Well in most of inland Maine there's basically almost no way to make a living. Farming is mostly marginal or worse, paper industry is way down, tourism is spotty at best, and there's very little industry. People leave to try to make a living.

    Old Mainers are invincible.
Had a 97 year old Mainer landlord. Looked and acted like 65.
That was 20 years ago. He’s probably still Alive.

And the ones that made good money off tourism go to Florida in the winter. Plus all the rich old people with second homes on the coast.

Only if there's black people involved, yes.

I'm essential employee at essential business, so still going in to work every day. If anything, I'm even busier due to dealing with covid related crap. Meanwhile, wife is at home attempting to work remotely full-time while attempting to home school a 6 year old and dealing with a three year old. I know we're lucky to have job security, etc. etc. but still it's just rough every day. We just moved in the fall to a place on a much smaller property, so there's not even the big yard and woods we used to have to get kids outside easily.

That is impossible. Wife is doing same thing, with kids the same ages, without working and she is getting her ass-kicked some days. I've been working a bit less to help her out.

between my work and me always cleaning/taking care of the kids, i've been full-on with small breaks from 6-7am to 8-9pm. I thought about whining about it and then I realized, oh, this is now a shared responsibility household, this is what my wife has been wanting for years. I'll just keep it to myself, yeah. (she normally works btw)

Yeah it's bad especially because kids have so much EXTRA energy from being cooped up without socializing or running wild with their friends. It sucks but I just try to reassure her that it's fine if school work has to take a backseat and you just have to let them veg out at the tv more than you'd like - you just have to do whatever you need to so you can get through the days without going totally mental. I try to keep the kids out of her hair once I get home so she can actually focus fully on work for a while but just long days all around.

You need to get them little weight vests. Put them on the minute they get out of bed in the morning, and don't take them off unless you're giving them their weekly hose-off on the back porch or they're going to sleep. It will slow them down and they'll be so yoked by the time school finally starts again they'll never have to worry about being bullied.

Sadly for Karen, there aren't any black people east of the crest. Would Mexicans suffice?

This actually sounds kind of brilliant.

On the general subject of outlets for childhood energy, the trampoline we bought last November has been invaluable. An incredibly clutch purchase in retrospect.

Yeah we are saving metric assloads on childcare costs and both have our jobs so we are allegedly "ahead" financially but most days I just want to crawl into a hole and have an excavator fill it up. Not worth it. At all.

yeah, in theory we're ahead because we have the same income but much less in expenses. But we were generally running in the red all the time, so saying we're "ahead" when we're still scraping by is kinda weird.

And like RootSkier, I'd trade being behind for this whole fucking thing to end.

We pay for daycare with an fsa and you can’t change contribution rates mid year so not even seeing any savings. Got no refunds for spring sports yet either they’re “looking into” if they’ll give refunds, lol.

Same here no refunds yet. I'm sure they want to attempt to offer some very limited baseball season so they can keep the cash. I figure I'm out $400 for baseball and lax. Kid got a sweet lax sweatshirt..lol. that's not including equipment costs.
