When I first moved here and hit the Avalanche for some apre beers it was when I felt totally at home with the move, and then they up and closed it. It needs to open back up.

So Keystone was pretty fun yesterday, especially in the morning. It got way too crowded after lunch. Snow stayed firm but you could see how it had been refrozen from prev warm temps. I understand there are some more area openings today so hopefully traffic gets dispersed and also hopefully people will be able to enjoy fresh blown groomage. I would choose Loveland over peak 9 personally.

Wondering when basin will be able to get Len open. Looked at the cams this morning and couldn’t see any snow being blown so who knows. Would be nice to have t2b. More warm weather on the way until the chance of more snow late next week
Sorry I guess it's peak 8 that opened today. Anyway, Schoolmarm was a blast in spite of the heavy traffic. I taught on that run for 5 years - forgot how much fun it was. Beautiful weather. Beautiful views. Nice crew.
It's just great to be skiing again, that's all.![]()

Breck opening was the usual (well, usual for these days now that they don't try very hard anymore) 4oclock/springmeier bottleneck. Soft snow in the morning and a wee bit of ungroomed on the side to jump around on.
I'm going boating tomorrow. Probably roll the rubber up after that. Going to throw the snows in the back of the car for a change sometime soon. What's the rush, I can read radar.

Delivered a load of firewood to a buddies ski haus in the Ville. Snow line was about 11K and maybe 12-18" . The pups dug it.
That looks better than expected. Bike trails are still very rideable in my 'hood. My take is that I don't care when winter comes but I just want to time between bike riding and top to bottom skiing to me minimized.
That said, one of the better parts of the ski season is the terrain openings before The Jane gets beat to death. We are running the risk now of that being during the holidays. Needs about 75" to start to be good and 100" before tree skiing.
The summer road is plowed all the way to the Pioneer. Contractors are driving it everyday to work on replacing the lift. There is heavy equipment and cranes up there.
Got a last hurrah in the high country over the weekend... ticked off a hot lap on Engineer Mountain Trail (Coal Bank Pass, north of Durango) and it was dry as a popcorn fart. Packed snow on Pass Trail to get up there, but that's more north facing than EMT. Maybe the storms coming in this weekend will shut it down?
Shitty screen grab from a phone video for posterity.

Not me. I just want to ski. Finally got new boots, several years overdue. OMG, 90 flex feels firm, my old boots were completely soggy. Is it "new lease on life" or "new lease of life"? I say the former...
I wonder if anyone here is skiing Copper today. There's a fancy new lodge up there, will check it out tomorrow.

Might check copper out Wednesday afternoon. Ready for the colder weather and snow things.
Picked up some used stance 96s and am excited to have a ski that can carve well.
Good to hear; I'm probably heading to copper tomorrow (Tue).

Does mammoth have multiple lifts going to one trail or something like how does that happen?
Arapahoe basin day #3 for me today. Pretty much groundhogs day, but today I took the board out for the first time in two years. It was fun, but those late day ice patches in flat light really sneak up on you. Good practice. "You ain't the shit if you can't ski the shit" is what my FIL says.

Some incredible work by the SAR team to rescue this extremely fortunate individual who wasn't crisp with the decision making.
https://www.facebook.com/CCSARN/post...aDrDEBHxfS2X1l
At approximately 7:00pm 11/08/2023 CCSAR-N was paged for a hiker in distress who had bushwacked to summit a 13’er earlier in the day. When inclement weather moved in the hiker found themself unprepared; out of water, with no food, wearing only a cotton hoodie and no way to warm themself. With darkness approaching and hypothermia setting in the individual decided, rather than take the same way down the best plan was to bail down an avalanche chute to try to get to a road. The subject did have a phone; however, SAR was unable to obtain GPS information for the subject from this device and all the subject could tell SAR about their location was that they were in an avalanche chute east of Cottonwood Lake. The subject was advised to keep moving in a downward direction.
Approximately 25 SAR members from CCSAR-N and CCSAR-S were deployed into the field to search for the subject during a severe snow storm. While another 5+ members conducted Incident Command functions at the CCSAR-N bay. Several Avalanche chutes were searched from the bottom up, with one searched from the top down due to steepness, deadfall and slippery condition.
At approximately 12:42am the team descending into the gully from the ridge, in approx. 6-8 inches of new snow located what appeared to be footprints. This team continued to follow the footprints until they came upon an unusual looking rock at approximately 2am. Upon further investigation it was determined it was not a rock but the subject sitting upright in a fetal position covered in snow. The subject was assessed and found to be alive but very hypothermic.
The teams spent approximately 3 hours warming the subject at their location prior to beginning the long, steep, arduous extraction over deadfall down the steep gully. The subject was located at 2am and the extraction began at 5:00am. Ropes were used to lower the subject one section at a time. At approximately 6:15am the subject notified the teams they felt like they could assist with the rescue by walking. The subject then walked out with assistance and was to an ambulance for evaluation by 7:00am.
CCSAR-N and CCSAR-S would like to remind everyone that the 10 essentials are ‘Essential’ for a reason. While you may not plan to be out in inclement weather the 10 essentials are essential in helping to keep you alive. (A list of the 10 essentials will be posted below in the comments.) It is also always a good idea to look up the weather before your hike and prepare accordingly.
SAR would also like to address communication devices, as they are not all the same. Please verify with your carrier if the device you plan to use as your emergency back up is GPS capable and IF this information can be provided quickly to first responders. While SAR does not endorse any particular GPS capable device we do not recommend you rely on a cell phone, as coverage does not exist everywhere. CCSAR-N does recommend a GPS device with an SOS function and two-way communication abilities.
