The interesting thing about placebos is that they work even if you tell the person it's a placebo. OTOH they work better for some things than for others. I doubt a placebo will stop Covid but certainly could cause a vaccine reaction. When they report out side effects of drugs they report the side effects in the drug group and controls and note which side effects are statistically more common in the drug group and which are similar in both groups.

My dad had his second round a little over a week ago. He got the Pfizer vaccine. No reaction at all to either dose. No soreness in his arm, no grogginess the next day, no aches and pains.

Meanwhile, the county I live in had received less than 1/20 of the doses that it was supposed to. I'm wearing a huge fuckin' happy hat.

Iowa. We fucking suck at getting shots into arms (47th) at the same time we are leading the way with massive inequities. So much win Covid Kim.

I don't blame anybody here for not wanting to see me leave the middle west. Iowa has become the nation's petri dish.

Also mask mandate ends at midnight. Get here! Super Bowl Sunday is going to go off. The British variant and chicken wings served up on a platter. Not sure why everyone isn't en route.

Yeah, gonna keep an eye on things leading up to the next time I am there, it wasn't meant to be my last trip.

IA has been getting its ass kicked lately. First Trump and his tariffs kicked pork farmers in the nutz. Then the COVID hits and does a number on the residents. Have a co-worker who got out but went back to take care of both infected parents. His Dad almost died after a months long battle. Several times they thought he was going to die. Finally was able to get out of the hospital but sounds like he needs supplemental oxygen to keep him going.

I honestly could never live some place so flat and far from the ocean. Props to those that eek out a living in a place like that. Enjoy the maskless, super spreader superbowl parties. Or, maybe don't.

It used to be a proud place. Good schools. Good Infrastructure. But you are correct, who with a good mind and a choice would choose to live here? The brain drain has turned the state into a dump. It kind of happened under my nose of denial. Holed up in one of the decent cities that votes Dem. And fooled by the Obama vote.

Now we are America's Covid Petri Dish. And home to America's Dirtiest Rivers.

    A real paradise.

But NE Iowa still isn't flat and it is damned pretty.

I feel like someday before I die I should visit where my dad grew up in Iowa (Emmetsburg).

In other news, I mentioned how hard it was to get my mom a shot- one of the 10 waitlists that my siblings set up for her finally came through and she got her first shot yesterday. So relieved. Now just need to get the MIL her shot, she's a former smoker with bad COPD and there is no way she'd survive a bout with the Covid.

My mom had a former co-worker of hers retire to NE Iowa for a couple years. Ultimately it was just too isolated and there's that ocean thing for those of us who have always lived near by.

Got two awesome former IA residents that are great co-workers. They don't seem to miss IA though.

As I mentioned before I assisted a neighbor with getting signed up and jabbed. Our community is actively asking neighbors to help neighbors - you can do it too. You know what they say... "we're all in this together." The sooner we get everyone jabbed the better for all of us.

Ask for help, offer help in getting community vaccinated, Walla Walla County health officials say
When you see something that is not right, not just, not fair, you have a moral obligation to say something. To do something." Rep. John Lewis

My Dad got his today, in Chile [emoji1071]. He lives about 2 hrs south of Santiago.

So basically, if that is the third world, what does that make us?

I did get an email from my county. Receipt from 3 weeks ago when I signed up as an at risk person.

That's great for your pops. Having been there a few times I consider Chile 1st world...great country...nice people. Your point remains though...I don't know what that means for the US. We're slipping.

Santiago is, but once you get out of town, to think that these smaller, rural, places are ahead of us says something.
