Pretty sure all the roads are still paved curvy and slow. When I did a sales route from ROC to and
through the Daks it'd be two overnights. In winter I'd XC ski at night after work and summer I'd fish. There was a cheap motel outside of Loon Lake that had a payphone in the parking lot and if you turned the UHF knob on the TV to just the right spot you could see and hear porn through the static on the screen. Probably gone now.

What a great ride that is other than the thoroughly worn out towns along the way. Sometimes it seems that the overly heavy handed land management in the 'daks over the last century has economically ruined the region. The 'you can drive around the boundary and look in or you can enter and walk but heaven forbid you want to use a trail not specifically designated as appropriate for humans and don't even think of saying the word bicycle or backcountry camping' attitude sucks. On to the roads, over the last few years we must've spent boatloads of $$ and now, for the most part, the roads are far better quality pavement than places where we collect lots of gas taxes. That made it kind of relaxing. Too bad the clouds never lifted more than a few hundred feet off the valley floors, I couldn't see much most of the way. Guess I gotta do it again

Boy, off season up there is really off. It was amazing how few businesses were open including two that I drove hours out of the way for. The primary target lost their last bike shop employee over the weekend and they decided to close until April but didn't announce it, just stuck a note on the door. Prime 21st century 'daks communication I figured lunch in Tupper Lake would be easy, nope. It's a good thing there's Stewart's everywhere so you can get decent hot coffee and fresh sandwiches that aren't terrible.

No meat, the bike shop guy there had to work his day job so I didn't make it to Croghan.

@huck Mountainman. Something struck me as it may have been a while ago not recent because the place looks buttoned up not just closed for a while. P&P is winter hours so closed T/W, my dumb ass wasn't paying attention. That looks like kind of a nice little shop. Inlet is a decent looking town, better kept than most at least.

Mountainman is in the midst of being sold to a new owner I believe. They supposedly had a big inventory reduction sale on their paddling stuff last month.

Thanks brownski, wish I'd known that. I hate when I drop the ball and sorta waste a really long day in the car. P&P would've been just a bonus because it was along the way.

Yo m27 here's that new Tracker you've been looking for. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace...ibextid=dXMIcH I better see you driving this soon. Lemme know and I'll find a roof rack so you don't have to figure out how to get skis inside.

This year’s Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree hails from………

    Vestal, NY!

Upstates or Southern Tier? Just off the Southern Tier Expressway, Rt 17 or I-86? You decide!

We have been over this. There's upstate and there's NYC+ up to about Rt 6 over to Port Jervis. Southern Tier is a region within upstate. Southern Tier can get released from Upstate about the same time that the North Country gets released from it.

Here’s a question. What region should Catamount be included in? NYSB has a guide/directory and Catamount is included with what Harvey used to call “downstate” areas and at some point changed to “ski areas near NYC”. It puts Catamount with Mount Peter, ThunderRidge and Holiday rather than the Catskill resorts. It’s closer in size and vert- and geographically- to the Catskills. It’s actually on the same road as Windham- just east of the river on the Mass border…

What do we think? Is this correct?

Well it's firmly in the Taconics bordering on the Berks. I wouldn't even sort of consider it downstate, it bears almost no resemblance to the others in the region. Shit, they have single trails with as much acreage as a few of the smaller areas even have.
