An awful lot of the bad rep comes from the time when LR was owned by BMW. This is part Jag and part Ford, the 4.2 SC is apparently the most reliable motor and the ZF 6spd is finicky but pretty robust. Like TR said the electronics are weird but I've had more silly problems with Dodge and Ford than I can count. This is also 14 years old so the bugs should have been mostly exterminated by now. The suspension stuff is questionable so we'll see but that's actually pretty cheap. The thing is a fucking monster from 70 to 100, it pulled up a hill with a Hellcat on the way home from Aldo's shop and had room left but traffic...

Sure it's got some gremlins but what old truck doesn't. I'm gonna clean the leather and maple interior tomorrow then go to the LR therapy session Sunday.

If you can fix stuff yourself, you could own a land rover and operate it at semi reasonable cost, but you will be fixing stuff non stop. My old bimmers don't have high pressure fuel pumps, bad pixels, and my 540 has the original nikasil block. If the nikasil made it this far in life, it's fine, the problem was high sulphur gas in the late 80s and early 90s, and if the car came from an area with good gas, the problem did not materialize. And most have had the engines that were damaged by the bad gas replaced under warranty. If you find a nikasil engine that runs well today, it's fine. No longer an issue. The older bmws up into the mid late 90s were excellent cars. Strong build quality, fun to drive. Then they went downhill quickly.
Back to rovers, brother in law used to run a land rover dealership in new england, and even he said they were pieces of shit.
    Let's debate. [emoji16]

I'm not even gonna bother getting in a debate with BasinBonger. Let's both agree that both marques have their downfalls. The only thing I'll stick to is the fact that with my Rover, I knew the shit show I was walking into. I highly doubt the majority of Bimmer owners know what's in store.

    Also..

Bring it.... I'd ask for yours, but I wouldn't want you to have to replace the cluster.

Didn't the Discos have major engine block and head casting issues?

Drove a 2014 LR4 back then and liked it a lot. The reputation kept me away. Still a great looking vehicle with the tall, boxy profile. Same with the Disco I and II.

Those lr4 are actually pretty decent. But if you are getting that fancy a car, why not get the good car? The land cruiser? I don't know, I get some people like them, the calculus just doesn't add up for me.

I dunno, I know what I got myself into and I'm good with it. Partly because I see guys like you and some others in this thread gettin' down and dirty and fixing things rather than just replacing parts. I can do that too so I got a truck that's not all rusty and nasty that can be maintained (hopefully not too often though) so that I can do what I know I can do.

Pic uploader doesn't seem to work for me anymore but here's some pics. https://photos.app.goo.gl/gStJSErxafVVt7dS7

Driving (and bench racing) would not be nearly as fun if everyone drove the same vehicle. Exterior looks pretty clean in the pics. That's not a color I've seen very often. Headlight restoration would make a big difference not only for looks but visibility. Here is a good comparison if you go that route.

That was after an hour or so spent on each. I could barely tell the headlights were on before I got them to where they are now. I'm going to go get some 2k paper tomorrow and do another round of wax on wax off and then polish them up. Hopefully that gets them back to decent.

edit: Or maybe get that Sylvania kit, it seemed to work pretty well for that guy.

Baller yo. Looks cushy. Definitely higher end than a 100 series (but the Lexus version is pretty cush). I just like cars. I like that other people like different stuff than I do. Keeps it interesting. My first bmw impressed me with it's driving dynamics, and it was pretty reliable. I also know I can get great deals on cars that generally need a bit of maintenance, and will then be good runners, or a good flip. I liked the discovery I drove, I've done beach driving in a late model range, and an lr4. I've driven v10 bimmers and turbo miatas on the racetrack, and owned slow ass Land cruisers, and baller 80 series land cruisers, and I like a nice quiver, pick the right tools for the job. The current 100 series land cruiser has been great, some maintenance to get it up to speed, but it was pretty well maintained. The original alternator did give up the ghost at 240k mi, but otherwise, it's been stellar. My current 540 did require a ton of work, but try to find a decent sport package car with the 4.0v8 and the 6 speed manual. Not a lot out there. So I put in the work to make it a nice car. The e30 just got some routine maintenance and has been otherwise trouble free. The Porsche is modified and fast, and as such, intensive on the maintenance.
I see old old range rovers around occasionally, and they are cool. I like the disco, but know enough to stay away. The lr4 could be good, but any better than a land cruiser? I just remember what the brother in law says. Which would you take deep into the utah desert? The late 80s early 90s bmws were excellent cars. Yes, require more maintenance than a honda, but they have great engines, nice chassis and driving dynamics, and of course manual transmissions.
If you bring your range out, let's go on an adventure. I'll just make sure I throw a tow strap I the back. [emoji12]

    GL,
That's not a common exterior color, I like it. The interior is funky though. I wonder if it came with the blonde wood or a previous owner put that kit in?

Also be careful if you have damp blue jeans with the light leather, as they can make the leather blue.

    Enjoy!!

There's really no need for sandpaper unless you have dings you need to smooth out. Those headlights will look brand new with an orbital buffer and a wax with a light polishing agent in it. Trying to do it entirely by hand with multiple grits is time consuming, and those lights are not flat. 5 mins on each side with an orbital, done.

There's actually another one this color in my town but yeah, I don't think I've seen it often and people on the LR forums really seem to like it. That's the regular color for the maple according to a build options list I saw but the leather color was special order only. The driver's seat has two split seams and some rattyness so I'm gonna look into dealing with that and will probably put in a darker center panel just so I don't turn it colors with wet pants. I might even go with something a little less slippery but I don't know if the cooled seat will work right with some other material. I might stop at Harbor Freight and grab a small random orbital unit, it was a lot of effort to get them to where they're at now but it was pretty gratifying watching the scaly shit coming off. Now I need to buff all the scratches out. We should meet one day and compare notes.

What say the Toyota fans about a 2006 4runner limited with the 4.0?

    I own a ‘96 4runner.
The ‘05-‘07 v6 4runners are great. They have a 5-speed transmission, and the best center differential of any of them. You get RWD, AWD, and 4WD. The AWD mode uses a Torsen limited slip. Super nice.
The anti-lock brakes got a lot better going from the 3rg gen to the 4th gen, but I don’t think they’ve improved much since.
I’ll be looking for a good ‘05-‘07 after I pay off my house.

Most opinions seem to be they are fine. Just to give one data point. My wife had that motor in her last runner and it threw a rod through the block at around 180k. To be fair it was having problems and when it went we were towing a very small uhaul up a pass and also used/abused it offroad. Replaced it with a 2003 v8 and it's really nice to have the extra power which I already knew since I have the 4.7 in my tundra. I think depending on price/miles and how much off roading and towing you plan on doing the V6 is just fine for most people.

Edit: not a bad price. If you're not in a hurry and willing to travel to find the right one they can be found but it takes some effort. People also want a lot for the V8 and locked rear combo.

Very personable couple selling it but total lack of info. No carfax, if I want inspection I pay it, they know it’s over bluebook, despite seeming to be rolling in cash.

No maintenance records, oil on the dipstick seems to be 3 quarts high? Do they read weird?

Walk away. 3 quarts high will cause problems when you hit high rpm's on the way home and it might be because they're trying to hide something. For $10k you ought to be able to get one with sub 200k with the 4.7.

I've had 2 4Runners and both were absolutely bulletproof.

'00 with 275k on the clock from new that still got $6k on trade-in and ran like a top; and

'06 with the 4.0L that we used as a winter car when I made the foolish decision to exclusively own rwd cars in northern climates. It was pretty basic but it had a ton of space, was more capable in the snow than the '00 thanks to some weight in the back and felt a ton more plush when it came to the ride. Not one issue with it ever. Tires and oil changes that's it. Put 75k on the clock and traded it in for a disaster of an X5. I'd take that base model Runner any day of the week over that fully loaded Bimmer.

I'd hold out for a 4.7l personally. The 4.0 is fine, the 4.7 is just, better.

Obv moar power is better. But in that year which was more reliable? Sucks that I have to decide so soon. Probably be gone tomorrow.
