You gotta ask whether they’re just doing this to try and make me look bad.” The president went on to demand that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo personally apologize to him for harboring African Americans to begin with.

The US numbers may be lower today but when many regions in America haven't been as heavily impacted we can expect to see those numbers change. As NYC declines, case counts elsewhere are rising. The curve hasn't been flattened so much as one area declines while another rises.

And it's not "just the flu" if you are under ~60. Lower probability for those under 60 doesn't mean lower probability for those under 60 compared with the flu.

Comparing COVID deaths to influenza deaths is like comparing apples to oranges. The charts show counted confirmed deaths while flu deaths are estimates. Comparing counted deaths to counted deaths shows COVID is many times more deadly even for those under 60.

When I'm saying "just the flu", I'm referring to the death rate which is below .1% in an average year. It's only when you start approaching the 50+ bracket that you start seeing comparable rates. Below 50 it's far less than .1%.

If you are a 20 something who thinks it's ok to hit the clubs because if you get infected you won't get sick, although you might infect someone over 65 who has a significant chance of dying, that means I have the right to defend myself against you. Since I can't get adequate PPE to protect myself my only alternative would be to shoot you dead if you aren't wearing a mask and are about to step closer than 6 feet to me. That's the logical endpoint of the survival of the fittest everyone for themselves world a lot of people seem to be advocating. Is that the world we are heading towards?

The other funny (but not funny) thing about the "economy" crowd is that they don't think about the economic cost of a death. That 45 year old with underlying issues that would have otherwise lived to 80? He/she had a lot of consuming and GDP-ing to go over the next 35 years. The 75 year old that dies would have otherwise been contributing to the economy for 5, 10, 20 years. Even if you want to be cold hearted and only look at the economic impacts, opening everything up and letting nature take its course is actually worse long term for the economy.

what’s been getting to me is the loud pushback against masks, from the same people demanding reopening. If your big beef was that the economy needed to re-open and let people get back to work, and one of the compromises was that OK we’ll open some stuff up but please wear a mask when you’re out and about, why protest the masks? How am I not discussing a much more complicated reality? That's kind of the point I've been trying to make. The data suggests that a one size fits all approach is not appropriate.

The "it's just the flu" is half in jest - the point is it's much less severe than thought for many people.
