you are right.

both swiss water process (SWP) and mountain water process (MWP) only use water. because caffeine is water soluble, there aren't any harsh chemicals. SWP and MWP account for like 99% of high quality decafs out there.

even decafs that use a solvent aren't necessarily bad for you, but i still prefer SWP and MWP.

Not sure what the commercial options are, but roasted a lb and it's been fine in the freezer for 6 months now. We'd drink it more often if our backup grinder didn't result in 15sec shot times on the finest setting. 1st world problems though.

I've been adding 200-250 mg (~1/8 tsp) of L-Theanine powder to coffee for years. There's strong clinical evidence that combining L-theanine with caffeine counteracts caffeine-induced increases in blood pressure. More broadly, it also seems to reduce BP spikes in response to stressful tasks and situations, and promotes relaxation without sedation.

Tea has a fraction of the caffeine coffee has, plus naturally occurring theanine (though adding a little more is good, too). A pretty strong cup of matcha is only ~35 mg of caffeine.

On the alcohol side, I love Busch NA these days. Ever since my 2019 head injury I've had no desire to drink. Plus, I can drink the Busch in the car without worrying about DUI or Open Container.

decaf tea is different than herbal tea. Decaf black tea is still not hard to find, but I do agree with Toadman, it doesn't pack the same flavor as caffeinated.

Along the same lines as KQ's points above, I've also read that filtered coffee is less bad for BP than French press, in case you are a French press person.

Anyway, I'd wager diet and exercise would have a far bigger impact than cutting out caffeine.

Yup - have read that paper filters remove some of what is considered harmful/not good.

MY BP is weird. The Systolic never gets above 140, and that is rare but the diasolic caused a nurse in FL during my COVD test to say , that cant be right and check other arm. still triple digits.
On meds now and lifestyle changes from doc. Reduce the booze, reduce caffeine, more excersise. used to only get on my bike for big rides when I could spare a few hours, now go out multiple times a week in the AM for short intense 30-40 mins

Drinking less and exercising more is never a bad thing.


Diet wasnt bad before, didnt think I ate a lot of salt but then realized my fav snacks were Almonds & Beef jerkey, plus it really is everywhere if you pay attention..


So the NA beer ( tried a lot of craft brew but all tasted off, Heinken 0% best for me plus 2 roads lil devils. Good IPA at like 2,5 %,90 cals) is more ritual for me. When I am watching a Dodger game I nervous drink beers, now I just swap out the full test after 1 or 2. Same for United matches and Guinness.

Have some good decaf teas in the house ( Gypsy Cold Care yessir) but need to brew up a cold batch of one. Also eating out hard to find decaf Ice tea, thats more what I meant. Got some Peets Decaf thats OK.

You could speak to a high blood pressure specialist doctor for specific recommendations - especially given your family history.

Less inflammation is a good goal - which less booze and more exercise will help with. Less sugar intake might help - that is if you want to go full bore and cut out all the fun things in life :P

True dat - people often overlook the diasolic pressure but it's just as important. It's how much pressure your blood is exerting against your artery walls while the heart is resting between beats.

YMMV but 12 yars ago I quit all added sugar & honey and cut food portions by 40% cu of type II diabetes

In 6 months I lost 12-15 lbs going from an over weight BMI to a normal BMI, lost the gut, a1c went down 2 points, good cholestral went up, bad cholestral went down

IME the more sugar you eat the more you want so just stop using sugar pretty soon you won't miss it

10 yars ago I stopped all booze for 6 months, ate normal which was already no/ low sugar , a lot of training

end of 6 months my weight was exactly the same, a1c was half apoint lower

and everyone at parties was drunk and boring

Zero Gravity, here in Burlington, launched Rescue Club Brewing. I’ve also heard Brooklyn Brewing, BrewDog, and Athletic Brewing have n/a offerings.

It’s not always about weight. Cutting down on sugar and booze could potentially lead to less inflammation. Which could potentially lead to lower diastolic blood pressure. Potentially.

If you want weight loss (which will lower blood pressure as well) then it gets a lot more complicated - including timing of your meals, fiber content, content of macros in meals etc etc etc etc.

I’m not at all surprised your weight never changed. That’s exactly what I would expect (no difference in weight) with the changes you mentioned.

As far as tea goes, try rooibos. Wonderful flavor and naturally caffeine free. As far as alc goes - I've just cut down and upped other things as others have noted. Mass dispensaries are usually convenient to highways.

Many of you know my dad had a serious stroke in his 50s (still cant swallow) so taking this shit seriously.

Now I used to laugh at folks that drank decaf coffee, whats the point? Well when ever other non caffeine laden beverage is full of sugar what are my choices?

Decaf tea harder to find. Would love some good suggestions there tho, hot and iced. Please include where to find.

Still have good beers on occasion but a few and then onto Heineken 0%. Cant drink NAIPAS or similar, to sweet.
Same watching sports. Couple of Guiness/Modelos depending on the sport to start then onto fake beers.
Yes also drinking ton of water and soda stream ( with bitter occasionally) but give me a drink to order when out.
What am I missing (and seriously if its fermented and doesn't contain alcohol keep it to your self)

Lisinopril and Lipitor. They work, minimal side effects. Significant reduction in risk of heart attack and stroke. Drink coffee and booze in moderation.

I understand that some healthy people just have high blood pressure and cholesterol. I’m all about living longer.

well apres diet change/ cutting sugar the weight was already at normal BMI so while I sometimes bounce down but mostly up 3 lbs either way it always returns to that same fasting weight

Stopping drinking and literaly diving off the wagon with a beer in each hand did nothing to weight

getting drunk or just drinking was exactly the same as 6 months before so it was not easier to get drunk

what I did lose was a certain sharpness from being substance free

The Mayo clinic's advice to eliminate it and then reintroduce it and see what happens to your BP seemed reasonable to me but hey you're the doc.

In the past, I have had acid reflux and I just had my gall bladder removed. 4-5 weeks ago, I quit coffee (I regularly drank 3 double espressos/day) red meat, fried food, cheese, enriched flour, alcohol consumption and chocolate, cold turkey. Of course, I crave each of these things, but it's just not worth it........to be continued.
