I owned the prior gen R. Ended up selling it during the pandemic for what I originally paid for it. It was a fun car but driving it in Utah was a hassle due to unwanted attention. There's something about a small car that makes Utah drivers want to cut it off, pull out in front of, constantly get tailgated by minivans, and so on much more so than a nondescript CUV thing.

This is the last year VW will offer a 6 Speed, though, so lately I've been thinking about GTIs

    So what happened?
Rushed by a herd of hippo on the Serengeti?
Tumbled down a cliff while navigating Hell’s Revenge?
Backed into a light pole in the Backcountry parking lot?

That Golf R in 6MT looks like big fun.

Other than Mercedes, who went a bit overboard with the vinyl banner.

I think that's the idea. Pull the high trim models from dealer lots, a few exotics and a handful of prototypes from the mfgs.

Well, Mercedes is synonymous with opulence.

It's funny, I think most annual car shows are kind of like this one above. I grew up with my dad and I taking an annual trip to Detroit for the International Auto Show, which used to be a huge deal and saw the unveiling of so many cool cars; the Carrera GT, Viper, that weird 16 cylinder Caddy concept car...

Then when I took my kid to the Atlanta Auto Show I was super disappointed to see that it was exactly like the above show, bare, no real manufacturer presence, zero concept cars and a handful of exotics in a roped off area. It was kind of depressing for a car enthusiast.

In fact, the only two manufacturers that didn't look like they just moved a few cars from the dealer lot were Porsche and Mercedes Benz and I'm guessing that's just because they have their North American headquarters in town.

Manufacturers have largely scaled back on auto shows. Budgets made years ago with no room. Strikes. Porsche didn't even attend LA.

Yeah, I think you're right. It's just not how business is done anymore. What's interesting is reading that BMW and Mercedes pulled out of LA years before Porsche did last year. Porsche did however throw a year-long bash celebrating their 75th anniversary, held a big Rennsport Reunion and launched not one but 4 hypercar teams for IMSA/WEC, two Formula E teams and a bunch of other motorsport focused efforts - I guess that's how they intend to interface with their customers going forward. Totally fine by me, but I'll always miss going to a big auto show and seeing manufacturers pull out all the stops.

^^ Kinda like a craft beer fair, except where the distributors just bring cans and bottles of the beer they stock on the shelves and one or two breweries send a few shirts over so people look like they’re from there? Yeah, I’ve been to those.

At least you still get to drink beer in the park with a fake craft beer fair. Fake car shows don’t even have that.
    focus.

Not sure if you guys have heard of it, but there's this thing called "the internet." Most folks get their breaking car news there. By the time the auto show rolls around we've already seen the new Chevy Colorado from every conceivable angle. The only reason to go to the auto show is to sit in all the minivans in the span of an hour and a half, or to see if the upgrades to the new Sienna are worth trading yours in. The motorama has been gone for decades.

Yes. They travel from show to show.

What about the models in evening gowns and cocktail dresses on the rotating stage answering any and all questions about the new piece of steel behind them?

A guy at Solitude tried to start a fight b/c I pulled into the middle of a spot that was big enough for a full size truck but not for two cars. He thought I should have parked off to one side to make room even though it was late afternoon and people were leaving anyway. Each incident was petty and insignificant on its own, it was the frequency of randos wanting to interact that was annoying. A reddit thread on the phenomenon:

Sorry, that was directed at the Sprinter above your post, but I’m always down for tales of ski lot douchebaggery. Now that I have my kids in tow it’s easier to avoid.

Before good ol' gas engines go away I have to get a phat-cat luxobarge with velour pillow top seats.

It would be even better if it has a big garish hood ornament and opera windows.

She was a fast machine, she kept her motor clean
She was the best damn woman that I ever seen
She had the sightless eyes, telling me no lies
Knocking me out with those American thighs/boobs/smile/eyes.

    Damn

I thought the interior in my Toronado was pretty outrageous.

I always chuckled that they took the time to spell out.

It's a Buick; the target market doesn't have the eyesight to distinguish D from O, and D or R from P may be questionable.
