's gotta have parkas. I'm talking custom parkas. Two words: "client development." They see all of you out there cutting the powder in your matching Schweikart & Cokely parkas, you'll make an impression. You will thank me later.

what the snowflake history books don't say is how well they civilised that whole continent. Even gave them full time employment abroad.

I mean, you're not wrong. But I'm trying to limit it to sub-3 hour flights from Amsterdam.

I thought Alagna had a better vibe. With a couple of churches and some cool old buildings, it's good for walking. All of the villages are pretty isolated.

What does your wife like to do? If it's shopping, none of the villages in Monterosa ski will fit the bill. There's hikes up valley from Alagna and some refugios. Riding the lifts is gorgeous.

I'd skip monte rosa. Basically no base from the early season storms so no tree skiing and very little snow up high. If you come after the storm, it might work out.
There are other places which should get snow and have a base...predominantly in Switzerland.

What about Courmayeur maybe via the bus from Chamonix. Hedge your bets on South vs North and a decent town to hang out in. Easy from GVA

He is politically correct enough to refer to Zimbabwe as Rhodesia but that is only because he has an interest to work with Mugabe’s nephew.

I liked Chur. It's easy access to Arosa/Lenzerheide, Tschiertschen or Klosters in about an hour by train. Or the smaller area, Chur - Brambrüesch accessed by a tram right out of the edge of the city.

Lots to do between rambling around the town squares, checking out the Roman ruins, 2 hour spectacular day trip to St. Moritz (4 hour rt + time in town).

Another spot is Bad Gastein, 1.5 hour train ride from Salzburg. There's 2 thermal baths in the area and lots of good skiing. The town is an old spa town with a bunch of old hotels that are being revamped. The place definAtely has that film of old ski bum about it. https://www.hotelechobadgastein.com/ is a great deal and right on the flume.
If it's dumping in Gasteinertal, there's lots of tree skiing. If it clears, the upper area Sportgastein, will hold good snow. The cherry on the place is the train through the tunnel to Mallnitz/Ankogel which is on the South side of the Alpine ridge and has great skiing, plus a short taxi to Moeltaller Gletscher which affords a huDge backcountry line down to Sportgastein.

Deutsch mags. This summer I'm driving over to Polska via a week in Schladming riding my DH bike there. However thinking of dropping in on lake constance for a few days prior to Schladming, any preference as to which part to visit? or should we go schwarzwald instead?

I live in Constance. It's definitely the place to go. One of the few intact medieval City Centers(because bazs grandfather was scared to Hit Switzerland), loads of things to do and nice views of the alps.

perfect, we've got someone's spare room to crash in. what's your wife like at cooking? we're not fussy and eat most things as long as its home cooked, no preservative organic and grown in the back garden. Kids are really well behaved in bed by 1am-ish sometimes let them stay up later than that for a treat.

Why would Baz bomb his bank?

This is what we ended up doing. Somehow we lucked out and found really reasonable lodging right in town - just a fraction of the price of what I was seeing anywhere in CH. Hopefully the storm stays on track. Other than Vallee Blanche anyone have any must-do tours leaving from Courmayeur? Again, thanks for all the suggestions.

jealous, looks like you did well on timing and price.

just got done skiing 3 days zermat, 2 days murren. I'll save any long winded writeup on these places as you have all been there before. Shoutout to Buster for the murren rec what a wonderful spot. I could see how this place would be incredible when the snow is in and cold.

very low tide across the board but I have a new appreciation for groomers and gs skis.

    Have fun.
