$teaux has 2-6 reported, pretty realistic. Skiing like more cuz it is so dense.

fun times hangin' with Peruvian and Doremite at the TeleColo film on Friday night; cheers guys!

Was part of the late arrival crew at the Bush on Saturday after a big night out on the town, but the snow was soft and bumps were fun for Day #1. Ripped a few laps on Sunday morning before/during the weather, honestly the groomers were a lot of fun with the warm temps and fresh groom; classic new england slop fest once the precip started falling but still good to be out.

My first ever venture thru the Mad Riv. Valley did not disappoint. Had dinner at the Blue Stone Saturday night; that place was fantastic. Overall feels good to be back in the swing of things; hoping last night/today is a net gain and we end up in good position moving forward.

Gave the wiods a try and wasn’t disappointed, but certainly still a lot of open streams and barely buried reef. This line was a-ok though.

Thanks! That is definitely the long term goal, gonna be a bit of work to brush off all the cobwebs as I haven’t *really* skied since before I was Ops Director there but I’m stoked to help build the teen ripper program hand-in-hand with my efforts on the tree skiing maintenance side. It’ll be great to focus on developing the stuff I really enjoy without going balls deep into the organizational shitshow I want absolutely nothing to do with.

Now I’ve got to find some reasonably priced heated socks or insoles though, my toes’ ability to stay warm is destroyed from the cold during the Ops tenure and I already know it’s going to be an issue.

Following up on my question from a month ago... I think I've narrowed the decision for the 23rd down to Belleayre or Plattekill.

Looks like Plattekill is scheduled to open this Saturday, anyone have a read on conditions over there? Are they opening 2 trails or most of the mountain?

Can get tickets for $70 at Platty and $94 at Belleayre.

    Which place is radder?

i’m predicting a huge dump for Plattekill on the 22nd. but even if it doesn’t snow again this winter it’s illegal for a mag to advise not to go to plattekill when in the catskills. snow or no snow, always a great time at plattekill.

^^ i met THIS rad dude at platts about 15 years ago.
and NO trails were open. we were greeted by lazlo (owner) and he posted pics of our skinning party on the website, and credited us with the season's first tracks.

a bunch of us returned days later and lazlo fired up the lift for two runs worth. so huge for me as my setup was very heavy!

fixed question for you so that you may answer your own question.
platts reported 10-12" today (altitude, altitude)
website promising good opening day conditions.

(belleayre likely radder crowd-size-wise too. in case you're into that)

a buddy of mine is gonna be playing guitar and singing at platts on 23rd as well.

Pretty sure today will be my single day high post count. Here are a couple Instagram videos and posts about the avalanche in Airplane gully. Note if you have been in a serious avalanche these videos are graphic and maybe hard to watch.

Wow! Pretty wild stuff. Crazy reading all the precautions they took before going for it, and really appreciate his post and transparency. I am pretty new at all this stuff and would love to hear what other signs to be looking for or what lessons should be learned from this. (Not trying to critique and trash them, but rather want to learn through this).

Some things they really got right that mitigated the situation. Clearly had first aid training as knew to apply a tourniquet. Were adequately prepared with bivy sacks and warm clothes to stay immobile for an extended period of time. They had ability to call for rescue.

Random thoughts that may or not help as you think about avalanche risk. The more we know, the more we realize we don’t know. Don’t use snowpack observations to downgrade an avalanche forecast risk, only to increase the risk level. Don’t become lulled by the times you were lucky into thinking you are smarter than the forecasters.

In terms of the specific event, early season thin snowpack is tough to assess. The tops of the ravines are the places most likely to harbor a dangerous slab. Rocks are often places of weakness in the snowpack. There were multiple reports of natural avalanches and at least one human triggered avalanche on Mount Washington on h days preceding their avalanche. Of all the red flags, that one is the highest.

Platty is *the* shit. Belle is just shit. High speed ho hum boring af except for the top 50’ of like 3 trails. I’d rather ski rocks and dirt at P tbh

You can never be totally sure and they weren't idiots. If they were unprepared that could have been worse. Or if he had been solo.
But yes never open closed terrain.
I have seen people do those first few turns on the convex rollover part while roped in, just in case. But I've done it plenty of times unroped.
I'm no expert but that part where it bulges out convex is the weak spot.
Bad luck. There is risk in doing stuff.
I hope that guy is ok in the long run.

Plattekill for all the reasons already cited. Unfortunately I’m supposed to be working on the 23rd but I may be there if I take a personal day.

There was wind events on and off for days before this event no? The avalanche report seems to say that eh? The thing about wind transport and slab development is there's plenty of inconsistency through the snowpack so a cut here and a pit there probably isn't telling you much with that kind of spacial variability. One thing you can be assure of if there's an area (especially as confined as this line that slid) that is loaded up with enough snow that the coverage looks good to ski with obvious scoured areas all around it's likely (or actually extremely obvious) been loaded by said wind events. that dude charged right into a very questionable spot and now his leg is all f-d up. It may never be quite the same and for what? some mediocre early season turns for the gram? Nah, this BS about them having good intel, making good decisions and yada yada is just that, BS. If there's anything people should be learning its to read the avalanche report then watch his slide footage so they can actually put the two together. All of the red flags were there, they may not be idiots but they definitely fucked up.

The attention from the powder mag article from this guys November shit snow skiing up there probably didn't help with his decision making process.

Plattekill is the shit man. It was my second favorite place to go ski after MRG my last two seasons out East in the early 90's. 93-94 being my last year out there was their best snow year ever. It's awesome when they have natural snow coverage. It's the soul cookie of the Catskills. I would love to get back there this season. I'm seriously jealous.
