Wagon wheel bowl. Best lift assisted turns of the season.

There is good snow out there if you look in the right spots. A lot less sharky now

Zone under Funnel off the Cornice was choice today (and wasn't bad yesterday either). Nice little ski day at the Wood!

Happy 2024 Folks. Here's to a snowy and happy winter ahead.
It seems relevant that this afternoons NWS forecast shows a high likelihood of double what BA forecast this morning for tomorrow nights storm. BA calling for max of 6" at the crest. NWS now calling for 60-70% chance of 12" at the crest. Same likelihood of 4" in the Tahoe basin which says it is more east than they were thinking.

High elevation has been alot of fun. Settled soft snow, not sinking in and hitting much that isn't obvious.

Fun skiing today. 1" of fresh + wind loading + afternoon sun made for a few soft turns, and my skis are so old I don't mind rail sliding the logs and rocks.

Saw a bunch of good folks and made turns. It reminded me of a good spring day at Mad River Glen.
Good to run into ya'll briefly. Felt like returning home. Family plans got me up here Justin time so I did not need excuses to not to paddle out into a raging ocean.

Posting up for a KW report. Been here for 5 days and good turns warhead every day. The 1" snow storm kept snowing heavy all day with a total of 2". With that, I've been skiing knee deep pow, with no crust under it, in Pali Bowl, every day since. Still was finding fresh turns yesterday, but I think that is done for now, except for a few low angled turns to be found under cave rock. I've not been hitting any rain crust out in Pali on north facing slopes above 8500'.

Skiing has been great. Sure its very low tide, but runs off 10 have been buffed and are super fun to ride. Maybe its more fun, cause my 12 years pretty much only wants to lap 10 until tired and then take a lap in Pali down tot he car.

Fingers crossed for tonight and this weekend. They have started making more snow again, to fill the hole on Zach's and fill in the base areas. And I just realized that they do have one snowmaking gun over at the TC base. It's been blowing the past two nights.

All in all, KW has been plenty of fun. Thought of taking a day trip down to Mammoth for more variety, but we decided to just hang here, as we've been enjoying the offerings.

Looks like the surf will still be pumping when I get home at the end of the week...

Thanks. Raincrust was prominent at donner pass area. SAC noted it in their reporting from mt judah. Was everywhere at SB.

There was a soft supportable crust under things, but it rode well. Windblasted spots led to some slick skinning

Thanks. Interesting to note variability of that shallow crust. Also, seems like a bit more wind occurred at Carson pass compared to donner pass.

My wife and I are planning 2-3 days at Kirkwood & maybe 1 at Heavenly the last week of February. Never been to either. Pretty stoked to ski Kirkwood. Meeting my brother who has the epic pass so he can get us some of his buddy ticket's...
But I figured I'd ask here if anyone can hook us up w/ any vouchers for a better deal. Thanks

There is a house at KW called Chicken Feathers. You should stay there.

Dumping at 7800' right now. About a half inch on the wind exposed railing. Fingers crossed this keeps coming.

Today should be good. Reports from the summit sound promising. My week has been mellow since my almost 7 year old has skied with us every day. He's crushing it, but definitely isn't ready for any big hikes. I've been super impressed with his skiing, though. Proud dad stuff.

I haven't been in the back country yet, but I thought SB skied really well. Cold, moving/blowing snow made for nice chalky conditions and soft turns in the trees. My big kid is amped on all of the weird lines and stuff to be jumped off of. Lakeview is rough. The amount of rock embedded in the snow is brutal. All in all, OV is skiing the best of the summit spots right now, IMO. if they can get enough snow to build out the pond at Headwall it would be rad. Plenty of good snow up there to be skied.

I was just talking to a buddy at one of the boot shops. He hasn't skied at all yet. He was blown away when I told him that I thought the skiing was good right now. I think there's a lot of that sentiment going around. Ski racks are full of rentals, spoiled locals are staying home or riding their mountain bikes still.

Oh well..... I have definitely committed a pair of mid -fats to rock ski status this year, but I'm happy to be skiing and having a blast. The monster years come and go.

Who wants to take a trip to AK?

I’m glad conditions improved. My oldest and I explored pretty much the entire hill on Sunday, pony express through all of the nose zone through east face of Disney, including many of the trees areas, micro terrain collection spots, and gullies; and Mt Lincoln zone (chute 2, 2.5, Crowley’s fingers, Vanderbilt). Everything was dust on solid but edge-able raincrust or just raincrust with piles of new snow.

School is still out. Plan accordingly.
I decided to avoid the rope drop on wolverine (via the D Chutes etc I think) lest I wind up flattened like Wiley Coyote by faster skiers (everyone) .

Scored 2nd Funitel this morning at OV with my wife and two high school boys. It wasn't anything epic for sure but it was still fun to ski some freshies off Shirley. We did 8 runs and called it. Shirley didn't really get busy until after 5th run and even then line was moving fast. Weather models looking legit for the next few weeks for snow before a potential warm (eg R word) later this month. Let's hope that R part doesn't happen.

Kirkwood delivered the goods today. Shout out to Caltrans for omitting any grit on the hiway this morning, made for some exciting viewing as cars skidded off the roads.
