Might take a look at that when I'm up for new treads again. It's just that I need all the help I can get on the uphill, but I feel like an Ardent Race or small Recon would be in tatters instantly, so Aggressor it is, I suppose.
What I probably need are 25mm internal rims laced up to my existing soso hubs maybe even reusing same spokes if possible. What say the collective on XM421's?
    No longer stuck.

Haven't tried 421s, but DT's high end aluminum rims are generally excellent. I've had 471s, 481s, and 511s and been very impressed with all of them. I think the 421s are basically similar construction to the 481, just 25mm internal instead of 30. The 471 and 511 are the beefier versions at 25 and 30mm.

There's also ARC 25's, Arches, etc. Am I too heavy and klutzy for sub-500g aluminum rims?

Unless you're doing the work yourself, why reuse "so so" hubs?

Will cross post this over in the "ask the experts" thread, but thoughts on this Race Face Aeffect wheelset? 30mm internal, Trace hubs. I have the same hubs on another bike that came with 29er Aeffect SL 24 rims, and they're holding up well - though not a ton of miles on that bike yet, maybe 800.

Looking at these as a possible replacement for a stock wheelset with Formula hubs and WTB STP i29 rims. The rear hub eats bearings.

I mean, they seem better than my last set, but not light. They might be built by Shimano. Engagement isn't all that bad. Just heavy. And sometimes you can reuse spokes (but not nipples. Seems to be what the interwebz says.)
Also, I'm still running QR. Yeah.
We'll see. I'm really trying to save up for more expensive things, but there's always the chance of an extra $500 and just blowing it on totally new wheels with Bitex hubs or something like that.

Everything built by shimano will have shimano branding and part numbers.

Wanted to try something different on the new build.
Back in the day I loved Schwalbes in the midwest. Way less so in northern New Mexico. After hearing good things about the new Addix stuff I decided to give them another shot.
Went with the Magic Mary/Snakeskin/Addix Soft and Rock Razor/Snakeskin/Addix Speedgrip. Due to Schwalbe's large volumes I could get away with the 2.35 (equal to most brand's 2.5), keeping the weights under 900grams.
After 2 months of serious beat down in nasty rocky terrain, I'm impressed. I'd hear pops that I was sure were knobs ejecting, only to see the tires both looking like new. The MM has phenomenal grip on hardpack and the RR is fast rolling and great when leaned over. Traction up loose stuff is as expected for a semi slick but that's really the only downside.

That's really good to hear! They used to run small and last about 2 seconds. For $90, you better get some fucking awesome tires.

So, I've been able to get away with lower pressures and that has helped a bit. That and working on my body English. It seemed like they used to squirm lower, but not now? IDK. around 25 or 26psi in the front and 28 or so in the rear. And not grabbing the rear brake as hard. Only went down about 2 or 3psi, but it seems to make a somewhat noticeable difference.
I'm still not sure exactly how I'm supposed to take those long, un-banked turns with a little kitty litter on top. Faster?! That's the only time where I really really feel that transition. Or at least I think so. Also, the berms with some gravel in them on the Mo Z. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. Being on a hardtail 29er with a flexy fork and narrow rims is only gonna yield so much cornering prowess, but I don't think I'm approaching the limit properly ie it's the pilot not the plane.

Still curious to try the new E.13's as they look faster, even if heavier.

Ordered up the new michelin dh34's 29f/27.5r . Lifts start soinning in a couple weeks. Pricey in the dh casing. Twice as much as their "bike park" casing alternative.
Hoping for a little more protection and be able to keep the psi lower for steeps and not flexy through the berm trails. Theyve got some heft happening

    Old: e13 TRSr 2.35 / DHR II 2.4 3 exo 3c

Hoping for faster rolling without any sacrifice in grip

Looking for a fast rolling tire to replace a spec. slaughter rear tire. What tire and casing does the collective recommend? Fast rolling is pretty high on the priority list. Havent had a problem climbing most of the steepest of climbs around here with the Slaughter. Have considered the Rock Raxor, Minion SS, and sticking with Slaughter. Will be mounted on We are One Agents and ridden on Mojo HD3.

I don't think the Minion SS is great. Basically it feels like they just took a DHF and lopped the center knobs off, with the result that the overall profile is too squared off, and the side knobs sit too high. The effect is that you're riding on the side knobs all the time, which takes away a lot of the rolling advantage of the semi-slick, and the engagement of the side knobs happens too soon when you lean the bike over.

The newer e13 is a really good semi-slick. But the bead on their new tires is super tight, and I was straight up unable to mount the LG1 EN casing ones on Agents. Various DT aluminum rims, and the newer WR1 Unions worked okay.

I dont care to have a wrestling match getting my tire on so I will probably lean away from the e13 tires. Thanks for the info regarding the Minion SS.

Rock razor is pretty good, especially if they're still selling the 27.5 in the super gravity casing.

I ordered some tires from CRC on Tuesday (for less than everybody else), and they arrived on Thursday. Jenson can't even get them in the truck that fast.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

The reason I'm stopping using the e13s (TRSr) is because I literally have to cut the bead with a scalpel to get the tire off my roost rims. I've had to walk out when I had an unpluggable sidewall hit that I could have thrown a tube in.... if only I could have gotten the bead off. LG1 EN might be a safer bet with burlier sidewalls... I really liked the TRSr

Damn. I've been able to get them off okay, if I was able to get them on in the first place. But yeah, they were straight up unmountable on WR1 Agents.

I do really like how they work though (both the Gen3, in MoPo and Race compounds, and the Semi-Slick).

Rock razor is fast and corners well but has effectively no brake traction. I just put a trail off on my sentinel and it seems like a nice mix of fast and grippy but the 2.4 is tiny like almost as small as a schwalbe 2.25 and I wish I bought the 2.6

Considered a WTB Trail Boss 2.4? I've got one in the "fast/tough" version going on the back of my Balance before my next trip up to Angel Fire.

I'm super happy with my new setup for bike park, Assegai in the front, Agressor in the rear. Assegai has been blowing my mind with it's grip, coming from the dhf. Thing just rips, point and shoot. Been killing it in the loose and dry lately. Definitely a slow roller when things get pedally. Agressor has been solid for the rear, even moderate grip as it tips over, coming from dhr2 and more recently high roller 2.
