They should have kicked Pence's ass out of there. That's inexcusable. What a moran!
My wife just got back from Costco. She said they were handing out masks in line and some people still wouldn't wear them. Some people are truly unredeemable asses.
I had to google it

Regarding Sweden's claims above. 26% (598,000) of Stockholm County are infected by May 1. Today, 1,287 have died in Stockholm County (would be higher on May 1). But if we plug in today's number, that gives us a case fatality rate of 0.002152
Using that case fatality rate in US, if 60% need to be infected to reach herd immunity, 423,513 need to die in US for us to reach herd immunity (and this number would be higher because I used today's death numbers rather than May 1 death number). We got a lot more dying to do.
I had to translate Sweden's health page for the data, so not positive I used correct numbers.
From NY Times story on Pence refusing to wear a mask at the Mayo Clinic:
He also wanted to look workers and researchers “in the eye and say thank you,” he said, although surgical masks do not cover eyes.![]()
I've been reading that their rates are much higher than neighboring countries in active lockdown. Saw their minister of health on the news last night and he didn't exactly exude confidence. No one but the US reporter wore a mask. They were all happy & free laughing at the world. Frankly I'm glad they are doing it their way. It will provide a contrast to lock down and we'll find out if you truly do get immunity or if you are still susceptible to the virus as some models are showing. Someone's got to do it. Might as well be the Swedes.

Pence's response.....I especially like the "look them in the eye" logic. JHC......
Asked by reporters why he did not wear a mask, Pence said he is tested for the coronavirus "on a regular basis, and everyone who is around me is tested for the coronavirus."
"Since I don't have the coronavirus, I thought it'd be a good opportunity for me to be here, to be able to speak to these researchers, these incredible health care personnel and look them in the eye and say thank you," he said.

Totally agree, at least one developed nation needs to go down this road so the rest of us can learn from them. Might as well let Swedish doctors do an experiment on the Swedish population.
Interesting article from Iceland. Iceland was initially going for fast herd immunity. They even were reluctant to ban large gatherings because they were afraid that would slow the virus infection too much, and thus it would take much longer to get herd immunity. Then they started testing and after the numbers came in, they decided the disease was more deadly than they originally thought and changed course to suppression.

Lucky you. I'm good for months, pretty sure. Problem is daily use right now. Weird dreams.
GLADEWATER, TX—Following the Texas governor’s announcement that the state’s economy will begin reopening later this week, local Waffle House waitress Barb Jefferson shrugged and told reporters Tuesday she had spent every shift for the past two decades expecting to die in the restaurant anyway. “I’ve worked nights here for years, and I’ve seen shit a lot worse than a deadly, incurable disease come through those doors,” said the East Texas server, explaining that she had long ago made peace with the fact that she was likely to die the next time she clocked in for a shift at the 24-hour diner franchise, which according to police records has been the site of four armed robberies so far this year. “I honestly have no idea how I’m still alive. You seen some of the deadbeats we get in this place? Every time I refill someone’s coffee I’m afraid I’m interrupting a meth deal. Back in February, we had EMTs wheeling a dead guy out of the men’s room. It’s only a matter of time before a fight breaks out, some shitheel some starts firing a gun, and my number’s up.” At press time, Jefferson was seen wrestling a knife out of a fry cook’s hands after he threatened to stab her over a substitution request in a ham and cheese omelet.
The dead bodies are still contagious.
If I have some time I'll try to dig up the article, but I said this up thread (way up thread now) but the Swedes are SD'ing...they just didn't have to shut the country down to get many of the people in their population to do so. They provided information on the virus and let people decide what to do. I'm sure that's appealing to many of the more libertarian minded folks around here...I know it is to me. That said, acting like they've done nothing different during this time is just not true. Their movie theater attendance is down (again, going off memory here) like 95%, restaurants and other dining establishments are way down as well, like 80% decline. Also, I don't know about you, but last time I was in Scandinavia the locals their don't eat out a ton because it's motherfucking expensive to do so. In other words, their default is more social distanced than the US or maybe Italy, etc.
I hope they prove everyone wrong, that SD'ing is a waste of time, and that just going on business as usual is the way forward. That would certainly be easier than herd immunity or rushing to invent a vaccine and get it through trials.
Damn shame, throwing away a perfectly good white boy like that
Mrs. Seano has been saying the same for weeks now......Found this interesting:

I agree. That is in the NY Times article said and every article I have read on them recently. Their top doc says they are trying to slow just like everyone else, just more laisez faire. But they also claim 26% of Stockholm County will be infected by May 1. Is there any other study, or any other city on earth that suggests more than 26% are infected? So if the Swedes are correct (not saying they are) Stockholm is the most infected major city of earth (more than NYC).
The meat packers are happy to open--now that the "president's" order gives them cover to open without protecting the workers--ie plastic screens between each employee like Ford (or is it GM )is doing to make PPE (or is it ventilators. Just saw it on the TV and already can't keep it straight.
In more news, the large company bailout plan is being rolled out by the Fed without the guarantee of keeping employees on the job and no increase in executive pay or bonuses that is in the law passed by Congress. https://www.washingtonpost.com/busin...-corporations/
If stuff like these two stories isn't enough to convince the white working class that Trump and the GOP don't give a shit about them then there is truly no hope for this country. (Actually I decided that a long time ago. This is a democracy, a country of laws in name only.) And now is the perfect time to ram this plutocracy down our throats--the House can't meet to hold hearings (not that anyone would show up to testify), the people aren't about to take to the streets--not the ones with brains.
