I disagree that these folks really think they have these skills. They know they don't have the references to back up their positions, they never post them.

I am arguing why they dig their heels in like that. And I think that it's largely because they get treated dismissively at best when confronted with the data.


Maybe both of us are exhibiting self-belief in skills and knowledge that simply isn't there in this regard.

Repeating what so obviously doesn't work is not what science suggests. Stick with the data and arguments, leave the disrespect.

What I find hard to believe is that these anti-vaxxers have the gall to show up at the hospital and expect to be treated by the same healthcare workers they have been disbelieving and disparaging for the past year and a half. Losing 50lbs, quitting an addiction are all significantly harder than getting a shot IMO.

My 80+ year old aunt, who has a severe case of Lupus (immune compromised), pretty bad asthma, and is generally frail (down to about 110lbs at 5’7”) seems to have turned the corner and is feeling better than she was. All of us are pretty convinced this would have been a death sentence for her but for the vaccine. Also, her husband, who has mesothelioma, has yet to get any symptoms or a positive test.

The point was to address the position posed above that those folks, due to personal choices, don’t deserve treatment from healthcare workers (or perhaps should’ve been more responsible to begin with).

Lupus is genetic + environment I believe, so not applicable to the aforementioned point. Sincerely glad to hear your aunt got the vaccine and feels good about it.

Fair question, and I would say no, it is not equivalent. Those fat/addicted etc. people aren't overwhelming emergency rooms and ICUs, stressing healthcare workers to the max, not to mention actually spreading the disease to them in many instances. Call me crazy but I happen to consider a once-in-a-century pandemic to be a unique circumstance, apart from our everyday self-induced health problems that our system is designed to handle. And when all it takes to almost certainly avoid being hospitalized due to covid is a frickin free poke in the arm, then those unwilling to take that simple step for the betterment of humanity should really consider just staying home and treating themselves.

Of course I realize we're not going to turn away these fools at the hospital door, but damn, it's heartbreaking to see the HC workers going through all this surge bullshit again when it is totally unnecessary, and most of the ones they are caring for are plainly undeserving of their sacrifice.
