finally some light is shed on this
Gonna bump this thread because I will be in Burlington later this month for 3 days/4 nights with the wife and 10 year old kiddo. We'll be staying at a place in Jericho (not exactly sure where, it's an airbnb). I lived in Burlington some 20 years ago for a couple of years, so I have some vague knowledge, but it was a long time ago and I didn't have a kid, so need more ideas. We are not high rollers so we can't afford any activity that is super expensive, and will be eating at the airbnb a lot, but kid-friendly food recommendations are also welcome. We are on vacation after all. Here are the things we want/plan to do, please help fill in the blanks:
- Shelburne Museum (should we also hit Shelburne Farms?)
- Something (or more than one something) Lake Champlain related. Should we take the ferry across the lake? Rent some boats? Rent some bikes and bike the path/causeway? Or just stroll the lakeshore?
- Walk around downtown, any particular shops or food places we shouldn't miss? We'll definitely be walking Church Street, but if any side streets are worth strolling, let me know.
- Would love to find a stream swimming hole somewhere, as that is something my kid hasn't really experienced much. I do recall visiting Huntington Gorge and that might be cool for her, but I'd prefer something less crowded and more out of the way. I always loved directions like "drive 2.4 miles down the road from the country store, pull off at the little wide spot in the road, and hike down the trail", those types of places. Feel free to PM me if you don't want to post deets on the internet. I know some of these places ARE on the internet, I've been to Buttermilk Falls and Hamilton Falls down south for ex, so it doesn't have to be truly "secret". If Huntington or something similar is the best option, I'm ok with that too. We'll be there Sun-Tue, so hopefully it wouldn't be too crowded on a weekday.
- Anything else we should consider or shouldn't miss? We did Ben and Jerry's 3 years ago, so don't need to do that one.

Huntington Gorge isn't crowded during the week, kind of the same for every swimming hole these days (Warren zevon hole, Bolton potsmoking holes, etc).
All of the suggestions in this thread are great, and here is the current Lake Monsters schedule:

You know that Jericho is an easy 30 from most places in Burlington right? You live in Boulder, do you spend your free time strolling around Pearl Street and the Hill? If no, I say skip in to vacation.
The beauty of Vermont is to be Vermonty as fuck. Fairfax Diner, Jana's/The Cupboard, Brewster River Pub, Joes Pond, Bread & Puppet, The Long Trail, Mt. Mansfield via the Sunset Ridge Trail, Cabot Creamery etc.
I like Ben & Jerry's, Cold Hollow Cider Mill and the Burlington Waterfront just fine but they are total tourist traps.
Jerico is close to Underhill so camo up the kids, sneak into the range and watch if General Dynamics is test firing the Gau's. Sure to be an eye opener.

The Burlington ferry isn’t going to open this year. Not enough tourists at the moment.
U are going to be in Jericho, go hike Mt Mansfield from Stevensville. You can do it in sneakers.
And swim at Jeff falls.
There's like 12 amazing breweries in Burlington...youll have to get to all that other stuff on a different trip to the Vermont.

Yeah, I don't go stroll Pearl Street, but if I was visiting and staying in Louisville, I sure would. It's 22 minutes to Church Street from the place we're staying according to Mr. Google. We chose it because it's out in the country, with a pool, but also not far from Burlington.
I know plenty of Vermonty as fuck; I spent a lot of my childhood in Southern Vermont in addition to living in Burlington for 2 years. And my wife and kid have also spent a bunch of time in Southern VT because of me, and we're sure to drive some country roads, marvel at the farmhouses, stop at a small country store, etc. But they have never been to Burlington, never seen Lake Champlain, etc. The point of this trip is, in many ways, to go to Burlington. Doing all the things that are non-Burlington would be awesome, but we have 3 days so a good bunch of that time is going to be in or around Burlington. And we're tourists, touristy as fuck isn't a bad thing. I mean, I'd send a Southern Vermont visitor to the Country Store in Weston, just because something is touristy doesn't mean a visitor shouldn't go there.
I'm not much of a beer drinker and the kiddo sure isn't, so this won't be a brewery tour. And the kiddo isn't going to be happy if we do a monster hike, though something like Mt Philo may be possible. More likely, we'll hike the trails that are accessible from our airbnb.
Details? Where is that?

Shelburne museum and Shelburne farms are very different. I think the museum is back up and running but the farm is still pretty much shut down. I think you can see the cheese making but the main house/hotel is closed as is the restaurant. Cool place to see rural Vermont close to Burlington but probably not worth it on a short trip.
Bike path is fun, great people watching and if the 10 year old can make it out to the causeway it’s a unique experience. Maybe check out a cruise in the spirit of Ethan Allen if you want to see Burlington from the lake. Not exactly cheap but probably cheaper than renting a boat. Check out the community sailing center if you want to rent boats. Canoes, kayaks, and sailboats are available. Burlington surf club is another place I think you can rent sups or kayaks. New but great location in the old blodgett plant.
While on the waterfront the skinny pancake and spot on the dock are good food options. I’ll admit I have eaten at that spot location but their original spot has always been good. Skinny pancake is cheap for downtown, kid friendly, and next door to Foam brewing.
Good info, thanks! I've been to the Shelburne Museum and know my kid will dig it. Was wondering about Shelburne Farm, never been but I knew it was a completely different type of place, good to know that I should skip it for this trip.
Spirit of Ethan Allen is on the list as a possibility.
Looking at a map, I think the full length of bike path/causeway is probably too long for the kiddo, looks like it could easily be 25 miles RT?
And I definitely appreciate the places to eat by the lake suggestion.
