We get the occasional big dump, but most of the winter is a few inches at a time which turns icy. Good ol east coast!
I run studded duratracs so no help with those two tires, as for noise they aren’t that bad to deal with. I don’t really notice them, and I’d rather deal with a little noise then slide around all the time. I usually have 500 or so pounds in my truck bed too. And it will go anywhere.

    Paging 3PinGrin!
Or just PM him for deets.

I’m on the studless Hakkas so I can’t answer your question.

Do you have 2 sets or are the studs removable and replaceable for changing seasons somehow? That would be ideal. I see a lot of the town pickup trucks use duratracs, and I’ve always heard good things about them except they can be hard to balance I guess

Debating on either Blizzaks or studded Hakas. I’ve read quite a bit about how loud the studded tires are,I’ve never owned a pair ( or any dedicated winter tire , but can they really be louder than KO2s with 20k on them? Anyone run either of these 2 on a tundra? Thinking the studs might be overkill, but I do live on a steep road and would always have to use 4wd with the KO2s going up, and I would creep down the hill in first gear when it was snowy or icy.

The other option I was looking at was studding some general grabber AT…

I guess I’m all done white knuckling around with all terrain tires. Any input or experience would be appreciated
The Hakka LT3 isn’t bad noise wise. The newer versions are designed with a cushioning system under the stud so they retract more on hard pavement.

I don't have my LT3s on the truck yet (just got them mounted on rims and promptly left the county for a work trip), but the LT2s they're replacing aren't much, if any, worse for noise than my old summer tires were after 20k or so (Radar Renegade AT/5, price point AT that didn't like packed snow much). When the AT tires were relatively new, there was a more noticable difference.

It probably helps that I have the windows down a lot less when the winter tires are on.

I got six winters out of the LT2s (I don't drive much, either--10-12k/yr) and they're around 50% tread. Even with that age and mileage on them, they did pretty darn well last winter (only got stuck once, and that was 100% pilot error).

Great info guys, I appreciate it. I’m sure this info is probably buried in this thread somewhere, but this saved me hours of scrolling through this thread

Just chatted with tire rack customer service. You can stud the Duratracs and remove the studs one time, but you can’t put the studs back in a second or third time…

I have two sets of wheels and tires. Nitto ridge grapplers 37x12.5r20 for the summer and 325/65r18 studded duratrac for winter

Of course it used to be the other way around not that long ago. Ha

I havethose on my GX460. I have about 20k miles on them. Noise level is very acceptable. Dry pavement is acceptable but I definitely have to take it easier in the curves at speed. But in the snow they were excellent. Drove them several times in heavy snow storms in the sierra Nevada.

Anyone looked at the Falken Rubitrek? Was a cheaper alternative to Wildpeaks, but now it seems like it is about the same price. Slightly better road performance than Wildpeaks, but still winter rated.

They're not. Around town they sound like a studded tire. On the highway, my KO's are louder.

And for clarity KO is my 3 season tire, I switch to my studded Hak's Dec 1. Yes it's worth it, quite a noticeable improvement on winter handling.

I will say, that as the studs wear, the gap in handling characteristics does shrink by a good deal.

    Removing studs...why would you?

And that would be a helluva job, if even possible.

I did on a set. Came off winter and didn’t want to buy new summer tires, winters wouldn’t go another one. Just had thing 2, new business, times were tight. Took me about 1.5 hrs and a sixer. Pretty easy with a screwdriver.

3rd winter with studless Hakka lt3 on the Tundra. I drive the road to the mountain every day and they’ve been great. I’m down to about 50% tread so this is probably the last winter they’ll get. I will most likely get another set. They’re not a loud tire at all. AT summer tires are just as loud.

Don't you guys listen to music? I've never considered my tire volume an issue.

Why would you waste a sixer and likely some free miles on shot tires to bother pulling them. The studs were probably pin heads at that point. Or is dry weather traction on beat truck tires really necessary?

Maybe it's a matter of trying not to get busted for out of season studs in one of the places that actually enforces equipment laws?

Inspection states and emission states and tire states are out of my realm.

    I get it.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

I say that tongue in cheek. I can be a thrifty mofo. Rarely cheap tho.

Guy I know says this is very common. End of winter, winter tread played out, and people want to just run out the tire before next season, so they ask to have the studs pulled. It's actually very easy to pop them out. He said easier to pull them than using a stud gun to put them in.

Once the tires are worn past legit snow duty, I’m sure it’s a lot more pleasant to de-stud by hand than to hear the “PING!!!” of them shooting into your wheelwell at 70 mph on the interstate. But that’s just me [emoji23]

Montana and Maine, among other states, have places you can see the stars and seasonal limitations on studs. Granted, I think you'd have to piss off a cop before he looked at your tires to get cited for that in Montana, or in most of Maine.

Pretty much this. You have to be pulled over for something else before getting cited for running studs out of season. Cop might still just let you off with a warning.
