How do I motivate myself to do stuff?
Well Stuck, I recommend getting in your car, and while driving, think of all the most frustrating elements of your life, and scream as loud as you can until you are in tears. Then break down and cry (you might want to pull over for this), lamenting the mess your life is, and ask God for help. Some would recommend psychiatrist and antidepressants, but unless you unburden yourself of the weight of compressed strata of emotions, the clinical route won't work, as the only benefit of talk therapy is reaching the "breakthrough" moments when your emotions can move, and start to open space for life to enter that which was dying inside you. The rolling-sound-proof-booth method is a lot cheaper way of unsettling the neural calcification, that leads depressed people into ever deeper dysfunction, than paying a shrink to ask you how you feel.
RIP Greg Seitz.
I learned today that Greg was killed recently in a logging accident. He was a genuinely good-hearted person, and one of the elite skiers, both tele and alpine, at Snowbowl. He was a luminary among the community of diehards, and will be sorely missed by many. It sucks to know he's gone. He was a friend.

Hi
- Blog alert -
Looks like I’ll be moving back to my home state… got a job offer in Missoula. Simultaneously stoked and gripped. Life roots in WA got deeper than I expected upon moving west 12 years ago… time sneaks up.
Wife and I are engineers, she’s environmental and I’m mechanical. Daughters are 7 and 4. We are avid outdoorspeople and enjoy skiing, cycling, camping, and boating.
The likely move window is Thanksgiving week, so I don’t have a lot of time to figure out a whole raft of shit. We’ve never lived in Missoula. If any of you homies have a contact to pass along or an opinion to share regarding the following, I’d greatly appreciate it.
Housing. Anyone have a 3 bed place available Nov 1 or know someone looking for tenants?
We’re gonna rent out our house in WA for TBD duration to offset housing costs. Mortgage is 3% and I don’t think it makes sense to sell right now. But without selling we can’t quite afford to buy a house, so we’ll rent for a year or whatever to get a feel for the town and watch the market. It’s been more than a decade since renting and I’m rusty af. Rental agencies aren’t my favorite thing but does anyone have opinions on the outfits in town? Any stand out as shitty or above average?
Schools. The school system in the valley is pretty highly regarded, based on chats with friends/fam based in other MT towns. But do any of the individual schools stand out as better or worse? Immediate gaze is upon the elementaries but opinions on middle/high are welcome, too.
Neighborhoods. Already got one friend’s vote to avoid the zone between Russell and Reserve but maybe that’s overblown(?). Preferred hoods from examining maps include the rattlesnake (duh/$) and rose park, lewis & clark, and the u district. Not interested in the west side stuff currently. Opinions?
Job for wife. Current gig isn’t mobile unfortunately. Lady has a PE in environmental engineering and has extensive experience with regulation/compliance and is coming up to speed with the remediation/PM side. Anyone got a lead or tips for a mid-career enviro?
Gotdamn I’m excited to build a new life but feeling pretty daunted at the moment. Hope to ski with some of you soon.
TL;DR
We’re coming to ruin yer town, plz help with basics
Wow. Big news man. I'm in East Missoula right now at my buddy's house. He is a lifelong Missoulian and owns Main Street Realty, office is just down the street from the Mo Club. He's a good source of local info and has some good agents, like Gia and Jenn. Tylor@mainstreetmissoula.com
The folks I spent time with there in the mid 70s are still there and Doc is an RE agent: https://www.linkedin.com/in/patrick-halsell-69034547/ .
Best of luck, you will be missed at Alpy.

I lived in Missoula for 20 years. Great town to land in, congrats. Every conceivable outdoor activity at your doorstep.

Congrats! Similar story, pulled up roots from Western WA a year and a half ago for Missoula. WA native that spent most of the 90’s in Bozeman at MSU and and early career before returning to WA. After that time in Bozeman I never would have thought I’d end up in Missoula but so happy with where we landed.
New enough here that I can’t be of much help on the rental front, other than you are on the right track for neighborhoods, add lower Pattee Canyon also, nice access to trails while still close to downtown. We looked at all of those while house hunting. Eastern side of Missoula neighborhoods let you completely avoid the reserve street traffic and big box cluster other than specific Costco visits or kids sports at Fort Missoula which is an awesome facility. The walk/bikeability of the neighborhoods near downtown is awesome. Western neighborhoods are auto dependent.
Happy with schools so far, with now elementary and middle school daughters. We are Rattlesnake elem, Washington Middle and Hellgate high track, though all high schools seem well regarded. Wife’s a teacher so could probably help with more specifics.
Snowbowl is legit fun. Biggest thing I miss is king laps for avy safe escape from the lifts.
Good luck with the move. Feel free to pm with ?.
TL;DR: we came to ruin the town last year and found a welcoming community of wonderful people.

Assume you want to rent a house. If not, lots of apartment rentals coming online west of Reserve (England and George Elmer). That elementary school is good, probably going to get crowded. With all of the building to the west, I expect Big Sky High School to become very crowded in the next 10yrs.
If I were to do it again, I'd look for centrally located fixer upper , south of the river, University to Orange or Russell. The downtown and river areas just offer so much to do if within walking or short rides. That also makes you central to mtb rides from the house.

Well, currently over 90% of families in Missoula don't have the income sufficient to buy a house at the average asking price, and property is being bought up by out of state money, sometimes creating bidding wars where property is selling for cash, and above asking prices, which is in turn driving up property tax assessments; subsequently, rents have been rising sharply.
The citizenry of Montana has elected a cast of legislators, which have shifted the property tax burden sharply from corporations and big business to residential land owners.
So, not the best housing climate to be looking to move back, but you'll be glad to know, that I mentioned specifically, in my most recent comments to the City Council, the scenario of children of Missoula returning to the town the grew up in, and not being able to find housing. They didn't seem to be terribly concerned.
Not sure if this is in your wife's wheelhouse but it does say they have positions available in Missoula. And I know the state is having a very hard time finding qualified candidates these days.

It's sadly becoming a community for the monied which carries, feeds and promotes the attitude in Rasputin's last sentence. I wish I was just being sarcastic with that statement
I want to qualify that not all on the council are blithe in their disregard for the need for affordable housing (there are at least a couple conscience driven councilors), but the dispensations to achieve that end don't tend to carry, while the pet projects of developers for "market rate housing" (which means mean income levels can't afford to live there) sail through with a metaphoric spank on the tush, like a halfback that just danced into the end zone.
PM sent but this is generally correct on housing/schools for active families, if you can find a place (not an easy task). Also add the "Farviews" neighborhood per the MLS which is the bottom of Pattee Canyon and the immediately adjoining South Hills, also in Lewis and Clark elementary school zone.
I mean, Carlino is a complete lunatic so he is probably the "not all" you are referring to, but I agree that everyone else is totally "blithe" in their disregard for affordable housing, which is why Missoula is incredibly up-zoned in "less desirable" neighborhoods (i.e. where poorer people live) but remains staunchly single-family* in all of the most desirable neighborhoods.
*Per state law, as of 1/1/24, you can now build larger ADU's as a matter of right on every single-family lot and also build duplexes on every single-family lot, but the latter would require a teardown first in most instances. And for what it's worth, we have a house in one of those neighborhoods zoned single-family and I think it's total bullshit that it remains so zoned.

Looks like there’s trouble in paradise…
I laughed at this:
"The Missoulian has requested the document through the Freedom of Information Act, but the Forest Service must first review the document and redact any proprietary business information before releasing it. "
Pretty sure nobody wants any Snowbowl "proprietary business information" unless it is from the last run in.
Over/Under for when Snowbowl opens this year. I'll set the line at Friday 1/12/24.
I wonder how many people took them up on their plea to prepay for summer improvements (or whatever that was about).
Who has the inside info on what is being required for the fixes in order for the FS to approve the opening? TV news tonight said that an independent engineer has to sign off on the lifts. That seems like a big hurdle for Snowbowl to jump over.
