    Dozens of times.

If you had been to the top of Pali in recent years, you would have recognized that expression from the sign there.

I think he was referring to the center of the Basin universe, not universal dominance, but I could be wrong.

Haha! I was just poking a bit of fun (*sarcasm) how young Jackson skiers often feel that the Vill is the center of the universe. I should know, I was one of them 25 years ago .

Note: That was me making fun of myself in case it was missed as well.

    Meh.

I have been to Jackson plenty of times. I actually prefer skiing at A-Basin for a variety of reasons including the low-key nature and the consistent snow quality.

SGs are getting all the hype, but there are many other hike back zones worth visiting, like Bald Spot and Janitors.
I need to check out Crags and Lower Gauthier this year.

Top of Pali is nicknamed the center of the universe due to it's proximity to a major gravitational vortex. That's why there is no lodging there. No developer can insure a project that close to a vortex. It's science.

I haven’t tried Bald Spot or Lower Gauthier. Going to have to put them on the list this season.

Beavers lift opened today. Just Davis and Cornice run. Troller I talked to said the plan was to open Len Face w/ access from top of Beavers, but it had not opened yet when I left at 1:30.

Pali is so ready to go. I'm sure they are allocating resources to Len Face and Beavers right now, but man, riding the lift by that fully loaded Spine is kinda tough. Hopefully things kick into gear soon around there. Weird year...

Sounds sound to me. We know a thing or two about vortexes round here in Northern Arizona. I'd like to visit and investigate the Pali vortesy. Anyone care to let me try and follow if I pass through?

Oh man, these are sick. I haven't skied A-Basin since the late 90's. A lot has changed since then.

I’ve always kicked myself for not hitting the beavers when I lived there, never made it that far over. Wouldn’t be the same with the lift in there now. Was actually really bummed to hear they were building it. That whole zone is prime but I imagine it gets skied out fast as fuck now. The lift line pics I’ve been seeing from the basin are disgusting. I still get out to tour summit in the springtime but haven’t rode a lift there in years. Seems like the crowding is out of control.

Yes and no. Early season weekends with folks using up their Ikon days (suckers) can get busy, but that's fine. After the Basin left the Epic pass things cooled down, especially mid-week. I rarely wait in a line (with midweek days off work).

It's still easy to find less skied areas in the Beavers. I find the weather to be more of the limiting factor. Pretty early spring a lot of the area starts to undergo significant melt freeze cycles and becomes less fun rather quickly.

yeah this. beavers isn't what it was but the expansion was inevitable and the thinning they have done back there makes for some pretty sweet tree cruising. The area also really helps spread some people out across the rest of the mountain. The only days I really waited in lines last season were saturdays where I knew what I was getting myself into, primarily ski weekdays and don't really have to deal with crowds.

Beavers and Gullies are complete shit compared to the old version. There are benefits to the new scenario, but I'm sure glad I got 20+ years of skiing them the old way. Oh well. Guess I'll just go drown my sorrows over some Peroni and a Charcuterie plate at PHQ. Guess I'm glad the place is self sustainable now w/o Epic. Good job Al.

    Relevant...

In 2019, the ski area was infuriating its skiers. The resort had been on the Epic Pass for a decade. Mr. Ryan said that before that, the ski area “might see four to five days per year where the parking lots filled. When A Basin was on Epic, that happened all the time.”

Alan Henceroth, the resort’s chief operating officer, concurred. “The most angry skier you’ll ever encounter is the one who shows up and is told there is no parking spot for you,” he said. “And we were doing that on a regular basis.”

Mr. Henceroth faced a conundrum. “Business was fantastic — we were having record years — but we thought the brand was really being damaged and the foundation of our business was crumbling.”

So Mr. Henceroth did something almost unheard-of for an American business: He turned away customers. Arapahoe Basin left the Epic Pass in 2019 and signed on with the Ikon Pass and Mountain Collective, which cap the number of days that skiers can go to Arapahoe. The ski area also limited sales of season passes and lift tickets.

The result: In early 2020, Arapahoe Basin had 69 percent fewer skiers than a year earlier when it was on the Epic Pass. “The experience is way up. The skier days are way down,” Mr. Henceroth proudly announced on the ski area’s blog.

And he said later, “It was a record year for us financially.”

I don’t get the fascination with the beavers. More often than not, it’s just 25-30-deg bumped out trees.

The gullies on the other hand house some of the most premier in bounds skiing in the lower 48. I get that people were disappointed it’s in bounds, but skiing those lines on a pow day with avy control is sublime.

I'm a fan - the Beavers have great flow, especially the Dog Trees. Excellent work with the saws in there.
SGs - Not many ski areas are adding that caliber of expert terrain and reducing skier days, it's a hell of a combo.

I'm not fascinated by the Beavers, but 25-30 degree trees are my bread and butter. I do love steeper and often ski it, but I don't like being 100% on top of my shit all day, so trees like that -- which I can ski all day -- keep me happy (it's why I like Mary Jane so much).

At lease that bag of dicks won't spoil if it's frozen. Are there still microwaves in the cafeteria to warm them up for when you want a snack?

    Punch it, Chewie.

    Damn he seems cool.
