I'm not a VW head but the Mk7 and Mk7.5 have sunroof issues that effect probably 50% of the Golf Alltracks. Smart money is buying the S with no sunroof of if you find a deal on an SE or SEL some guys report having great luck just applying vinyl wrap over the roof. Of course you still have to deal with potential damage from previous water intrusion.

Personally I could care less about a sunroof but we do have one on our 4R that I enjoy...17 years old and still not leaking...while brand new VW's panos leak off the lot. Lol.

30k on my Mk7.5 18S Alltrack and the intermittent wiper relay has stopped working. Need to get it in to get that warrantied. Otherwise no other issues. No oil use between changes and the MT6 is perfect. Did 18 hours straight through the way less traveled on the way home from JH after the Covid shutdown and it was fantastic the whole way. Snow storm over Togwotee, rain, some gravel in Nebraska.

Saw this today. Not sure if it belongs here but someone put a lot of love into it and should be appreciated. I’m not even really an admirer of these, but was so cherry - pics don’t do it justice. Click image for larger version.

Since it's been brought up, I'll throw my 2 cents in here. I bought a '14 cpo VW Golf TDI 2 years ago from a dealer. Had 53k miles on the clock, single owner etc. I paid $11,750 out the door. At first I wasn't a fan of the DSG (this is the first non-stick vehicle I've owned in 15 years), but I've gotten used to it and I'm fine with it now. I drive a 60/40 split of highway and city with a very light foot, and average low 40s mpg. Occasionally I feel the need, the need for speed, and drop it into sport mode to squeal tires and feel some very moderate G force and it drops to lower mid 30s. YMMV.

I like the car, it's very comfortable, it's peppy enough to satisfy my need to go fast-ish once in awhile. The warranty was attractive, and I feel like I got a decent price. I did have a problem this past winter where the intercooler froze and got plugged up. I didn't have to pay for the fix, but it took awhile to get the parts so overall a mild inconvenience. VW keeps sending me offers for crazy trade-in value, and I've considered taking them up on it for something bigger, but it seems too good to be true. They want to put me in a gasser, and I like the diesel. I'll keep it for awhile yet.

Well bad news this am. The 06 tundra secondary injection pump is fucked. About 2500$ trucks got 170k on it and I've put about $5k in it over the last 3 years for various things.
Looks like it's Jetta shopping time.

    Some sunroof input:
    1. In hotter environs, they've been known to expand just a hair and get creaky or even stuck. Proper lubing and using it occasionally usually solves this rare event.
    2. The drain issue is that at each corner of the sunroof, there is a concealed drain port. From that hole, a hose was connected to run the water down through the pillars to beneath the car. These hoses have come unglued in a handful of cars and it drains into the car, usually into the front footwell; sometimes through the upper center console.
The common fix is to pull down the headliner and silicone the drain hose to the nipple, fixed.
It's common enough to be a thing, but proportionally it's very few, really.

I had a sunroof on my '09 and loved it. Was less of an option when I bought the '12. I'd buy another with it, no question.

The TDI has a huge following online at TDI club. Researching issues, fixes etc. become way easier with a 1000 people telling you about their experiences.

There are still a lot of dealers trying for top dollar, shop hard. PM for angles...

Also, yes on the higher mileage capability; just remove/alter the exhaust system and get a software flash, etc. And yeah, snappy performance too.

That just the pump. You have to rememeber the air valve ports as well. No knowing if part of the fan or a mouse got sucked in. Could just be pump, but if not would be 600 ish with labor now and of not fixed pull it all apart. It's really either do the full fix or dump. I'd imagine at 170k some other high ticket items could pop up over the next little bit. Who knows just sucks right now.

Found this absolute monster on BAT. So many good wagons on there. Guy did a professional quality diesel swap.

A dyno test performed in June 2019 that recorded 454 horsepower and 732 lb-ft of torque

Wasn't that thing for sale on BAT like a year ago? I distinctly remember another white BMW wagon with a diesel swap. Regardless, no clutch, next!

Owned a 2012 TDI Sportwagon 6MT pre dieselgate and it was the bomb
Could pull and pass on the interstate no problemo without a downshift.
Averaged around 38-40 mpg driving it like a high school kid.
Put 40Kmiles on in a couple of years before I lost my job right at the dieselgate payout timeframe and took the $
I regret selling them that car back.

    Thread drift to crossover/SUV territory.

Currently shopping for a grocery getter as my 2001 W210 is about to tick 200k and get handed to one of my teenagers
Loved the sportwagon but it lacks ground clearnace, AWD and semblance of ability to tow.
I imagine I could shoehorn a class 3 hitch and maybe pull raft/driftboat/small camp trailer...
But zero offroad capability is becoming more of a deal breaker and like Skidog my 06 Tundra is getting tired (but paid for and still running well) and I have frame rust concerns
I'm looking to rally around the west desert and forest service roads and pull a float boat up the hayfarm ramp while driving in relative luxury, fold down seat that I can sleep in the back, and gets above 30 MPG
Is that too fucking much to ask?

I'm looking at Toureg TDI from the same time frames, 2009-2016. Also Audi Q5 or Q7 TDI.
Can't find any 6MT so it'd be the DSG.
Toureg has the "Offroad" setting and I have found some compelling Youtube videos of people rolling way gnarlier stuff than I ever would offroad.
Any thoughts on those platforms other than steer away from Audi slushboxes?

This one is kinda boner city https://cars.ksl.com/listing/6375614
    Toureg example https://cars.ksl.com/listing/6299773

I almost hate to consider it but they are giving away Chevy Equinox LT Ecodiesels that get 38mpg.
After driving German for the last 10 years I shudder at the thought but smile at the mpg and price tag.

Flame away for posting such nonsense in the wagon thread

EDIT to add-locking diff this one wins https://cars.ksl.com/listing/6379054

I usually avoid stealerships but if that one was closer I probably would go look at it. There was a private party one on KSL that looked pristine and was a stick but someone got to it hours before me.

I am also interested in which years are good or things to avoid in a Q5. It sounds like the wife may want to replace her A4 wagon with one of those.

There's a lot to read into the TDI purchase.

for example, on that one's carfax, you can see it's been to 3 dealers.
The auburn hills date is the VW buyback date.
Then VA, CO and now UT. Also, the 10,20 and 30k tuneups were free from the dealer on these, always looking for those dates to be done by the stealership, otherwise avoid them.
    40k DSG flushes are critical.
    Then it sat for 9 months, the winter, before VW Alexandria picked it up;
They finally updated the software then sold it to VW CO who sat on it this winter for a few months.
That's an SE, maybe SEL. Another dealer betting the Manual will pull a better price.
They say towing is frowned upon with the DSG, no concern for the manual. Yet in Europe, everyone pulls w/the dsg.

I'd shop cargurus etc. and do a nationwide search to get a feel for the market. And if you know a good wholesaler who can shop for you at the auctions, I bet competition is almost nada...

And again, go to TDIclub forums; There's massive threadage about all VAG models from Audi to Skoda/Seat to VW.
Wanna know firsthand about model issues? Dat's da place. VW Vortex as well...

Any of you car nerds ever repaint a car the same color? The clear coat on my hood and by the sunroof are failing / flaking off, so i am uncertain how major of an undertaking this is to get back like new. Any input for me. This is for my Volvo V70R wagon.
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

I'll tell you how things go on a project A4 I'm working on. Found a body guy who's hard up for work right now and super hooking it up on a sanding, re-clearcoat, polish job. Car's 17 years old, black and oxidized to hell and clear coat looks like crap. I'll see how things go and will post pics. Car's a basket case that needs a ton of work but got it free so I figured what the heck. I'll give it a go and see how it turns out!

The eternal project car debate...spend a few thousand for a wrap job or spend a few thousand more for paint or spend a few thousand more than that and get everything fixed on the body....

Austin didn't post a number, but your suggesting around $4k for a good paint job? Does not need body work.

I love most everything about the alltrack. But rear license plate holder is cheesy. Adding 3m felt spacers to keep it from damaging the rear lid. Also the first one broke from screws to plate attachments. So I thought the Audi version might be better until the stealer told me it was $178. For license plate bracket, really. No really. I mean VW one is $40 and that is bad enough. Design is weird and have not found aftermarket that works.

But gas mileage and power band from 6spd is fun and body roll is minimal compared to suv. So mostly great...,

Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?

So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

I was quoted about 4 hundo and it's for a butt ton of work (guy said it would take about an entire day). Will have to hold off until I see a paycheck someday but I'd like to see what results I get from that since I'm not willing to spend the coin on a paint job on a geriatric Audi. Car's been neglected for years and sat out on a farm so between the chickens all over it and baking in the sun, it's seen better days. Got great potential though! Excited to get to really wrenching on it. Just did a battery swap yesterday and replaced some worn interior pieces. Now onto valve cover gaskets, coil packs, new plugs, and serpentine belt.

Just sign up for one of those use may car as a mobile ad. They will wrap it for you. May get a cool one or advertise tampons. But it’s free

You can spend anywhere from $1000 or under (cheap Maaco job) to $5000 plus for a full repaint. The most important part is the prep work.

Just get it wrapped whatever color you want. Lots of good reasons to wrap instead of paint, money being just one.

So let's say $4k for paint and I sourced some new front seats leathers for $1,500. Those two items are all the car is lacking. Over the last year I have easily put $5k into keeping the car 100%. Bummer is if the car gets wrecked tomorrow, I will have to fight tooth and nail to get $5k out of it, as it is a 2006 with 200k miles on it and USAA is clueless what my car sells for on BAT in good condition. It is one of four ever delivered to North America.

I love the car, but she is long in the tooth and will need lots of repairs down the road. Do I fix her up and drive her another 100k miles or buy the Regal X for $25k and likely be repair free for 100k miles? WWMD?
