That's actually one of my pet peeves too... If you're going to use jargon, fucking use the right words.

As someone with a substantial amount of education in soil science I can appreciate this post, but on the other hand it's best not to get hung up on colloquial definitions of words that have separate, technical definitions. When someone uses the word "significant" I don't launch into a discussion of p-values and statistical populations, nor do I lecture people about how botanically-speaking many vegetables are actually fruits and many fruits are not actual fruits.

You'd be much nerdier if you did, and unlike skrd, I like to nerd.

Not to mention the beloved strawberry!
It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

Don't get me wrong. I totally approve of such nerdery.

    But it *is* nerdery.

I’ve mostly been hiking this year and a big takeaway is that a significant number of mountain bikers are loamy assholes. People ride significantly beyond their ability to reasonably slow down and have no consideration for other loam users. If it weren’t for the fact that the a significant majority of groms I come across are super considerate, I might be concerned for our future loam. Selfishly, I also like that they’re the only ones that heed the advice of a loamy old hiker when I tell them they should reverse direction cause the loop is significantly better that way. Adults nod and smile unsignificantly like I’m a senile hobo and continue pushing their bikes up the good loamy DH.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

You prefer hardpack groomers over fresh powder too, huh? Weirdo.

It truly is a wonderful thing to ride a loamer in peak condition where you sink and then catch into every turn, and you can feel the loam flying up and hitting you when braking or turning. So much control, and such a plush playful ride. I miss it Fall is coming though....

I'd have to dig around a while to find that bit in my shop. I definitely know where my drill bits are though. I'd probably just drill those fucking things out and replace with normal bolts.

I too have a drill, this is the rant thread as pointed out above! Why the fuck do I need security on my chainring bolts?? Besides think there's a 2 year warranty on SLX stuff, which this is well w/in, may use as opportunity to warranty.

T-handle, L-handle, 1/4” drive, 3/8” drive, 1/4” bit and a few sizes in screwdriver handle.

Oh wait is this not the Tool Time thread?

Just for an update, it's quite nice having a next door neighbor who'd be not too far behind Dee and Gunder w/ tools. Though in a broader life sense vs the crazy bike specific collection you guys have.

SLX chainring is held onto the spider by a security Torx T15 and took all of 30 seconds with the right tool, but I have 0 reason to own.

last month my SRAM gear changer started falling off the bar in the p-lot before a ride and suprise all the bolts in the cockpit area I assumed were allen screws are now actualy torx on the SRAM product, fortunately I was able to borrow the right torx but you probably wana check what uses torx on your bike & get your self a multi tool with the right torx bits and its more than you think

Look at the positive side of things here: nobody's going to steal that chainring while you leave your bike unattended for 30 seconds. Or 2 hours.

I'd love to hear the thinking behind using that kind of bolt for a chainring...
