1000+ racers on narrow, public roads seems like a terrible idea. I’ve never done Rasputitsa but I know its a big name race that has become very competitive with more racers every year.

Racers are pushing hard and fast and can easily forget that there’s still traffic on the course.

Between this tragedy and the racer who was killed at the Overland last year, I bet there won’t be many more gravel races in VT anytime soon.

Umm no, see the greedy promoter’s that I mentioned. They want our money. 1,000 riders at $135-$150 is huge bank.

Yeah they’re greedy as fuck and it wont stop them.

You don’t think little towns like Burke will try to crack down on these events after this poor guy?

Yeah, you might be right. It’s way too much for these small towns to deal with.

So how did it get to 18lbs? Frame is sub 1000g? Dura Ace is stupid light (even with disc).

It’s so sad that this man was killed during Rasputitsa. That being said, gravel racing is gross. I don’t see any difference between it and road racing except it’s got a bit more wild west atmosphere. As soon as there are numbered bibs and a clock, the ride changes.

I really hope that rides that support the enjoyment of pedaling through beautiful places with difficult sections, encourage community over competition, and a come as you are ethic are the future of group gravel events.

I posted a couple pages back asking for recommendations for a carbon wheelset.

I ended up finding a Roval Terra CL set ($1700 MSRP) for $1184 including tax.

Should be a 600 gram savings over my existing aluminum set.

I'm stoked. It'll be the first carbon wheels I've had on any bike ever.

And I really hope that gravel continues to grow so that people always have the option to either just go for a ride in the woods or rip it up competing against their friends. More options = great!

People who don’t have a competitive bone in their bodies are funny, road/gravel racing is gross? Come on man, you’re scared to be seen in public wearing bib-shorts. Take one

Nice deal! I've used that same wheelset for a couple of years now and have zero complaints. Mind sharing where you picked yours up at that price? I'm tempted to grab a second set for my road tires.

"Come as you are" as long as you don't even think about racing, in which case we'll kick you out of our event?

I don’t wear bibs. I’m not shaped such that I need to avoid waistbands. Bibs are like wearing this swimsuit.

Without a bib number or a clock running there is no “race”. Whoever finishes first just has to wait for others before the cooler of beer gets opened.

Got two fantastic rides in out in the Gorge this week. A week of rain followed by 80+ degree days meant the flowers are going absolutely apeshit. I've never experienced breathing in air that was so heavy with the smell of wild flowers. Absolutely intoxicating. The OMTM crew puts together some really all time routes.

That guy Dustin Klein on utoob documents some OMTM rides. They look fantastic.

I got in 60 miles over the weekend on some rides with Mrs P. Nothing aggressive but quick and fun on early season legs.

It's still gravel if you're on a gravel bike on pavement, no?

Last weekend when the GTNP roads were open to bikes but not cars. We went went for a ride with three neighbors and ran into two more while out riding-

My parents recently got gravel bikes, so I've been showing them around. Here's my mom on an after work ride last week-

NPS roads in the closed to cars open to bikes sweet spots is definitely one of the highlights of spring. I've ridden the road to Sunrise at Rainer. Haven't yet made it to Crater Lake or North Cascades Highway for their windows yet.

    Gravel/Bikepack nerds enter...

Suggestions for my kiddo as HS graduation gift. Our budget isn’t robust. It will likely end up at college (humboldt state). He’s at least 6’2”, lean, and long legs. Sierra foothills: road, gravel, dirt, and likely non-tech trails. He’d use it frequently to access the river via dirt in the steep canyon that we live in and to access town, errands, and more freedom of movement (no driver’s license). Our roads are steep. He hasn’t ridden a bike much over the past few years, so this is sort of his re-entry for him into riding more (but he’s been riding a bike since he was 3). We also live in bikepacking area, which is an interest for he and some of his friends (they’ve backpacked together). He wants flat bars and I’m thinking steel frame. I was also thinking mechanical over hydro brakes. 1x or 2x? Thoughts and suggestions? There are only a few shops in our local towns and only one that really markets itself for gravel bikes.
