    Numb Junk

Im not certain if this is just part of getting old, or if I need a new saddle, but recently my junk has been going numb on long climbs.

What’s the solution? Is this normal?

Massage it while you are riding, the ladies love that.

Fuss with saddle angle to start. Try going more nose down. If that doesn't work, try some different saddles.

My buddy who does some bike fitting told me that saddles that are round on top of the nose will put pressure there and cause numbness so look for a saddle with a flat nose.

I struggled with getting a saddle that didn't make me go numb for years. Tried many, many different ones, in a variety of widths. I went to 2 shops to measure my sit bones and tried measuring at home with cardboard. In the end what worked was using WTB's wrist measurement, which gave me a narrower value, an Ergon SM Enduro saddle, set dead level. I've had days where I'm on the bike for like 8 hours with no numbness... some discomfort yea, but no more numbness.

I've read that too much cushion can restrict blood flow and cause numbness, likewise too wide will also. To narrow just wedges it up your crack and applies pressure from the side.

I'd suggest getting a couple of cheap (steel rail) saddles in a variety of widths, and try them all set dead level. See which feels best. Then fine tune the angle a bit (no more than like 1-2 degrees).

This is what I've started doing, both for numbness and to stretch my back a bit. Anywhere on a long climb where the trail gets flat for a second I stand and stretch forward.

I used to be a Salle Italia buffalo guy. Training for more distance I bought one Ergon seat. I now have them on every bike and trainer. Their sizing is counter intuitive. I’m 6’ and fat and I take a small/ med. It is possible with patience to try a few saddles relatively economically by buying take offs to find the one that works for you.

Went through this 4 years ago. Everyone is different (and you are special). For me the solution was a Brooks C15 carved: https://www.brooksengland.com/en_us/c15-carved.html

I tried it out of desperation since I had carved leather Brookses on my road and town bikes. Haven't looked back.

Has anyone ever tried an SQLab (in the right size) and decided against it?

Good deal. I was riding mine the other day and remarking on how amazingly better it was and I almost started to question whether XXXer was right, because somehow SQlabs seems to sneak out of that part of the chat. IDK if there's more confirmation bias or they really are a little better, but there has to be someone who hates them if they're really gonna work this well for some of us.

Anyone have any insight on numb hands? Generally only on my road bike, but also generally every time I ride it. Also potentially saddle related?
The older I get, the faster I was.

Try different things maybe saddle position thro's your weight on your hands ?

I had been running the saddle nose high then i heard you should run it flat so i tried that, then I went back to nose high which felt better, also a road coach told me I had a better seat on the bike with the nose high

    but again thats just me

The really long square nose was the biggest dealbreaker for me. I found it catching on my shorts all the time, and didn't like it smacking against the insides of my legs. I didn't find the wobble adjustment to do anything for me (positive or negative), and don't like saddles with whale tales.

Besides the Ergon SM Enduro, I get along pretty well with the Silverado.

The different thing about the SQLabs is that it's intended to provide two distinct positions, one forward and one back. On the topic of numbness, I found an in-between spot that was bad for that and had to do some fore-aft adjustment to get where my sit bones were supporting me instead of landing forward at the indentation. Just FYI in case anyone tries one for this purpose.

I have an SQLabs that I really want to like. The shape is great, nice support for climbing, but I have pressure points under my sit bones. I measured and remeasured and it’s the right size, but it almost feels too wide.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

Pressure under the sit bones is how I know there won't be any numbness on that seat. There's more to fit, of course. Like the shape of your bones may mean they need a narrower saddle than their measured width indicates?

Weird. I feel like my tighter shorts make it worse?

Stright up doesn’t work for me. Off to the side, just a little up.

I Switched to a specialized power comp saddle w/cutout in the middle and its a game changer for me. No pressure anymore in between sit bones, fairly cheap and may be worth a try for ya-
